Minos Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 I was rather excited when I saw Max Payne 3 would take place in Sao Paulo, which is a very dark, tough and gritty city. Think of a fucked up New York. But those screenshots have nothing to do with Sao Paulo... slums here are flat and not as colorful as those in Rio... Sao Paulo also doesn't have any cliffs in the middle of the city as one of the screenshots show. It seems like they are basing their work on City of God (that takes place in Rio, which is a very sloppy city) and claiming it's Sao Paulo just for the sake of it. Sao Paulo slum: Rio slum: I'm rather hopeless now that I've seen those screenshots. Sure, I'll play it when it comes out because I'm a huge Max Payne fan but it seems like they really suck at researching Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Looking at the rio slums gives me vertigo. I agree though, when I heard the location I GIS'd it and got really excited, Sao Paolo looks like a really neat environment for a game, but then the screens are all generic south america. Plus with the non-english setting we might lose out on TV shows and guard banter, so the game may not have any funny either Quote
Thrik Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 While I'm always willing to give things the benefit of the doubt, looking at these screenshots I literally can't see anything that made the earlier Max Payne games appeal to me so much. While it may very well be a competent shooter, it doesn't look like it's going to bring back one of the most atmospheric series ever. I suppose it's worth remembering that Rockstar does have some serious storytelling chops though, so I'd imagine it will still be an engaging storyline with interesting characters. I'm just going to miss the deeply immersive night-time snow/rain setting. Quote

Hourences Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 I never played max payne, and even I can see from a long way off that this game has nothing to do with max payne Another sequel by people who dont get it. "What did the first game(s) have?" "guns" "good, so lets just make a game with guns then and it will be a sequel!!!111" Quote
Section_Ei8ht Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Another sequel by people who dont get it. QFT. I'm all for the benefit of the doubt, but this is not Max Payne. A recent issue of Game Informer has revealed that the story is set 12 years after the last one (setting it in 2015, The first game being in 2001, the second being 2003). Payne has been cut loose from the NYPD, and has moved to São Paulo, Brazil where he's taken up employment in the private security sector, working for a wealthy local family. Max on Fire? Quote
D3ads Posted June 15, 2009 Author Report Posted June 15, 2009 Why not? They're really going to scrap years of development at the behest of an internet petition. High-five man, let's do this shit! Oh ok, you were being sarcastic.. but yeah I just can't believe they want to reinvent Max Payne like this. Why the fuck do people keep trying to change franchises? Silent Hill Homecoming tried to change the franchise by making it more combat orientated and thus completely missed the point, Resident Evil went from zombies in a fictional US mansion to alien hybrids (or whatever they are) in Africa and now Max Payne is going to Brazil! Looking at the shots of Sao Paulo, it seems like it could work very well, just give Max his trademark jacket back, make him less hairy and set the game at night (cause you know.. MP never had any levels in the daytime) and it could be something special. I can't believe that they said in that article they went to large lengthes to research Sao Paulo when it's actually just a generic Rio setting which looks like borrowed content from the upcoming Modern Warfare 2! I might buy it, but I'll be waiting for the reviews and youtube videos of people actually playing the game before I decide to make a purchase or not. Quote
-HP- Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 this is one of the biggest fuck up's I have ever seen in my life... I can't express how disappointed I am. Quote

The two movies they cited as reference (city of god and elite squad) take place in Rio It's like comparing Los Angeles to New York... makes no fucking sense. Quote
JohnC Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 My tally thus far is: -It lacks both the writing of Sam Lake and voice acting of James Mcaffrey. -It's not in New York. -Rockstar is terrible at making PC Games. -I can't recall Rockstar ever releasing mod tools for their games. -The makers of Bully are developing it... I can't even think of a straight shooter ever made by Rockstar. Red Dead Revolver was started by Capcom (and full of annoyances) and Manhunt as I understand it is part stealth. Quote
FrieChamp Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 Max Payne is dead, long live Alan Wake! WAH WAH WAH! Quote
