If I were Gabe I would ask Sony for a ton of upfront money to develop a Portal or Team Fortress sequel (for example), as a PC/PlayStation exclusive

Not that they would never do it, but it seems unlikely that Valve would ever make another console game again. They were pretty open in the past about how much the console live system messes with how they like to develop games. (of note is how Valve was forced to charge for left 4 dead content updates that the pc got for free). Theyve also been open about how developing games for the ps3 and the strained relationship they had with Sony during that time basically solidified their opinion that consoles were not worth it.

At the same time maybe in this situation, Sony has learned to stop being a pain in the ass with devs after a lot of missed opportunities and Valve could see value in the PSVR system as a way to get VR games more mainstream attention. But its also doubtful that the same company thats working on BCI believing it to be the future, would go back to what they essentially consider out-moded hardware.

While all of that is true, we are a long way removed from the PS3 era, and although I have not owned a console (other than the Switch) in many, many years, it seems like there is a lot more respect and understanding of "games as a service" these days.

Granted, I haven't even heard of a reliable method to actually buy a PS5 right now, so my investment in Sony products is extremely low.

Never forget ensemble studio, microsoft turns to shit every game studios they own.

rip blizzard

Seems a bit of a stretch to pick one bad example and apply across the spectrum. Considering it was an acquisition done 20 years ago, of a studio developing a genre of games that was on a slump and I don’t think will ever really be a record breaker again.

We know how publishers often have unattainable expectations, I dunno if voices have been silenced, or the problem is actually less prominent… but I haven’t heard more cases of games doing reasonably well and the publishers going “they sold under expectations” (I remember Square Enix complaining of TR?)

Have there been other big cases? Minecraft has become as big as it can be, Ninja Theory seems to be doing well, Turn10 and Playground Studios seem to be doing well (even breaking out of the genre they’re know for). What about a game like Flight Simulator coming back and doing so well, like who was expecting that?

I dunno, I like the MS of recent years a lot in their overall strategy, products that they release etc. Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer they seem to be doing the right choices*.

I just find wrong that is possible to consolidate so much under one banner.

Let’s also think that it was only few years ago there was widespread fear/rumour MS would shut down Xbox altogether…

Let’s see this man’s face one last time (hopefully)
