meh, I guess i must be stupid to not care about this because I am so lucky to have stable internet.

Anyways, i remember the same outcry happening when it was announced that sc2 would require constant internet access as well, so blizzard added the "play as guest" feature so that you can play offline (and that requires you to have logged in once with your copy first). And they'll most likely do the same thing with d3. I wouldn't spend my twilight hours worrying over this:)

electricity gets turned off in germany if you don't pay for a couple of months, just try it when you're down there.

in the uk the only thing they don't turn off for a long time is water.

i don't get your massive amount of butthurt over the issue. it's retarded that a game would require you to be logged in all the time. even if you are playing single player.

I'm currently an intern so I get a company appartment. But since it is a company appartment, I cannot get broadband installed (+ I don't know how long I'll be staying here, so pushing for it doesn't make much sense) so I have to rely on the same type of shitty 3g key that Rick has mentioned. That shit is capped to 5GB download+upload a month. Without the option on steam to download my games elsewhere, activate them from my computer, then just play in offline mode, I'd be fucked, as that key is depending on the phone network, so for some reason on cloudy days it just won't find a proper signal, or randomly keep disconnecting every 5 minutes for no reason.

I agree that when you do have a stable broadband connection, you don't have to worry about that kind of stuff, but those bad situations are not as rare as you may think they are (and people from this industry should know better as they usually move a lot) so having no option to do without constant stable internet access is quite bad imo.

Also, sure for an MMO I wouldn't buy it if I knew my connection couldn't handle it, but I play a lot of RPGs and even if they do have coop/online, I always do a full SP campaign before I even consider going online. Just saying that I will buy some games for SP only that other people buy only to play online, you can't figure "oh well it's diablo, people will buy it to play online anyway"

But Diablo is designed with online play in mind. The multiplayer-focused economy is ingrained through all of the gameplay mechanics, worlds with multiple players unlock extra challenge and rewards, with friends is the best way to play the game, etc.

Honestly I often played Diablo 2 single player because I’m anti-social and I won’t group with people I don’t know (unless we’re silently going to stab some loot piñatas together and steal stuff before it hits the ground). This is the reason WoW is so successful, right? They realised the worst thing about MMO’s is other people. Everyone hates other people. So they let you play solo. They also realised in WotLK people also don’t like leaving town, talking to people, finding groups, or applying any effort whatsoever.

Anyway, certainly doing the single player campaign before grouping with other people is an option, but doing this in the offline version of the game is a mistake because your options are:

  • [*:3hzh9nc9]Play the game single player and offline. Decide you want to play the game how it was always intended and create a whole new character from scratch.
[*:3hzh9nc9]Play the game single player and online. Decide you want to play the game how it was always intended and use your existing character and/or gear.

Or go on Hacker-Central or whatever the non-battle.net multiplayer mode is called.

Diablo requiring an internet connection has probably created my quickest shrug of the shoulders to an internet mass overreaction. It sounds like “online game requires online.”

never played diablo 2 online, it was hack central (just realised u posted some real place called that, im referring to the blatant use of hacks no matter what game you joined) and shit.

My highest moment on D2 was when my level 66 hardcore tankazon (sword and shield amazon) finally died at a nightmare Baal run. I had gone as far as Hell act 2 with her before.

And my level 81 skelemancer died at a random nightmare desert tomb when I was playing drunk and couldn't chug down purple potion fast enough after being poisoned... damn he had killed Diablo on Hell and was on a safe path to get hell Baal...

I miss those characters. And the only way we could play Hardcore on battlenet was to have extremely secluded and locked down password protected games.

Good times.

Hack central is just something I plucked from the air to describe to open battle.net.

Closed battle.net, which doesn't allow offline characters, wasn't perfect but it wasn't too bad. A few duped buggy items around (<3 dual AO_newith) and everyone had a map hack.

only ever got to like lvl 20 online, no matter what game you joined there were hackers and that pretty much ruined the experience.
