BaRRaKID Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 ":1y5mz6ig]Also.... Carmack just said what everyone already knows, Carmack just said what everyone has been thinking for the last couple years but never ever had the guts to admit, Carmack has the balls of steel to say what's going on with pretty much ALL the major AAA studios out there (including his) and he gets bashed for that... but of course he does, that's how society works isn't that right? I'm surprised it even comes as a surprise to anyone what he just said, everyone's concentrating on consoles now, the only developer I can think of that still makes AAA for PC is Blizzard, and even so Blizzards is it's own league. On the other hand one can argue how meaningful Carmack and id are on todays game industry. The last game id developed was Doom 3 (in 2004) and before that it was Quake 3 arena (in 1999), Rage is their first new ip since 1996 (when they released the first Quake). Even if we look at how meaningful their game engines are idTech 4 was only used in 8 games (Doom3, Doom3: RoE, Quake 4, Prey, ET:QW, Wolfenstein, Brink and Prey 2, so it was basically an in house engine) as opposed to the 20+ games in which idTech 3 was used, and the amount of games and engines that spawned from the Q1 and Q2 engines. To me this looks like a company (and by extent a man) that it's living in it's own shadow and that has hardly any relevance today. This means that, first, I doubt that what Carmack said will have any impact in the industry, and second, it all just sounds like an excuse for a company that is out of touch, doesn't know what their clients want, and that released an average game hoping it would be the next big thing. It we look at companies like Valve, Crytek, Blizzard, EA, Konami, Eidos, BioWare, Codemasters, and many others, it's true that they are all releasing their games on consoles, but they are also releasing some of the best PC Games of the last decade, and they are all polished, mostly bug free, and proper pc games. I'm a PC gamer, I don't own any of this gen consoles, and I played many great games and had great experiences in this last few years, the only differences are that now I'm more selective, I only buy games that I know are good, and I buy almost all of my games trough steam, all the rest feels the same as it felt 10 years ago. Erratic Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 Meaningful how, sales? Engine licensing? Who gives a shit. RAGE is probably the best shooter single player so far this year, how is that not fucking relevance? Also lol they still made one of the best looking games since Doom 3. Quote
Furyo Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 wow, did anyone see the monstrosity over at Metacritic for this? I really dislike Metacritic, but damn, so much hate out there for this game 172 negatives http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/rage Assassin's Creed 2 on PC got a 2.3 user review note when Ubi announced the "always online" DRM for it, whereas the reviews gave it a 9.1. Whiners will whine, fanboys will be fanboys and self entitled brats will be self entitled brats. "we put you in this position, respect us" and all that. Quote
dux Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 An always online DRM is going to have a negative effect though, kind of obvious what the reactions were to be, no? Quote
Furyo Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 That the reactions would be negative yeah, of course, but to use the user review score of a GAME to grade its DRM is childish at best. Besides, to even think that Ubisoft would give a fuck was laughable. Quote
Gloglebag Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 I don't like the gunplay, it just doesn't feel as good as in Valve games and CoD. But he game is so fucking good looking. I mean jesus fuck. Quote

I don't have any current consoles, just PC and mobile stuff (Dungeon Raid on ios is one of the best puzzle games I've ever played, and definitely the best puzzle RPG. Owns the shit out of puzzle quest), and yet somehow I don't have any problems finding Good Games. I don't even like RTS's, either. "AAA" is almost exclusively a console, american-focused term, it's not something you'd ever hear someone use to describe, say, Stalker COP, and yet that's the best game I've played in the last three years or so. No polish or technical problems at all, either. *I have a Wii but it's been like two years at least since there was a good Wii game Quote

Meaningful as in does anyone still give a shit about them (not taking in consideration what they've done in the past)? And saying that RAGE is the best single player shooter (did you mean first person, or any kind of shooter?) of the year so far is a stretch... Crysis 2 and Deus Ex 3 come to mind. Hell according to Metacritic Critic Reviews (not user reviews), Rage is as good as Dead Island, which apparently (haven't played it tbh) is not that good. Have a look for your self. And about Doom 3, many adjectives come to mind, but best looking isn't on of them, quite the opposite actually, to this day I regret buying it along with Q4, although I grew up playing quake and doom and am a big fan of both series. Wut! You just lost all credibility I had in you with that line only, right here. Quote

Taylor Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 There were (exclusively) negative comments on metacritic before the game even came out. Quote
dux Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 I'm about 7h into the game now, booted it up just now and it is stuttering like crazy for no reason. I verified the integrity of the game cache and steam re download 1 file. I now have to do this every time I want to play the game or I will get 1fps, literally. It is even hanging on the loading screen as well. The hell? Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 There were (exclusively) negative comments on metacritic before the game even came out. This is one of the dumbest things about Metacritic IMO, they let average users submit ratings before the game's even released. What possible legit use could that serve?? Quote
