blackdog Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 I’m very happy the Ravenholm game was cancelled. I know it was way in alpha but it just doesn’t feel HL, looks like what a mod team across the fanbase would come up with: goofy ideas and borderline messing up with the continuity/canon. The electricity gun for as fun as it can seem, just seems out of place in terms of tech available for the guy: the priest builds very mechanical traps and all of a sudden turns into Tesla? I disagree, it could've have been fun but I find that hilarious that the zombie shirt are titled "placeholder" it make sense why they don't have headcrabs yet. I like the idea they made new weapons it's unique and the nail gun looked cool I love how they actually used the SPAS-12 view model haha xD. Quote
Radu Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 It was a lot more interesting in my mind based on the limited media we saw over the years. Watching the drawn out gameplay now is a bit disappointing. There are cool ideas for sure, but pretty dry overall. The section with the monkeys was the most engaging one. Otherwise, it's missing that moment to moment variety found in half-life games. Dabu 1 Quote

Oh yeah forgot about that, I can only think of that episode of The Simpsons… 8 hours ago, Poofoge said: I disagree Sure, you like anything Quote
fewseb Posted May 9, 2022 Report Posted May 9, 2022 Arkane could of salvaged that prototype and made their own original game with it. Its so disconnected from half life it could of just been its own IP. That being said I think for the time frame they made it in and how "new" source was at the time they did a really good job with the atmosphere and the lighting. The biggest issue with the gameplay presented is there are next to no breaks. You go from one zombie encounter to another in quick succession and often times have to solve puzzles while they are attacking you. The combat looked like it could be fun if they ever got passed just having zombies run at you. Overall a bit of a shame it never went anywhere, but at the same time Arkane also had bigger and better ideas that worked out for them. blackdog 1 Quote

Valve themselves only stretched the concept for one chapter. Having stuff like those fast running zombies seems quite off-brand, and I don’t think they intended to replace them with the HL2 fast zombies… or they would have just used those? I dunno, Ravenholm was a horror set piece, this was becoming L4D. Quote
