Thrik Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 Yeah I agree, I've become a massive couch gamer and have basically no desire to make my home office computer gamer grade. Benefits: Can enjoy time with girlfriend (or drive her out the room with loud shooting if I want privacy ) Amazing sound set-up Big-ass screen Wonderfully soft sofa Unfortunately there is a downside: Keyboard/mouse is too much of a pain in the ass I'm hoping the Steam Controller will go some way towards finally killing that last downside, or at least minimising it to the point where it doesn't matter. If it does, I can honestly say I will never miss sitting alone in a chair at a desk while gaming. -HP- 1 Quote

-HP- Posted November 5, 2013 Author Report Posted November 5, 2013 the reason why we need higher framerates is two-parted: a) we want maximum re-action time and instant recognition of anything moving on screen. If you play Quake 3 Arena, sure, max the framerate out. But if you play some dude-bro-singleplayer-military-shooter where the AI never hits you in the first place, I'd rather go for resolution than framerate. so - if someone asks if I want, say Uncharted in 4k at 24fps or 720p at 60fps (hypothetically, i know technically its not as easy), I'd rather have the higher resolution, as long as the framerate is stable. Yeap, exactly, I agree. But I wouldn't touch the MP of that Uncharted because it would be unplayable. Unless they make the MP 60+FPS. SP, sure I can work with 30FPS. (Not 24fps man, i don't know where you're getting that 24FPS thing from) But for MP anything bellow 40FPS is borderline UNPLAYABLE for me. It's the reason why GTAV MP sucks, It's the reason why Last of Us MP sucks and the flip sided coin of that it's the reason why CoD MP rules and TF2 rules and L4D rules. because they run at 60+FPS, it's a nice smooth frame rate to frag. Anything bellow is just a shitty experience that I refuse to go through. And players might not know about this tech facts as we do, but they FEEL it, and that's why CoD and other games that focus on 60FPS sell shitloads of copies, cos they feel right. Also, why does it have to be black or white? Why can't we settle on 720p 60FPS for MP? And 1080p 30FPS for SP? Wouldnt everybody be happy this way? dkm, PogoP and knj 3 Quote
ZZZ Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 The frame rate determines "screen smoothness", but there are other, "hidden", numbers. In multiplayer there is rate at which things are updated over network. If there are physics simulation, the rate at which physics is run. If there is AI, there is another rate related to how fast AI reacts or how often AI checks for changes in the game world. The other rate that I can think of now is the frame rate for body animations. I mean, there are many cases that games run at the same frame rate yet they don't feel exactly the same (I'm excluding motion blur here). Quote
