The Latest Nexus Range has Landed!!!

I don't know what people's phone preferences are around here, but I am as excited as a kid on Christmas waiting for my chance to pre-order this behemoth of a phone!

http://www.google.com/nexus/6/

The same link shows new Nexus 9 and the Nexus 5 with android L, although stocks of that are fairly limited.

BONUS: stumbled across it on a loophole with my mobile somehow, but not shown to the UK at least, there is also Nexus Player!

Thoughts anyone? :)

when do we get small phones again?  Also wtf 2560p display who the hell needs that?  why not use less battery/graphics resources?  It's not like any app is going to use that resolution for anything but high dpi text/images, and any game will run like hot garbage.

I have large hands, and I think that 5 inch phones are a bit too big, also I don't need cargo pants to carry a normal sized phone.

Also wtf why Nexus Player?  Didn't the Nexus Q tank enough already?  Also I'm pretty sure every other android "console" tanked.

...there must be a lot of big-handed mother lovers out there.

There are dozens of us! But seriously, I could smother a human with one hand...

They follow market trends, and people keep buying bigger phones so bigger they get!

They still make smaller phones, they just aren't the flagship models. I think technically the display would be 1440p as it's a 16:9 ratio and would be expected to be used in landscape for full potential.

I've actually made a paper prototype of it to see how it is to hold, and they've done a good job, it isn't that much wider than a nexus 5. Think half a cm wider and 1cm taller than HTC One M7.

The nexus Q was a different device which didn't tank, they pulled it before it rolled out, so i believe the only models around are pre-orders and developer previews. This is a set top box to fight right at the Apple TV and Amazong Fire TV level, although I can't say much for the quad core 1.8GHz atom sitting inside it. I personally prefer the chromecast for low cost and ease of use, but I'll reserve judgement on this until I see it in action as I didn't think Apple TV or Fire TV had much on the chromecast either.

Do they still update the Nexus 5?  Maybe it's just that there's no big announcement that seems to me like they're just dropping it.

Oh, the Nexus Q was dropped right before release, due to feedback of having too little, according to wikipedia.  Chromecast actually gained traction alongside Apple TV, which I don't think the Fire TV really did.  Did the Fire TV get anywhere?  It was leaning so much on "gaming" features when anyone who cares about games is just going to get a PS4 or Xbox One and use that for media+games.  Chromecast just makes sense, in the end, you only need the power for video and stuff.  I really doubt the Player is going to go anywhere.

Seriously though, for me any phone above five inches is an immediate no-go and even that's the upper limit of what I find comfortable as a one-hand phone user. It's something that's really been pissing me off about Android phones for some time, as the smaller models are always unappealing for some reason or other. Updating the Nexus 5 (which has some key weaknesses like its camera according to people I know with one) and going the Apple route of just two size models seems like it'd be a very wise move but I see no evidence of that.

Design-wise it's horrible. Size is also a no go, I still think that 4.5" >> all and vendors should offer same top hardware configs in two sizes; I'm pretty sure that if they did this whole "the bigger the better" bubble would blow up in notime.

This is gonna be about big as the iPhone 6+ according to mr geek here, but being thicker, how's gonna handle?

Being more ergonomic I think it should at least offer better grip, but IMO still irrelevant.

@jackophant: landscape orientation is not at all the best way to use a phone with that aspect ratio: you can see in iPhone 6+ reviews that despite the giant screen you can barely read x3 1-line texts rofl

It's actually significantly bigger than the iPhone 6, which is only 5.5 inches. This thing is 6 inches.

Screen size of course. I can't physically get my thumb across the iPhone 6's screen.

My fiance's dad was looking into it, and from what I understand from him it sold out on release. I haven't seen much about it so I presume it might not have been too incredible.

I disagree about the gaming just going for PS4 or Xbox One, those consoles cost a lot, and for me who does most of his gaming in front of a computer a £99 android console is very appealing. I myself have an OUYA! :D The way I see it is that most of what is on consoles (apart from "exclusives") are just cut down versions of what we have access to on PC anyway, and android console offers a different range of games. The ouya has spawned some fantastic little games that also don't cost £50 each, Towerfall and Bomb Squad are immensely fun.

Also the chromecast still has it's place along side this Nexus Player (rubbish name imo). While I'm sure it will serve the same purpose plus more, if you have multiple TVs you want to use across the house chromecast is much cheaper to cover them all.

The nexus 5 is the second most recent release which if not reason enough to be updated (they're even giving nexus 4 5.0) it's also listed in the new press release for the 6 and 9. Each new iteration of android still manages to reach back to the Nexus 4 which is good, sadly I don't think a lot of manufacturers will put the same effort in to increase the longevity of their older devices, that'll be left to 3rd party support with custom ROMs.

Never have I wanted to make so many penis related jokes, especially when people are so shocked "6 inches won't fit in their hand"

Point is, with the Nexus 5, that they never upgraded the phones, they always replaced them. I don't think it would be too early to upgrade it (most other vendors release new models every 6 months), or maybe they could have cut the price a little bit.

After release Ouya disappeared from the news, thought there was nothing going on there.

The Fire TV I don't see it at all as a console, how can one say that… if it was they would have called something else: it's just a way to better consume Prime content, if you are in it. And btw every review says it's way better than the Apple TV, with a voice control really working.

Gaming it's just the cherry on the top.
