Sentura Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 for those of you interested in programming, it's just been taken a step further: Synthetic biology aims at producing novel biological systems to carry out some desired and well-defined functions. An ultimate dream is to design these systems at a high level of abstraction using engineering-based tools and programming languages, press a button, and have the design translated to DNA sequences that can be synthesised and put to work in living cells. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/gec/ i'm really interested in what they'll do with this and how they will progress. with any luck we might just save ourselves from ourselves with technological life or implants into the human body (and if this is the technological singularity we're headed against, then oh shit). Minos Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 hehe nice, can't wait to see the internet filled with tutorials on how to create biological weapons and stuff You could even code your own personal zombie virus if this becomes a reality Quote

PogoP Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 Before we know it, we'll build cities using UDK, and we will design our children using Max and Zbrush. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 Hackers of the future will write viruses for humans. Kinda scary to think about it. Quote

Sentura Posted June 7, 2010 Author Report Posted June 7, 2010 i like that you all think that we're gonna die by our own hand, or the hands of terrorists factions. personally i think it's much more likely that we accidentally create an AI that wipes us all out. Quote
Sindwiller Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 Genetic engineering and especially the industrial exploitation of it is bullocks. Refer to James Bruges' literature otherwise. But I'm probably the only one who's seeing ethical and biological problems with it. Quote

A nano AI that makes the synthetic viruses as smart as humans. Quote
