So F.E.A.R. 2 has gone gold and will be on shelves by the 10th (US) and the 12th (Europe and beyond), Gametrailers has an exclusive launch trailer in celebration which is pants wettingly awesome. I cannot wait for the game to come out, I've not been this excited about a game since Quake 4 back in 05.

F.E.A.R. 2 will apparently need Steam in order to activate the game, looks like I finally have my excuse to reinstall Steam again...

Tried the demo, was alright. I really like the gun fight portions of the game, but the "ooooooo spooky little girl, be frightened now!" segments were just completely turning me off. Its just not creepy at all, and really just made me wish the entire game was gunfights instead.

But if it were just gun fights, its just another shooter, yawn!

Whilst the horror bits don't scare me, they do put me on edge a bit, especially when you're in the maintenance tunnel and Alma appears behind you, made me jump out of my skin. The best thing about F.E.A.R. was the combat anyway so I'll be expecting more of the same with better AI this time around. I'm really just excited to see how the storyline develops from here, although it wasn't the most original idea ever, the fact that it's set just before the explosion creates a new perspective on the events.

It's supposed to be just before to after, kinda like RE3 to RE2 :P

It's hard to combine good combat and fear in a game because they kind of go against each other. You can create a lot of scary (read: jumpy) set pieces and create a tension as the player walks around worried they might trip the next set piece, but if you feel confident about taking out enemies and are fully stocked with weaponry (and can hit F6 at any point to save) it’s very hard to feel worried about your survival.

The fact your main character handles like a wheelbarrow, ammo is nonexistent and death takes you back several minutes of gameplay in Resident Evil (0-3) and Silent Hill (1-3, console) is part of the reason they work so well. You don’t want to fight anything because your character sucks at combat. Unfortunately having a crap control system "on purpose" is extremely bad form these days, which is why Resident Evil has completely changed and Silent Hill has lost its way.

I got the game on EU release day, it's superb so far, they really listened to the criticism regarding the first one, there's so much more detail in the levels it's insane, even on medium settings it looks fantastic, love the city backdrop. I had to knock down the res to 800x600 this time as it's got more detailed environments than the demo but I'm not fussed about that, that's what you get for having an old machine :\ Shadows are horrible though, they should just be removed for being so pointless.

Oh yeah, and high-five to the people that supplied the instructions on how to run it without Steam, means I can play it straight away without having to piss about with another Internet connection :P

I watched the ending on Youtube after Zero Punctuation insulted it.

That was one of the most fucked up things I've seen in a videogame. What other game can claim to have

The protagonist raped in first person by an evil physic ghost she-demon thing, knocking her up, and being forced into fatherhood as the ultimate of evils before the credits roll?

Also yes, quick cut at the end with no resolution to the plot outside the main character's fate, which whily shitty, isn't nearly as shitty as some of the other "To Be Continued" endings I've seen in gaming in recent years. It compares favorably to, say, Halo 2.
