Ginger Lord Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 Whats the best way to go about this? I think in the near future I'd best start to learn the UE engine, but: [*:3qtgliyz]Whats the best game to get to get all the editors/tools/textures and what not? [*:3qtgliyz]Wheres the best place to get some good tutorials? [*:3qtgliyz]Are there any guides for people who have done Source work and want to transfer skills across?
searinox Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 I reccomend you to acquire Unreal Tournament 3 Collector´s Edition. It comes with the last build of Uengine 3 and Ued, 20 hours of videotutorials (winnar!), and its a great game . You can also check this: http://www.icecreamyou.com/ut3.html . Its a really nice compilation of uengine 3 tutorials (hourences tutorials appears there, and some more).
Zacker Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 I am very much in the same situation as you ginger_lord. It's been a while since I last learned a new engine, so it is time again and UE3 seems like obvious choice in these times. So I am on the lookout for the exact same things as you:)
Pericolos0 Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 learn making geometry in a 3d package, and then you can make the stuff of your dreams in ue3. Otherwise its just boring and working with brushes in unrealedit is pretty useless unless you want to make square corridors.
BioPulse Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 There's also a couple of books out which refer very much to UnrealEd / are specific to this tool. But wow, 20 hours of video tutorials.... maybe I need to save up some cash to get that special edition afterall Pericolos0: What kind of package would you recommend thats affordable (or free if there's any good ones) and not to hard to learn? And can you use in-game taxtures on this geometry, or would you need to create your own textures?

Silo and modo are pretty cheap and great modelling packages, but i dont know about the exporting options. Wings3d is free and a GREAT modeller, but i dont know how easy it is to export from this one either. I'd recommend trying to find yourself a copy of max or maya though.. somehow..
Ginger Lord Posted January 15, 2008 Author Report Posted January 15, 2008 Seeing as we use XSI for our Uni course I'd be best of using that, hopefully theres an exporter for it.
Sentura Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 i've had a huge problem with a transition as well. so far the only more or less succesful transition completely without tutorials for me has been 3d studio max. i really want to learn ut3, but as with max or any other modelling programs, the camera is annoying as hell. how is it that hammer has the best camera available yet everyone else has their own way of doing things? is there any way to change to the camera in any program to match the one used in hammer?
Zacker Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Here are some more links which have gone into my bookmarks regarding UE: http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/ http://www.hourences.com/book/tutorialsindex.htm http://www.avld.org/pages/tuts/tuts.htm http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/ActorX.html http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/UT3ModHome.html I also just started reading the book "Mastering Unreal Technology: The Art of Level Design" which seems like a very comprehensive book on everything in regards to working with the Unreal engine. Starts out with some very basic stuff, but with 900 pages in all that is ok.
-HP- Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 the camera is annoying as hell. how is it that hammer has the best camera available yet everyone else has their own way of doing things? is there any way to change to the camera in any program to match the one used in hammer? Actually, I found Hammer viewport camera pretty annoying! Although It's not nearly annoying as Radiant! It's very hard when you're modeling your assets on your favorite 3rd party geometry modeling, then you come back to the editor and the camera controlers are completely different, you found you'r self using hotkeys from the wrong program, etc! Curiously, almost none of the programs out there, both game editors and modeling apps, don't let you customize the way you control the camera! In fact, the only one I know of, is XSI (The one I'm using right now), it even let you choose a 3DsMax like controls, Maya or the old softimage program default keys, pretty amazing! I really like the SandBox2 viewport navigation controls, because It's pretty much like a game, you use the WASD or the arrows to move the camera, UnrealEd controls are not bad either, but they'r far from being perfect. Oh well, I guess it all comes down to getting used to, and once you get used to a specific control set, It's always hard to migrate!
Ginger Lord Posted January 31, 2008 Author Report Posted January 31, 2008 Aye, using anything but XSI controls frustrates me. Its annoying when I hold S and wiggle the mouse and nothing happens in Photoshop!
