[Question] Scripting - Level Design Portfolio
jackophant replied to Greg D'Alessandro's topic in Off-Topic
I would guess screenshots (maybe even webm/gif animations) of the final product as well as a detailed explanation of the project indicating what you were responsible for. -
1 year and using dev textures? HA! EDIT: Happy 3rd Birthday Stupa
-
No worries! Also, just out of interest, did you make mid any shorter or is it the same length as before?
-
Fair enough, yeah get it checked to be sure. However, I doubt upgrading to Pro would solve anything. Window's automatic maintenance won't run defrag on your SSD for Windows 8+, and I'm seeing mixed results for Windows 7.
-
Is it just me or does anyone else absolutely love the Phoenix Compound coop mission? I love this type of thing! Reminds me of trying to complete mercenaries in Resident Evil
-
Googling unexpected_store_exception seems to suggest reinstalling windows will fix it.It will easily last more than 2 years. They can last up to 10 years depending on usage.€500 is good for a PC build excluding monitor.

Is "no boot device found" the boot error you get? I find it strange that it then suddenly recognises it. Sudden loss of power can be pretty bad for Windows. What is the BSOD error code you get? That is the best place to start any BSOD investigation.Yeah that's fine, don't worry about upgrading that then, but you do need to check to make sure it's sitting properly in the slots. You may have to screw the bottom panel off, RAM is usually easy to reach. If you're uncomfortable doing it, maybe try finding a YouTube tutorial for someone changing RAM in your specific device, but anything will do. It's pretty straight forward, just don't get it wet, drop it, or rub your fingers all over it and make sure you're grounded before touching it.When SSDs first came out they had shorter life spans than their spinning relatives. But their MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) has increased as well as the number of read/write cycles it can make before dying, meaning only a server operator might have to worry if at all.Ah, I misunderstood. So you want a new desktop PC for about €500. I'll happily throw something together for you when you know you've got the money

Thought this was a Pink Panther quote at first glance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6oeAdemFZw (why isn't this embedding? ) @Wrakk Mid's looking great, but I still think you need to shorten it and then you might not feel like the trees would be necessary (at least centrally). Obscuring a player's vision like that, even with these narrow trees can throw people off, especially as they don't serve a functional purpose. Similarly to the lampost at the bottom of mid on inferno, you'd want people cursing their own lack of aim rather than a model/prop that is stopping them from making a kill.

[csgo] Lighting on props broken since Wildfire Update? (+ Possible fix)
jackophant replied to a topic in Level Design
I'm kind of having same problem as @MaanMan, but my shadows cast on the floor are solid black. If they carry on over to a wall, that shadow is fine. I also have odd light reflections on walls and anywhere a light source is, the weird, black, inky shadow disappears. This has been replicated on @Vaya's machine as well, using his originally non-problematic compile settings: http://imgur.com/a/dahc0 -
You say almost never crashes when left stationary... Hardrives are pretty robust so unless it's a faulty unit, a drop hard enough to break a hard drive would probably do a lot more obvious damage to other components. RAM can come unseated pretty easily, especially in laptops, so if that's wobbling around in a slot it could definitely cause crashing issues. Speaking of which, has the laptop been dropped? Provided the laptop can be fixed, purchasing an SSD would be a good way to make it feel more modern and fast, and squeeze a few more years out of it. Maybe change your RAM to allow for more if it's an area your PC lacks. I would guess it's 4GB now? Upgrading to 8GB could be worthwhile and is relatively inexpensive. So what does that leave you upgrading? You have a desktop computer, but no monitor? So would you be spending 500€ on a screen?
-
Hiya, how do you mean it fails to do common things? When you say you get a black screen, does the monitor register that it's connected or does it time-out and go into standby? i'm not sure what you want to upgrade, but £200 isn't much. Your CPU is only a couple of years old and seems more than adequate for today's titles. Your graphics card can only be a few months old, but isn't particularly powerful, but again, more than adequate for most things as long as the graphics are low enough. How old is the rest of your system? I would guess it's a similar age to the CPU which puts it at around 3 years old. Not much should go wrong in 3 years, but often the first part to go is the power supply (PSU) which could explain your difficulty to turn the computer on. It can also flake out and cause a crash if your CPU ramps up and draws too much power than it is able to handle. With £200 and the current state and age of your machine I would look at replacing your PSU and maybe purchasing an SSD hard drive which breaths life into the oldest most decrepit computers (a lot of what "slows computers down" is cruddy old slow spinning hard drives). If you could get back to me with some more specifically described behaviours we can progress from there

[csgo] Lighting on props broken since Wildfire Update? (+ Possible fix)
jackophant replied to a topic in Level Design
did a compile last night. My props were OK, but all my shadows were a weird harsh inky black. -
Oooooh, do we get a list? I was thinking you could have a bombtrigger as well: after the bomb explosion you could have the typical klaxon sound they use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAqnrpDwaCM When can we play this?
-
That looks really good! Not something I'd typically pursue, but I want to see this. Fantastic cast as well.
-
By the look of it you are just use "light" entities. Try mixing them with "light_spot" entities which project light in a direction and not in an area around them.

Pretty late to dig this up but seeing as this the thread has already been revived maybe someone down the line will benefit: An element of some maps is to have "random spawns" like Dust2 which give different weighted timings to each site for variety. You can assign multiple spawns the same value so they are equally weighted. Set a basic group of spawns at value 1 for up to 10v10 and any spawns beyond that as 2 so some spawns are only activated when there are a large number of people on the server and still don't get cluttered.
-
that's where Source 2 should help. Right now source doesn't utilise multiple cores properly, if at all (I'm not sure what the support is). However, Source 2 will utilise all cores you throw at it so the days of Intel's superior "per core performance" gaming CPUs would be numbered and a lot of the cheaper multi-core AMD CPUs will handle games much better.
-
It's specifically the shader setting. Don't go above medium and you should be fine.
-
We're already talking about this in the CSGO topic But regarding your question, it literally just means that the grass is now easier for your computer to render, so you can now have more of them without hindering your performance. @Sprony could we please merge this into the CSGO topic?

It wasn't that hard for Ts to access yard with a couple of smokes, and that wont change. A lot of people opted for boosting on to container anyway. The only issue I see is the ease of being able to get to heaven as a T, but heaven has always been a very powerful position so I think it should help, as by the look of it, Ts can boost up outside mini to gain access to that if they didn't use the container and don't want to expose themselves by running towards hell to get up to heaven. #STRATSYO Anyway, congratulations to all the mapcorians in the operation!

May I ask what you aren't ready for? Or is it more your financial situation than mindset? From what's been discussed it sounds like you've been stuck in a pretty sucky job.

I was really underwhelmed by crimson peak. I felt the setting of the building had so much to give, of this giant mansion we saw 3-4 rooms? But typically Hollywood: looooooong build up, action over in 5 minutes then film over.

There I was thinking Metallica made that song, although it makes a lot of sense now... Have to say I prefer their version, pls no hate. I've been listening to Electro Swing group Caravan Palace's latest album "Robot Face", <3 it Lone Digger, first track on the album to set the mood:
