wylde_maps Posted August 4, 2024 Author Report Posted August 4, 2024 (edited) Just wanted to share some of my thoughts: Castle Neuschwanstein is one of, if not the, most famous castle in the world. Built between 1868 and 1884 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the castle is inspired by the type of fortresses described in the types of medieval tales a young Ludwig's father would tell him. In fact, Ludwig II wrote to his friend, Richard Wagner, that he intended to complete the building "in the authentic style of the old German knights' castles". Of course, little about Neuschwanstein is historically accurate. Initial concept art for the project was drawn up by a stage designer, Christian Jank, and his theatrical flair is found throughout the plans for the castle. Made primarily to look the part, the castle is made mostly of concrete and steel beams, though you would never notice without looking up close. Serving as inspiration to Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle, Neuschwanstein sits alone as the world's most fantastic castle. [Photos of construction, ca. 1882-1886] [Photo of finished castle, ca. 1900] My intention with de_swanstone is to capture the beauty of the outside, while creating a balanced, fun, and highly competitive map. Combat centers around the main courtyard, the outside road leading to secondary entrances to the castle, and the catacombs meandering beneath the main structure. Thank you for your time!
