Making a normal map for a rock texture like that is almost as much work as making the texture itself, I think for the best result you should probably try to model it

Actually it should take a lot, lot more work in most cases

Also rocks are some of the hardest things to get right when creating the normal IMO. Of course depending on type, but when you want a coarse and deep rock it's certainly not the easiest thing.

I don't think its way to sharp, I think it may be the way the rock is. Anyway im sure it looks good on terrain.

well the little holes are too deep and too many of them, it will ruin the nice quality of the texture - I think you shoulod have a look at some of valve's normal maps for rocks - they are very even and not quite so 'noisy'

I love the texture though, much better than anything I could do right now.

The diffuse was made in like 30 minutes max or so. Ofcourse the norma will take more time.

Should definately be modeled yeah, i don't have much experience of normal mapping but you could really get a lot more out of the texture with modelled normal map.

Feel free to model a rock model, cause that is close to impossible to get a good result, but with zbrush and such, it would be waay better.

Uhm, basically i ment to get the biggest rock parts to come out a lot more. I'd model it in any case, if i've understood this right, even a bad normal map from a render is better than some normal map plugin for PS. But yeah, of course all that stuff would be so much easier in zbrush.
