whoops. Sorry what is the "Status 2" requirement for map submissions? Didnt see any messages of any issues with map.

what's with all the night maps? :???: Anyway, modeling out some assets to give the sites a bit more characteristics.
Suggestions on the overall aesthetics would be appreciated. I know some of the assets could use some work but I'm planning on refining them once I get the map to that "90% finished" phase.

not sure if this thread is for asking questions but any Zbrush users know how to approach high-to-low-poly when there's a bunch of holes that you have to convert into an opacity map? (colors are the desired low poly)

I would suggest looking at more old Chinese and Japanese art. You don't have to worry about plagiarism as much since the artists have been dead for hundreds of years. Also your current painting uses too many lines and too bright of colors to look like old styled art, but I like how it's going. Make sure you Chinese letters follow the correct stroke order too, right now "女" is too stretched.
I definitely agree about the inconsistent style. IIRC, glass wasn't even discovered in Eastern Asia until a few hundred years after Europeans did (it's why walls and windows are paper/wood).
The real reason is that I just wanted to use the "refract" shader for a fun little stained glass mural effect. The bullshit reason is I've invented some story of a European artist sending the mural of some Korean king's daughter as a gift-- which I can conveniently justify with a small placard with some words on it.

I decided to not have my reference out when I drew from scratch and used other images as well. Still a bit of similarities but I've emailed the reference's artist to make sure she was okay with it. Seems to stand on its own legs but then again, I dont know squat. :???:

Use many references to try and create your own piece, what you're doing here isn't really making too much of your own. An example is when I painted a realistic Fallout 3 Wallpaper, even though it was hard work and hours from my part the work still wasn't 100% mine, because I only used one reference and drew exactly as it was in the reference, now this isn't how references work and what I did is basically try to copy / draw the same for practice but this is what you're doing here aswell.
A reference is nothing more than that, a reference or a source of inspiration, but when it's almost a copy of it, it's for you to decide if you feel like the work is yours
Combine many references instead to create your own unique piece, it will feel better aswell.
Thanks for the explanation and suggestion. I decided to scrap it and make it out of scratch.
Pretty new to art in general so I felt a bit weird when i drew that. Curious what the rule is for maps' landmarks and locales. Lots of community maps have identically referenced buildings and layouts (but I'm assuming the situation is different since they're creating a whole entire environment and translating through different mediums).

I'm still a newbie to game art; I'm making an asset of a stained glass mural painting of a lady:

I wanted to use the pose for the lady but similarities are clearly there between my drawing and the reference.
Is it different enough or should I burn with fire? I'm assuming there's a lot of similar issues in the art industry but it seems like people aren't quite sure from what i've read online.

(Oct-31-2015 v.b7) ALMOST FINISHED!

I'd really appreciate any feedback on how to improve the aesthetics of the map. I have a lot more screenshots in the workshop link below. Gotta polish map up before Nov 9 deadline!

Still looks so dark. (I remember the playtest for this one- turned into a shitshow of people trying to out do each other for
dankdark memes)What time of day are you going with the skybox? I don't the light_environment is matching it just now.
I think it might be that I have high brightness on my monitor/game setting. I had no idea it was dark at all. To be hohnest, it still looks fine to me from my computer but I cranked up the ambient brightness in the latest build and added some more lights.
The skybox is just a template for now. I'm planning on making my own skybox once I can get the color scheme and mood of the level down.
I'm still experimenting on the time of day. I tried out morning and evening but I've been trying to commit to a rainy setting (so no direct sunlight, just ambient dull color) like this:
[Blocked Image: http://hikecampandtravel.com/south-korea/seoraksan-national-park-01.jpg]
The build in the screenshots had ~700 for the ambient brightness value. I guess I should try cranking it up a bit more

My job is going to get a whole lot more busy with all these contest maps to check

panic intensified when I realized there's a contest.

whoops, I made a mistake for my submission; I accidentally just set the date to the next possible Tuesday instead of checking the schedule first. I'm assuming there's no way to edit the date? I'd take the next open slot (whichever date that is).

eesh sorry I meant to post some feedback after playtest.
Some people already mentioned it but here's a few things that I noticed during the playtest without being too intrusive to the map's gameplay theme:
[Blocked Image: http://i.imgur.com/6RKIK1o.jpg]
I like the Insurgency vibe of long-range engagements and close-quarter fights inside. Like I mentioned in the white caption, so long as it's not too risky for players to move across the map, there's nothing too egregious about the gameplay (Open areas + small rooms = lots of vantage points and angles a player has to constantly worry about).

It's been almost 1.5 years now for me since I started to pursue environment art/level design. I set a goal of 2 years to build a solid portfolio...

I have a part-time job and some support from my family which leaves me enough time to learn, but I don't think I've learned as much as I should have in that time on my own.
I think part of the problem is that I'm split between level design and environment art. Can't figure out how to commit to one...

Anyway, I'd definitely appreciate some advice. I wanna hurry up and actually get out of this damn pipe dream phase!

ahhh im sorry i couldnt make it to the playtest today guys!
I understand if you guys skipped my map.Had some important errands I had to do.

What's -makedevshots ?
Takes snapshots of cameras you set up in your map. You get a pretty neat effect if you compile throughout map's development: http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2754

Can I sign up for the earliest available slot for de_dynasty? I promise I will have a proper radar packed, RZL. I swear on my future newborn's soul, I WILL have radar working!
