  • Wall Worm now has 3ds Max VMF Exporter

    Cool stuff! But, when you show the 2d views in Hammer, it looks like all the brushwork is very split up/tesselated. It was hard to see though, is it like that?

    No. That may be the displacements or models you are seeing.

    The exporter won't break up any geometry. It exports the objects exactly as you make them.

    more great stuff, shawn!

    Thanks Rick!

    I have many ideas for new features... but at some point I need to stop and finish some of the projects I've been wanting to do (the whole reason for making these tools)... the problem is that I have the bad habit of constantly saying to myself, "It would be easier if I didn't always have to ... X, Y and Z..."

    One new thing I'm pretty happy with is the Skybox tag function ... you can design your 3d skybox as part of your level as if it was always part of it--at full scale--and never have to move it off, etc. When you export, things tagged as Skybox objects are automatically rescaled and moved to the sky camera (which is at the location of the Sky Helper in Max).

    I added a VMF Exporter to Wall Worm recently. It was available for a while but didn't have accurate UVW coordinates for brush geometry. That problem is solved. You can now export your scenes directly from 3ds Max into Source (with models, displacements, lights, brush geometry, 2d sky, 3d sky). If you own Convexity (and can add Convexity point/brush entities) the exporter will also export those entities ... and I've made an entity I/O for those (this I/O interface is still under development and poorly documented, but you should be able to figure it out until I've documented it).

    Is it compatible with the Portal 2 version of Source?

    I am assuming it is. It works with every version of Source I've been exposed to so far... but I haven't worked on anything for Portal 2 yet so I cannot say yes from experience. But I'm sure it does. A few mods (like L4D) require an extra setting in the tool's config... but I don't expect any problems.

    But to be thorough, I'll report back in a week or two when I get around to testing Portal 2.

    Since I posted first, I've added Custom Gibs & Prop Data, L4D support, various batch functions, a quick-hull generator*, ragdoll support, bodygroup support and a lot more. Click here for the complete changelog.

    *The Quick Hull feature (video below) is dependant on having a copy of Convexity--a version that is coming out soon. I've been collaborating with Maple3D to integrate that upcoming feature.

    Also, here are some of the more recent videos on some of the features:

  • Wall Worm Sky Writer - Making HDR skies for Source in 3ds

    • March 17, 2011 at 1:30 PM

    Tool is updated:

    Version 0.2 (2011-03-15)

    • Fixed default gamma to be set the value of the Gamma spinner. Previously, the gamma was incorrectly set to 2.2 unless you had changed the value of the gamma spinner.

    • Added half-sized (horizontal 2:1) images to file output list. Can be manually swapped out with current 1:1 images by renaming and running compile. Named same as corresponding side but suffixed with "_half".

    • Added 4x4 pixel copy of Down image that can be used for the down image by swapping/renaming to the down texture name and recompiling. Named same as the down image but suffixed with "_tiny".

    I wanted to share with you the Wall Worm Model Tools. It basically takes away 95% of the pain of getting your models into Source. The catch? Nothing, if you use 3ds Max!

    Anyway, a brief list of features:

    • * Model Settings GUI Inside Max
      * Click export and models can go straight into Source
      * VTF exporting from model
      * Multiple Skin Export
      * Etc, etc.

    You can see videos, download the tool and find docs at http://%7boption%7d .

    Enjoy!

    PS. Thanks to Wunderboy and Cannonfodder for providing the SMD exporters used in the tool.
