Well, the first bits of information has started to drip, and honestly, I have mixed feelings, I never tought it to be "the best shooter ever" the media touts it to be, and actually I have never met anyone who tought so either. It was a great game, very cinematic, but I have played way better games, and first thing that bothered me, was the overall graphical style, the character models were tad too cartoony to me, and obviously they are continuing the theme set by their lead artist.

    But looking at this screenshot

    [Blocked Image: http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/108/reviews/921995_20050419_screen001.jpg]

I can't help but think, the tank and the toons here don't go together so well, actually, they look too much out of place to give that unified and gritty look and feel, so it goes too much to novelty for me and I'm not one bit interested about this game right about now. And why everything has to be so shiny? Are tanks so shiny? I have done photography so long that I can see when something is out of place and that lighting just doesn't cut it, it is just sad.

But enough of my pointless rant, I just wanted to publish my meaningless opinions, I'll be playing WoW anyway so what do I care

Well if you want squeky clean and down right pimpin, you should go to some ad agency/design firm office that is medium size or big, you can't actually call them offices anymore, they have designer tables, cool glass walls, everyhing down right cool, so YOU just don't work in one.

I have worked on several of those, and I love them.

GrayFox and Marcos, this is for you.

Microsoft got so big because they had good business sense, they bought right products (dos) and copied things from other products (graphical interface, just a clone of Mac OS back in the days). The main reason Microsoft got so big, was that they had deals with every major computer retailer to ship windows with every bought computer (this was time before clone computers were invented), and they continue to do so even today. It is not that much easier to use, I have a friend who chose to get a Mac for his first computer, he learned to use the Mac OS first and he says Windows is down right retarded to use, and other friend who has gone for Linux from the beginnig (his father works for University, and in Finland that means basically that you support Linux to the end) and he too says that Windows has flawed UI. These are ofcourse opinions.

So not anything points out that Microsoft got big because they "made great products", they are still popular because they are so widely supported in software market. And as for games, well just translate DirectX to linux and Mac OS and see Windows lose foothold. Granted, there are some nice features in windows, but it's lightyears behind the current Mac OS X, and as for Linux, well it has the ability to do anything if you know how to do it, so basically what Windows has that is so great? Recently many goverment offices in scandinavia has gone for Linux because of the high costs off windows, the same goes for public schools and other branches of goverment.

One of the most important things is to have a firm concept of what kind of map you are making, once THAT is ready then make the changes accordinly, don't go for the direction of solo mappers and do changes as you progress on the map, it's not good when someone is making a staticmesh and you just say that you scrapped the idea for it.

Other thing is to define the overall looks/colors/fell and keep them unified, one of the biggest problems I have seen ever in teamwork is when the members of the team work on their own styles and then the final piece don't work when they are put together, and this is usually done on the end of the project (which means so time to fix your mistakes, bye bye project).

So I guess all I'm saying is, that make designs for the map, and give names to key areas, and stick to them, it is way easier to communicate when everybody know what thay are talking about, example. "What do you think about the corner on the left side of the map, you know where there is a long tunnel before the big drop?" vs. "What do you think about the corner on the 'twilight zone'?" yes I know, my names for certain areas are very very weird, but make up your own.

    Oh, sorry bout that, misunderstood.

It does seem to be the main reason for people to hate a company, just because they are doing good, but the old saying is true, if the company is making alot of money, someone else is losing alot of it.

I don't think that anyone here actually has anything serious against Adobe, most of these toons are just jokers.

People always hate companies that do good.

That do good? And you use Microsoft as an example? Oh, yeah you must be tripping, sorry about that.

Well, children, let me tell you a story about Disne.... uh, Microsoft. Once upon a time the good people of earth lost their interest in inventing new ways to do the same thing and they came up with standards, these things have set of rules, how the same thing done twice has same results, the peace lasted till Microsoft decided that they should be the one to command such power, and they had the internet by the stranglehold by their minion Internet Explorer, and thus they are stepping away from the common set standards while they make money, devilishly laughing by the expense of the end user.

    Good bye IE CSS2 support.

Now, what I say? FUCK IE AND FUCK MICROSOFT!

Adobe is no where near the evil abomination of Microsoft, and Microsoft is not a company that "does good".

i can see furthrer coupling of photoshop and flash, as well as dreamweaver...

Oh god no! Just give me my pixelbased graphics software, and keep them html twiggies and vectorbased flash huggies out of my PHOTOshop. I don't mind getting some better Flash software tho, and Fireworks def is better than Imageready.

There are reasons for illustrator and photoshop to be two different programs.

I agree, good things will ensue before bloodbath, I just hope they fix the "We are Macromedia software, and we don't work well together with other professional software"-syndrome, other than that, it's all good.

If you want some bad things, well check out nVidia when they bought 3dfx, they literally came 3dfx, like nVidia, can they open a can without the hard boiled pros of 3dfx helping them? Tho there is no such fear here, since both of the companies have good roster of professionals, BUT they do so much different things, Adobe will benefit from Macromedias pioneering on the internet multimedia presentation systems, like Flash and Shockwave.

Until the latest versions of Adobe GoLive CS I have not been that hot for it, and have done all my webdesign on Dreamweaver, so maybe they will pick up some nice things from Macromedias strong technical presentation of Dreamweaver and Adobes more design oriented GoLive CS, InDesign easily rocks Freehands ass, it was the otherway around just a while ago. Fireworks rocks Imagereadys ass but can't hold a candle on Photoshop, Illustrator is definedly the defacto vectorbased graphics software, unparalleled in every aspect. Both companies have great technology to share, Adobe has PDF and Macromedia has Flash (the main interest of Adobe I presume) and Shockwave, plus some like Flex and Breeze. Adobe has the advantage of being more thorough multimedia company with support for video with Premiere and audio with Audition, and they had some half-assed 3d with Adobe Dimesions which they integrated to Illustrator (thank god), that was a short overview of the two companies and my analysis.

Long ass post but suck it in.

I think some of you have already heard about this, but for the ones who don't have their sniffers set for design market.

    Adobe buys Macromedia.

For some of you who don't know the companies here, well this is pretty serious business, both are big names in graphics markets, and it will be exciting to see how things will change in the future, especially how things go down for Flash, Freehand and ever so popular Dreamwave, will these be left alone or merged with Creative suite, who knows.

Might have been talked few times here, but why not again and again and again.

Now, this thread differs from others in the fact that now we present ideas of games that would not in any conditions work as a movie.

Simcity: the movie, now would that be a thriller, a blockbuster like day after tomorrow, special efects of buildings falling from sky, non-stop action for well over two hours of streets being build. That would be packed with adrenaline.

Other one would be on the same series, Sims: the movie, you just spend the whole time watching from isometric view while a family consisting of John Travolta, Drew Barrymore and the Olsen twins would just mind their business and they wouldn't even speak a real language, now that would be the biggest catastrohpe since the last weeks action movie box office hit.

Co-op would add replay value to the game, I'm sorry but HL2 and Doom3 are both very very nice games, but I'd rather stab myself straight to the eye than play them through again, it's just pointless, just like wiping my ass twice when I'm on the can.

But if strategically placed co-op points to the game ,like in HL2 when a big fight begins some civilian would be controllable by other player, the game just changes some settings and spawns more mobs or just get a guy following that doom marine around for reasons unknown, that would add replay value to the game, but publishers don't care, the sucker already bought the game, they don't care what you do with it after you have bought it.

Many co-ops are very cheap, sometimes they just spawn another toon to the game and let's your friend take over, but does it matter if it fits to the game? The funfactor just rockets through the roof.

I can think several games that would have been so awesome to play as co-op, games like Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2. Then there are the games that are ment for two or more players, like the xbox baldurs gate and that Fallout brotherhood of what ever, now those are not fun alone, you need a friend to play them with you.

If a game has had co-op me and my cousin have played it, we are nuts for those.

There is a MMORPG (or XROG like the SG calls it) on the makes for Source, it's called Twilight War: After the Fall, it sounds interesting and I'm really looking forward to it, and it would be super snazzy if mapcorians would join me to the twilight war forums

The Hostile Planet looks very much like Neocron does, any comment on this? Neocron is absolutely the best MMORPG in the world, the dev behind it (Reakktor media) just sucks ass big time.

This is what I don't understand, why office maps are always trashed? Is it like a regular rumbling ground for terrorists and swat? That is just stupid!

Why not make a map where everything is in place, that would make it look way more like office, and less like WTH is that.
