Tutorial on what to do

I like the brighter, more colourful look. Much more readable in a game where graphics are not very relevant.
My guess is they will also try to "streamline" the game to appeal to a broader audience and hope it doesn't end up resulting in a watered down version of 4 or 5.

Excellent tool for getting your vmt's done quickly without having to search the wiki or though valves files for the correct parameters.
-
Looking excellent. Are we going to see some moving trains or roller coaster carts?
-
Been a little hesitant to get this right now as supposedly the performance issues are quite bad. Will definitely be picking it up once some of the early issues have been sorted out.
Looking forward to trying to recreate my EW squad from my more recent play through. But a bit sad to hear that gene mods didn't make it into this version

Bump maps with models are no different than world textures. All in the vmt and nothing to do with the 3d program.
Also would like to point out here a program called crowbar. Doesn't seem very well known but is an excellent tool for compiling your .qc files and decompiling models http://steamcommunity.com/groups/CrowbarTool
Also @NihiL is there a reason you called the file qscript.qc instead of corrosivebarrel.qc?
Excellent tutorial though, this is probably the hardest part to do with source and there is so little up to date information about it and is good to see it put into a way that everyone can follow.

although I don't think it can be applied wholly to a super clean/perfect looking environment.
Of course it can. There are plenty of real life clean environments out there. Shopping malls, offices, labs, gyms, hospitals, airports and even modern apartment complexes. Chances are good that if you can imagine it, there is reference for it. Although doesn't need to be taken whole as the questions I mentioned before apply to every environment. A super clean underground station functions roughly the same as a run down ghetto station or some ultra modern cancer research lab still functions somewhat the same as a makeshift CDC emergency tent. You just pick certain criteria to use as reference and ignore things that don't fit your needs.

Technical knowledge and how to apply it at quite different things. Technically I know how to write a novel, but in reality I cant. This combined with where you say "developing aesthetics from scratch" could be harming your ability to develop. I can promise you that no one that has made an official or operation map for CSGO has "developed aesthetics from scratch". It all comes from using real world sources for inspiration or outright copying, and using your technical knowledge to make it all fit within a proper working and tested layout.
Pretty much all the work i see in that gallery looks like its been purely off the top of your head, so in many aspects it falls short because a lot of it lacks the realism the human eye expects to see. Parts of the scene just reads as "wrong". Even when making crazy fantasy scenes like the majority of those images, there is more than enough real world reference to utilize.
I don't want to pick on specific details on the images, but although its all quite fantasy, in essence what you have there is a cathedral, a medieval town an underground station. Simply googling any of those phrases will show a plethora of images ripe for being used as inspiration. And ask simple questions about each image. "what shows in this image that people live here?", "What is it that people do here?" and "how does this place function?". Asking simple questions like that will instantly give your cathedral an alter as people come to see some kind of sermon, will give pews for the people to sit on as well as lights so they can see. Keep following those lines of thought and before you know it, you have a perfectly fine looking environment that doesn't look "unflattering".

Been playing without using the pipboy fast travel, only vertibirds and lots of walking. The world is actually a lot smaller than I first realized, but because its not just endless waste between locations it feels a lot bigger. So many unmarked locations that are interesting or have small environmental story telling. You only plan to go round the corner for a quest, but end up spending hours in some underground car park that leads into the subway tunnels then who knows where after. End up further away from where you wanted to go than when you first started. So much to see that is somewhat hidden and probably wouldn't find if you heavily use fast travel.
Also since I don't fast travel you come across more enemies so health and radiation is much more of a concern. No longer able to hoard 100 stimpacks and just spam them when needed. Now you have to care about sleeping or using radiated food/water to get health. And setting up settlements is more of a priority so you can have guard patrols while moving between locations, as well as more vendors to buy healing items and offload your junk.
Then I got an explosive combat shotgun drop from a legendary super mutant and the game on survival instantly turned into easy mode. Each pellet explodes so anything that doesn't die in the first shot has most of their limbs crippled so cant really fight back anyway. Really is a god tier weapon.

The map got eaten by a workshop bug, so I will have to reupload a new version soon. Just waiting on the new build I am working on before reuploading.

Thanks for having me on board
Quote from jackophantbit like the steam profiles?
would that sort of distract from the topics we should be creating for discussion which are more publicly accessible?
The way I read it, it would do the opposite. You say something in a thread and I click on your profile and am able to see topics you have chosen to spotlight which leads me to your thread.

There's no sense of progression. Your character comes out of the Vault and doesn't seem very impressed that it's been 200 years and that his world was destroyed and is now infested with mutated beasts. Oh and you will also get a workshop and the crafting stuff right away... no build up at all. I came out of the vault and got access to a huge list of mods and stuff that I could build right away, if I wanted to grind for the ingredients.
As much as I am loving the game, this is something that got to me. Its like they were in such a hurry to put you out into the big bad world that they didn't set any context or progression. Why should I care that my wife was killed and my son stolen when I have known them for all of 3 minutes. Then outside of a few comments from Codsworth when you first meet him, there is no shock that the world has gone to the dogs. Then you head to Concord and instantly shoot raiders that you know nothing about. For all your character knows, they could be the good guys since he knows nothing of the world. Then jump in some power armour and wrestle with a deathclaw. Combined with next to no tutorials, the first hour of the game really is the worst.
I really expected they would have a really slow first few hours of the game giving you detailed tutorials on all the new crafting systems, providing context for the world and setting the stage on whats to come. Especially as they would be aiming for an audience that probably hasn't played previous Fallout titles. Even New Vegas managed a decent tutorial by having Sunny Smiles teach you how to shoot, craft medicine and other small things. Then the game set you on a long path to get to New Vegas, making sure you met all the important factions and arrive at all the important towns as you go there.
But with part 4, its as if they created this massive and awesome world before even considering the main storyline. Then just lazily implemented a story to put your player in the world as soon as they could.
Its a shame because outside of that, it is far better than New Vegas once you get into it

Into what box? is it the simple compile or expert compile dialog box you are using? When I was doing the dev shots I compiled the map as normal, then had a new compile set that just runs the game with -makedevshots.
-
Hey, need a bit more info. When you compile does the map load and cycle through all the different camera positions? Have you gave all the cameras unique names? Are you using the compile settings the tutorial gives you?

Honestly it's easily my favorite map of the past three Fallout games. It has the city that Fallout 3 was supposed to have, it has more variety than ever before and it has soooo many locations.
Has so many location, but even some of the un-named areas have personality and not just wasteland like in 3 and NV. Sneaking down a street and there are random buildings with raiders/mutants. And if you do downtown sometimes these places are literally across the road from each other, so you stumble across an area that feels like a warzone with the raiders and mutants fighting. Then get sent flying cos some idiot fired a fat man at something and blew up all the cars in the area.
Really does make the world feel alive when you see factions fighting without even knowing you are there, just random stuff happening.

Played for 100+ hours according to steam for my first play though. I didn't really explore much as the lure of the main story kept pulling me in. Already started a second play though on very hard as a melee character.
I didn't have any issues at all with crashes, though I played totally vanilla. Early mods for Bethesda games are always rushed and crash heavy so I never bother. Did have one quest bug out though and I couldn't complete it, had to google how to fix it and use console commands to end the quest. Glad using the console doesn't disable achievements this time round.
Read only if you completed the game though the BOS. I tried to RP as a distraught parent as much as possible.
QuoteI played though following the brotherhood. When I stumbled upon the police station and seeing Danse in the new T60 armour and how cool it looks, I decided the brotherhood is the way to go to find the people who took my son. And Danse was my follower for pretty much the rest of the game. Spent most of the rest of the game in a brotherhood painted T60 armour and a laser rifle I bought in Diamond city.
Eventually found my way to the institute, and I didn't believe that the old man was telling the truth so i refused to work with him and he kicked me out. Didn't even get to see the woman from Fallout 3 that they asked me to bring back.
The railroad also seemed like a bunch of fools wanting to rescue the synths so i refused to work with them as well.
Then there was the personal story with Danse. I was gutted as he was my follower for the entire game, now his corpse is in some bunker all alone while i am promoted to Paladin. Was so hard to do what had to be done.
Then of course we break into the institute and proceed to kill everyone. I shot the old man on his deathbed, and the place was nuked.
My new play though I will explore a lot and be in no hurry to complete the main quest. There is so much to see despite people complaining before release how the map is so small. A lot of the stuff downtown is quite condensed so there is plenty to explore and so much environment story telling.
Also I feel that they might have been a little too reserved with some of the new features. Like with the gun and armour customization. Why cant all that stuff be painted. Same with the power armour, I am surprised they didn't allow you to craft some paint and colour the parts. Maybe I just miss it from MGS5, but seems like a missed opportunity to me. And I don't like relying on mods for things that really should be in the base game.
And the body armour layers was such a cool idea, but there seems to be so little available and not a lot you can do to have such a unique looking character. Spent most of the game in the vault suit and leather armour. But not sure why as I didn't understand what the difference between the different materials were. The game doesn't explain much about weapon and armour weight and how much it effects your AP and sneak. So I just did a majority of questing in power armour and only got out when doing smaller odd jobs.

I suspect its just a case of typing "clip" in the texture browser and picking a different one by mistake. Then not changing it later because it doesn't really matter.

I don't really want dual 144hz, more just pointing out that it's what i could get for the price of the curved monitors. A gaming screen and a miltimedia screen sounds like a good idea.
And so essentially to bring this to a machine that can give me another 4-5 years I would also need a new processor?
-
Just had a quick look at the curved monitors, about £800. That's more than I am willing to spend especially when a 27" 144hz dual monitor setup would cost about the same. Although dual 27" is also probably overkill. I'm currently using one of these, the price listed on that site is WAY overpriced.
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS24D300HS/ZA
I will most likely buy a matching pair of new gaming monitors and mount them on something like this.
http://www.amazon.com/Mount-It-Monit…1/dp/B00DQ3AE5E
My current 24" is fine in terms of size, but would like a second one so i can run mapping/modelling programs on separate monitors, or run a game/movie on one while being able to see messages or game wikis on the other.

Hey @jackophant. Since you provided good info on the gaming laptop, I will also take you up on this offer

Not a new build, but upgrading my current rig. I bought the computer about 5-6 years ago. Was a prebuilt at a decent price but has since become a bit old. a few years ago I replaced the gfx card, psu and added an extra 4gb of ram. Then shortly after I bought a new case for it since the gfx card was too big for the case and I had to take a hacksaw to it and cut away the hard drive drawers to fit it. But now I find that during gaming my cpu and mobo temps can reach near 100deg. So thinking to replace the mobo as well as installing a new cpu fan since the mobo is a pretty old model and doesn't support usb 3.0, variable speed fans and other stuff. Additionally since I have bought a new table I finally have space for a dual monitor setup so looking at that and would like advice on monitors. And will also add an SSD drive.
Current specs are
CPU: [/b]http://ark.intel.com/products/41316…-Cache-2_80-GHz Motherboard:[/b] https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7P55D_LE/ Memory:[/b] 4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc…N82E16820148149 GFX:[/b] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc…N82E16814202003 Case:[/b] http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/c…ic-white-window Power Supply:[/b] http://www.corsair.com/en/tx750w
A couple of things I would like to know. firstly will the psu support the new mobo and a quality cpu fan with the rest of the stuff I have? No need for watercooling as its already pretty cold here and the new case gives good air flow.
The gfx card only has 1 x hdmi, 1 x dvi single and 1 x dvi dual. Will that cause a problem when looking to have a dual monitor setup?
Is it also worth dropping the ram for some decent stuff, or will what i have keep for a while longer?
And of course recommendations on a new mobo, fan, SSD and monitor/s.
