It's nice to see someone is trying to keep this franchise alive. I'm not sure how fun it'll end up being, but it's nonetheless sweet seeing classic C&C vehicles, buildings, etc in such detail.

lol wtf, that sounds terrible. Is that a different mode to Conquest or something? It seems like madness you'd spawn right next to enemies or even anywhere near them.

I think it's a question of gameplay vs graphics.

Weird stuff. You have to be careful with the 360's picture settings, one of them (I forget which) makes it sound like it'll produce a superior picture when in actual fact it can really mess up the tonality and contrast if you use the wrong one. It's labelled something like 'expanded colour' which I initially assumed was always good to have enabled, but it's actually all about matching up with the TV's settings and on high-quality screens usually results in all your shadow detail being lost because the black levels are fucked up. Dunno if similar stuff is going on with the XBone.

Yeah it's weird that Sony has intentionally held back on talking about certain things Microsoft is practically screaming about. Even the PS3 could act as a set-top box with some software available in the PlayStation Store. I guess they want to keep the focus on the games.

  • Carmack officially leaves iD

Yeah, I've not really seen id as being particularly relevant for a long, long time. Sure they had huge impact with Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake — and the pre-2000 engines of those games were a huge thing for the industry and still sit behind the technology of many of today's games. But apart from those successes, what has id really accomplished?

I can't think of anything they've done for about 13 years that's really had much of an effect on the community or industry. Doom 3 didn't do much for me even if it was a decent game, and Rage failed to draw me in beyond its technology too. The engines of those games haven't taken off either.

Carmack has definitely been wasted there. Game engines are too mature to be that interesting for him to work on, you can't have the same mindblowing steps forward that were accomplished in the early days. He's a pioneer and inventor, he should be building something like Oculus Rift which has the potential to transform gaming experiences if key technological issues can be overcome — something he specialises in. Not endlessly iterating graphical steps forward until the day he dies.

I hope he uses the rest of his life to bring as many of the incredible steps forward he did in his earlier days. I suspect he had some trouble letting go of id, but now he's done it he's a free man.

so the soundtrack is up on spotify and i like it, but the main theme is butchered this time (i liked the Bf3 theme tho)

Been listening to it this morning and it's some pretty good shit, much better than the BF3 soundtrack IMO. You're right about the theme, Warsaw is a good expansion of the traditional theme (I like the twist it adds) but I'm still waiting for something that reaches the orchestral majesty of Battlefield 2142's.

BTW, hear the version of the theme the London Philharmonic Orchestra did? God damn!

It's not good, but it's not bad. Edge tends to have lower scores because it considers 5/10 average, rather than like most gaming publications that for some reason have settled upon about 70–80% as being average. I didn't actually look at the score though, I read the review which seemed to be mostly positive about it while admitting the combat lacks depth.

It does seem like a lot of mixed reviews are popping up on Metacritic now. Kind of disappointing but we'll see what the average is after a few days. The main complaint definitely seems to be the lack of combat complexity that we all saw coming.

Looks like it's getting good reviews. Kotaku gave it a nice one, and even often-harsh Edge is happy with it:

I tried to play this last night with some friends and every single server we went on had massive amounts of rubber banding, crashing, un-able to connect and just general lag. It's a really horrible experience, I understand they keep getting DDOS'd though? Just wish the game would get fixed and it'd all work, I don't remember BF3 being this bad at launch.

Anyway, the trailer below looks great and it's nice to see some of the old maps back. It'd be nice to see some other maps too.

God damn, every Battlefield trailer just leaves me wanting to wet myself. How can there still be people not totally on board with the Battlefield experience?? I talk to a lot of people IRL who are completely indifferent towards it yet wet themselves over every new CoD.

It actually didn't occur to me the returning maps would feature levolution, very happy to see they won't be largely straight ports. I had countless good times on Caspian Border and Gulf of Oh Man in particular.

Same. Had no idea he was on the team now, but that seems like a good omen of the chances of those being integrated into the core experience. It'd also add some great value that'd encourage people to buy the Steam version even if they have the free version.

Are future updates still going to be freely released or is it all going to be Steam-only now? I don't have a problem with that, but it should be handled carefully from a PR point of view if so.

Yeah Microsoft is unhealthily obsessed with the squares. It works great on touch devices, really not so much on everything else. I think after Microsoft realised it was a big success on phones they got over-excited and decided to implement it literally everywhere because squares.

Yeah I was joking and just wanted a cheap opportunity to post that Battlefield 4 glitch. In reality I've been impressed by most Ghosts media I've seen, it looks better than I was expecting. To say it outright looks bad is nuts.

In all fairness though, they should be going the extra mile with a game as monumentally big as this. With developers like DICE putting together virtually perfect aesthetics, this is just disappointing.
