The mod is really better than the screens/videos can tell. It plays nice online which was my fear due to issues with Source engine and vehicles. It could be a blast with more weapons and game modes.
woa, how come I never eard of this? Look at the detail of this h.poly model!

Looks like a phenomenal mod!
Remember this mod from like 2004/2005
I wonder how they've got around the vehicle physics/tracking problem that no other source mod could/can figure out.
Maybe the vehicles are in fact the player models? Just a thought, I don't know :X

Shame the weapons dont seem to move around on the vehicles in the direction they are firing.

Looks to me like they do (notice the cannon).
My guess is they have a weapon selection, and only the selected weapon moves. And then it seems like, from the pictures, that the other weapons' positions remain unchanged upon switching weapons. ie. no resetting.
Ah, I was just looking at the teaser trailer, guess its out of date.

it's just nitpicking anyhow. i'd say it's pretty damn impressive someone made a mod like this.

Obviously not, the vehicles have the same physics features than the HL2 jeep, for example. I played today online and it responded quite well (and I had no a great ping).
The only problem is most coders cannot figure the way to predict vehicle movement, but Empires did long ago. And there is a simple work around to make it work decent at least, fixing the camera jittering. This mod, whatever it does, does well.

There is a turret and moves around (machine gun and grenade launcher, very cool btw), rest weapons are static. But it makes sense because you have to face other vehicles.
As I said, the technical stuff is very well solved. Gameplay needs more depth, but is worth as is now as well.
I remember that I saw some awful screens and models some time ago, they really got some really nice stuff going on now!
Those vehicle models look pretty good even though I don't really feel that the texturing is any good on them. The environments are not particularly interesting either.
I've taken the Alpha for a spin and overall I was impressed. The visuals are polished and the sound is good too. The weapon particle effects are awesome and the environments are very destructable.
The only thing I feel is letting it down is the controls. It uses WASD for steering and acceleration and as a result it feels very stiff and not very vehicle like. If they impliment mouse steering it would be awesome.
*edit: apparently they plan to overhaul the controls and integrate joypad support after migrating to the Orange Box SDK
reminds me of twisted metal. OH how i loved twisted metal.
This mod will be made public tomorrow, here's a preview

And BTW, this is odd, but I was making a map for another car combat based mod 2 and half years ago, which died. Then DIPRIP started and I offered it to them, however the time passed away and this mod seemed like dead too. That's not the case, fortunately, and seems my map will see the light of day finally. I worked a bit on it recently, and well, isn't great but I hope it helps this mod to grow as is quite fun and only needs more maps to take advantage of it. It's not part of initial release, and I'll let the DIPRIP team to work on it if they consider it necessary, could be taken much further.

They sure could use a more experienced mapper to bring the maps up to par with the vehicles.
Sounds like a job for Dux-man!
