it's a telepholone pole, for backwards compatibility

It still ooks a bit too clean for city themed map.

not all country's have their electric wiring under the ground..

-
okay.. but i still think it looks kinda off, between all those shiny buildings

looks good though!

-
He's right, I've never seen a telephone pole in a built up area like this, it looks out of place.
Looking much better though, now you need to dirty it up a bit

-
perhaps replace the telephone pole with a small tree, bush or something?
-
the telephone pole is fine, it's just so barren that it stands out and looks out of place. could also be because it is wood, if it were concrete or steel it wouldn't be so bad. maybe if there were more poles or other connections were made with the buildings it might work well.
downtown seattle has hundreds of those wires going around. i almost couldn't image it without them.
-
yeah the fact that it's wooden is weird and the placement seems a little arbitrary. Concrete one would work or metal... just looks like one you'd see on a road trip on some two lane road.
maps coming along great though.
I'd go see that movie.

Out of all the non-Build engine remakes of Duke3D's Hollywood Holocaust, that has got to be the best adaption of it on Source I have seen thus far, even if it may be only based on it this time round. I like how you're going about this and also adding more structure into all the buildings (unlike other remakes I've seen) Some good stuff there, I love it already - keep it up.
-
Map is looking awesome but as people said the pole is too dirty for that clean city.
-
Killertomato: I live in Sydney and there's wooden telegraph poles all through the city (more than likely due to poor town planning). I also love wires and want some running around the map. If people feel they look out of place I'll get rid of 'em though. Purhaps I'll make a cement pole if there isn't one already.
RA7: The street is still very empty, I haven't added a single decal. There will be dirt and rubish although I'm staying clear of dilapidated and damaged architecture.
Instead of making parody adds for billboards, posters, etc I'm going to contact some mods and ask if they'd mind me placing adds for them in my map.
-
I've made negligable progress on the map since the last screenshot. The telegraph poles are gone and I've added a bit more street level detail in that area, building entrances etc.
I'm still strugling with the outdoor area though. I tried to introduce some brick buildings for some variety but they looked out of place. I'm happy with the concrete look but don't want it to get monotonous.
As it's a business district I'd like to have some shopfronts but I'm lacking ideas and not sure how to implement them.
Here's a shot of an attempt I had at making a shopping mall. At the moment I'm not going to use it but thought I'd see if you guys thought it was salvagable.
First shot is what I originally invisaged. Second is blank for any suggestions.

I really like the top part! That base texture doesn't fit at all.
Keep going!

I had some time (not as much as I would have liked) over christmas to make some more textures and refine the outdoor area, adding a bit of ground level detail. Wesley told me the assault road texture looks like shit and after initially defending it, I'd have to aggree with him so here's a WIP of a new road texture I made.
I also caught up with an old friend who knows a thing or two about level design and he suggested some awesome ideas for storefronts which I was really struggling with. I still need to make more textures before further refining the brushwork and getting into the serious detailing using props and overlays. Slapped a few around just for effect.
