I don't possibly see how you could say that... visually, Doom 3 was a radical departure from Quake 3, which was a radical departure from Quake 2, which was a radical departure from Quake, which was radically different from Doom.

Outside of brown there's not much of a common denominator, and even then Quake 3 was pretty vibrant and Doom 3 leaned toward black instead.

Another engine that wont run on consoles? I think every id game so far (including it's engine) has gone to consoles.

He says in his presentation that the engine is designed for PC, PS3, 360, and even Mac too.

Wait a minute. I thought this was the Doom 3 engine but with "Mega Texture" support developed by the Quake Wars Team. It's not a new engine is it? D:

The mega texture was in doom3, but i don't know what form. Id & SD (i assume) have both worked extended and utilised this for QW:ET.

I think was we are see in Id tech5 is an evolution of the mega texture tech

since mega texture in this generation is only for terrain, im assume if _all_ textures in the demo are unique then surely this is a major revision on the current tech.

I think one of the key features missed is that this demo uses the equivalent of 20gb of textures (although doesn't really show it), so reading into that the new tech (imo) is very impressive, in terms of memory utilisation.

Well, Doom 3 tech was a nightmare enough on the 360, let alone for D3 on the original Xbox when they called Raven in to help out VV. We got raped CPU-side on Q4 on the 360, but apparently the 360 GPU didn't even crack a sweat. I don't envy Nerve or Z-Axis (who the hell thought that was a good idea, btw?) trying to get QW and Megatexture onto the consoles. I mean, it'll batch well... but that's about it.

That said, I'll give Carmack credit for keeping id in a fairly strong position; without his tech (console-friendly or otherwise) I think they'd be in a lot of trouble. Interested to see how long they carry on independently after he retires, which would be after this game if he sticks to his original plan.

I think lots of alcohol was involved in the console ports

Yeah, I'm really not impressed with this. Looks like Doom3, except... outside.

^^ This, Crysis shits over this 3000 times over.
