proabably add a little more color too the bark.
Good model construction. Unless they're aspen, those lighter ones are vastly too light. Up the contrast in any case.
Nice work. But I gotta say I'm glad that speedtree is the way of the future. ![]()
speedtree?

soo purdy...
how does their technology work?
err you can probably find answers there---> http://www.speedtree.com/
There is also a catalog of trees and normals/spec maps to pick from. Also they have a editor you can dl on there website and play around with.
Nice trees Farles, sorry for derailing your thread ![]()
so basicaly its a bunch of prefabs that are automaticaly placed... thats nothing real new.
Dude, no. It's a sophisticated means of programmatically building procedural trees with limitless variety. It will animate trees and can build shadow maps and LODs for you all the way down to rendering the tree at various angles to a set of billboards for accurate 2d representation at distance.
And the point is, while it is powerful it is also fast and easy to use as a developer.
Sorry for the hijack. I like your trees Farles.
auto texturing? They sorta look cartonny rather than hyperrealistic. What if I wanted to stylised tree?
Nice trees.
It's actually nice to see some bright bark. However I think should be slightly darker even if it's supposed to be bright. Fits most on the green tree imo.
Trees are white because they are birches, and birches are white. These are viewed in HLMV, so no big deal about lighting. Check Dux's new screenies of his map to see how they look ingame.
as for speedtree, yea ok its fun and easy to use, but doesnt work for Hl2 for many reasons and I just hate automatic stuff like Speedtree and AutoUV mapping, you totally loose the art behind modelling. What would you do if you add programs that made maps for ya? ![]()
there already are... Loads of games has.. i can even remember a fps shooter (dont remember its name, but it was something like delta force meets rainbow six thing) with it..
The thing is, and this also applies for models; when you want to create something that looks specifically like something, you'll have to make it by hand.. but if you want to make a forest, use a generator and edit it afterwards..
You gotta learn to embrace new technologies
even if they mean that you're outta jobs ;p
out of all the things i can model, a tree i cannot, i've never been able to model a tree, klevestav knows this.
Speedtree is cool. And no, it doesn't auto-generate textures, just the tree shapes. Using Speedtree, all your trees could be different. But they are highly configurable so you can tweak values to make it look like a certain type of tree.
That screenshot is from either Gears of War or UT2k7.
speedtrees is also not worth using yet.
i'd hit it.
speedtree is slightly on the expensive side
