Mapcore Challenge - Engine Preference

Unreal 4 right now is the cutting edge for any kind of level design work I have seen. Cryengine is a close second but fails on community support and intuitiveness imo. In this day and age I am going to have to say that source is looking pretty last gen right now on a lot of fronts.

I also have to say that learning a new engine isn't really as bad as it may seem. If you understand the ins and outs of something like source you have already learned a great deal about how all 3d engines work. Chance are a lot of you would pick up UE4 really quickly if you watched over someones shoulder while they worked on something in less than a week.

What if we encouraged people to stream their work so others could observe and learn? Maybe it could coincide with the streaming functionality to be added to Mapcore soon

I'd love to see a doom/doombuilder competition at some point

Out of those choices I'd probably go with the following in order

    1)Source

2)Unity w/Probuilder (maybe this isn't really feasible, the demo is missing some features)

3)UE4 (problem with this is you have to pay)

I would be super into an old engine challenge (Quake or Doom would be mega-sick).

Source would be a good choice just because of how easy it is to get up and running (Haven't tried UE4 though). I would say that challenges would be better tied to specific games though.

Since UE4 is a monthly payment, i think maybe a challenge allowing the use of both engines would be great.

I don't use unreal (yet), but I think it allows for feedback as your making the map, and generates publicity for newcomers (like myself). Cool for playtesting, just invite people watching the stream.

UE4 baby! Could always team up if people don't know how to create assets, have 1 LD/scripter and 1 env art dude.

You guys are providing us with some excellent feedback. Keep the discussion going! Some reactions to your comments below:

For some reason I never considered that, it's not a bad idea. An ambiguous theme might work for it

I don't know if you can remember FMPONE but I already proposed a design challenge in which participants are free to use the engine of their choosing. We liked it, but postponed it to the winter period. So Chris, it's coming eventually

The Challenge will have it's own support thread in which people can help each other. Additional streaming would be a huge bonus. So we should encourage and give them a platform if they are willing to do that.

You guys are not alone. I'm actively looking into the possibilities of doing something a long these lines.

My vote is for source simply because I'm pretty new to the whole scene and source is the only thing I know at the moment. And the competition better not start until next week, I'm going on holiday tomorrow D:

For me, I see this as an excellent opportunity for people to learn a brand new engine and have support from everyone on the Core.

About the cost, you only have to sub once and cancel and you can use the engine for good, you just don't get the updates.

There's also a ton of tutorials on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/UnrealDevelopmentKit/playlists

In the marketplace you can download a ton of demo's and their source files to see how these things are made too!

I subbed when it was version 4.2.1 and cancelled my sub.. and still got the new 4.3.0

Don't forget, like Pogo said, that people can team up if they wish to do so. Could make it less scary. Plus, you would not only be making it for the Core. It can be submitted to the workshop as well.

OK all interesting stuff, yeah I forgot about the other contest. Excited to see this, whichever engine people prefer.

    ^^This.

Im not the most experienced Level Designer, but I'm a capable env artist. So teaming up could be a win-win.

UE4 has some really cool new stuff, its a good opportunity to set loose some experienced artists and designers on this software.

If it ends up on Source, I would be willing to share some time with participants on helping set up Source projects inside 3ds Max and answer various workflow questions, etc. As I'm interested/focused on getting people to start using Max instead of Hammer, this invitation is only for those willing to tackle the project in Max.

I'd be happy to join a UE4 contest. We could even give it a UT theme, use the UE4 UT pre-alpha and submit the maps.

Hmmmm. I would like to make a small DM map for UT. Would be a good incentive for me to learn the tools.
