Which engine do you think we should use for our next Challenge? 103

    1. Unreal Engine 4 (46) 45%
    2. UDK (1) 1%
    3. CryEngine (3) 3%
    4. Source (48) 47%
    5. Unity (5) 5%

    Hello Mapcore,

We're always thinking about what to do next and instead of going in blind, we like to see some numbers and gauge interest levels. Of course it's well known that we are a Source oriented community but time hasn't stand still and the engine market has changed. Id tech has faded into history. Source is loved, updated and widely used but in a lot of regards outdated as well. UDK has been and still is a great driving force behind last gen games and indie's but the same can be said, to a lesser agree, for Unity. Not to forget the new kids on the block with their subscription based models, namely Unreal Engine 4 and CryEngine that are leading us into the future.

Which brings us to the question at hand. If the Core would do a Challenge, which engine would you like to see being used?

Please take a moment to fill in our poll.

    Thanks!

Source man, in the end far more people have access to it, which means more people can play those creations and that is what it should be about. Sharing your creations with other people.

If we're mostly working with regards to level design, then it really has to be Source, due to the variety of games that use it and allow access to the editor.

In regards to some of the comments. The challenge hasn't been made yet. So it doesn't have to be level design per se. By the looks of it Source will win and then we could look into something like a map for one of the games using Source. However, I for one would rather see Unreal Engine 4 win. Some of you have been experimenting with it and what I've seen so far impresses me a lot. Especially in light of the recent Unreal Tournament news, I'm really hoping some Core members will eventually step up and make something for that (none challenge related btw).

Vilham is right about the sharing of course. My philosophy has always been:"Sharing, is caring".

I have to vote source because that's all my laptop can really handle. Also because it's what I'm most familiar with. Thought I want to branch out, are the level editors any more complicated than hammer?

While I would like to see a UE4 Challenge in the future, it would be very hard for me to justify me doing that with my current video card and the subscription issue. Meanwhile, virtually everyone here has at the very least a single Source game and this is the engine I have the most experience in. So, Source it is. UDK would also be an interesting choice but it is supplanted by UE4. CryEngine and Unity are completely alien to me.

    Sooouuuuuuurce.

Personally, I favour well rounded competitions that draw on design skills as well as technical and artistic skills. Using an engine that doesn't have a particular game associated with it such as Unity or UE4 (maybe I'm talking out of my arse here though?) seems prohibitive to any element of gameplay design in the competition.

I think a CS:GO arms race or demolition map making challenge would be a great way for people to exhibit multiple skills.

I would honestly try another engine than Source, but I'm not a really good env artist and I can't know if I will have the time.

UE4 all the way, would love to see how others tackle PBR workflow.

The reasons for source are strong ones and valid but I'd love to see what this community could do with UE4. It's seriously impressive, especially with blueprint.

Castle did some impressive level design for the upcoming UT.

I am d/l'ing the current UT4 build at the moment (it is 1.1 GB just FYI) so perhaps I can start on that sometime early next week One day, I too will be good at this... I hope.

If it's pure leveldesign then I understand many people will want to use Source, but if there is some levelscripting, puzzles or just something that looks pretty, then UE4 is the shiz

I think though, much like how hard it is to pick an engine for any given project, each have their own advantages - not to mention how time consuming it is to learn a new one. For me, it's more important to see the results, than give a monkey about what engine it actually is.

If it where up to me, contests would be on all engines, leaving it up to the person to decide which is best for them.

For some reason I never considered that, it's not a bad idea. An ambiguous theme might work for it

The thing with Source is, that everyone is able to use the SDK without having to purchase it first. This may help the variety of submissions at a contest and that's why i voted for Source.

Regardless of this thing, i'd like to see the UE4 engine in a contest, too.

    Just my 2 cents.
