Well, can't you optimise if you are doing something for pros?

Not like an engine is natively good… CS:S was rubbish with its hitbox detection for my experience.

When I was working at Nerve I headed up the design of a new arena shooter based on everything we have learned from UT and Quake 3 in a highly competitive light. We tried so hard to get funding for the project and nobody would bite. Hence my unemployed status as of late. However with all of that said I know in my gut it can work and I know how to do it too. If Counter strike and Team Fortress 2 can survive all these years damn it I know a well executed arena shooter can too. Especially one powered by UE4.

I think being on UE4 isn't much of a blessing for a highly competitive shooter. CSGO and TF2 are really good as competitive games because of Source's lack of any input lag and low minimum requirements. UE, in my experience, tends to focus on cool looking stuff with tons of expensive effects. So long as Epic keeps input lag to a minimum, it should be a good time.

One of the first things we set out to do was to reduce the input lag on UE3. It remains to be seen if UE4 even has similar input lag issues to begin with.

I agree that new, cutting edge engine almost inevitably means a bad competitive experience, but who knows what we're in store for here. They might go TF2 style and really nerf the graphics so people can actually... play the game (I'm looking at you, UT3)

Please no cartoon graphics and no realism either! I want crazy shit. Demons, hellspawn, cyborgs, mutants, space marines, etc, You know, the good stuff.

I hope they ditch the late "epic style"… from UT3 to GoW to Bulletstorm everything looks pretty much the same; those space soldiers with oversized boots have made their time.

UT3 gets a bad rep in my opinion. It had everything there to be successful it just didn't quite happen. Not sure why, though I remember having some technical (lag-based) issues with it when I played. Maybe that could have had something to do with it. It certainly stopped me playing.

    bulletstorm > ut3 and gears 1-3

it had color and awesome composition and hardly any post filters and high framerate and FUN =)

    taking bets:

    1) it will be free to play selling vanity items only ala tf2 dota

    2) easily extendable if you have a ue4 subscription but not otherwise

    3) graphics will be heavily focused on readability and framerate o/

    OR

    4) devaildating point number 3 its just gonna be ut3 as a downloadable content package for that ue4 launcher

    5) will have a browser client

    6) wont be on consoles until its a huge hit

UT3 simply came out when people were dead tired of that hardcore sci-fi porn orgy of redundant pointless metal pipes* and lasers.

All the rest might be true but average gamer doesn't care or notice… it's not like it was advertised as CPL material.

*does anybody else remember the "pipes are the new crates" slogan?

Warby: although I agree with the short "review", please check what I wrote about it a couple weeks ago in the Now Playing topic and let me know what you think. In short: after my first session I haven't picked it back up yet :/

Plus: on the visual style it just undeniably borrows too much from GoW.

After UT99 it slowly began to get more heavier and more bloated. It became more about the tech (As most things do) rather than the game. I'm far too cynical a person, but I sure would like them to remember what made UT99 as great as it was and bring that back.

also paid mods/mod marketplace, did I hear that right? That sounds pretty cool.

I'm a bit worried about it being free and just this weird, to me that just means it will fall into obscurity fast and hard. Sort of like how Alien Swarm was a big "hey mod the fuck out of our engine" thing but not much came of it.

I've lost interest already. Hearing the word "free" just makes me worry. But if the community is making it, maybe they will copy paste UT99. Hooray!
