I'm really enjoying my huge ass city in sim city 4 guys.

Never played SimCity 4 much but isn't it kind of similar when it comes to small maps and neighborhoods? Anyways, I've tried SC4 on multiple machines and I always got graphics problems :S Engine seems a bit crappy.

I think I'm gonna try to play SimCity the way it's meant to be played next, working on my own region and specializing each city and see how that goes...

Reading this is a bit disconcerting:

I really hope they figure this shit out because it'll be tragic if such a great-looking game is buried beneath issues that just shouldn't be there and kills off the simulation genre for good.

Bit over dramatic no? "kills off the simulation genre for good" Sim City isn't even close to being the best sim game even if it may be the most known.

What other good simulation games have there been during the past 10 years? Other than Tropico I can't think of any other particularly worthwhile ones, the millions of hours I'd spend with things like Theme Park, RollerCoaster Tycoon, SimCity, etc are long gone. The Sims is about as close as I've gotten to a fun experience, others seem too focused on being ultra-realistic or designed for old men and just aren't very enjoyable.

I'm not saying the genre is actually dead, but it feels so under-loved that when a big-budget game like SimCity comes out it makes you realise how good this genre could be (retarded technical issues aside). There're virtually no well-known or mainstream simulation games nowadays and that kind of sucks. It seems like most simulations nowadays are made for old men who don't care about a remotely polished experience.

That seems pretty crazy, and a huge oversight on the designers' side.

Designers are the bane of this industry.. Am I right, Vilham?!

Yeah sure sim isn't mainstream anymore, but that has been the case for a long time. However there are still loads of sims out there, most made by small european studios. I have bought quite a few on steam sales at random points, can't remember the names off the top of my head but they were all quite good.

The more I play this game the more I see that its completely broken to the core. Anyone else noticed the population inflation? The city adviser is always requesting more residential areas to bring in more workers no matter what I do. What is annoying is that from all the people who live in my town, only 20% or so actually do something (either work, shop or study), the other 80% just sits around watching TV all day apparently. I wonder if they are just phantoms to make the game look like it handles more people than it actually does.

I feel very disrespected for paying full price for this broken mess. Anyway, back to SC2k on my lunch breaks

    Sounds just like the UK???

I'm seriously thinking of getting SimCity 4 with Rush Hour and waiting until the next sequel of this. It seems like they have a good foundation for a few generation of SimCity but there are far too many problems for it to be considered ready. All these simulation issues are... crazy.

    Go ahead : http://store.steampowered.com/app/24780/

Also get the NAM (Network Addon Mod) plugin for SC4, it's essential : http://www.wiki.sc4devotion.com/index.php?title=NAM

“The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing. They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between both players and cities. As well, they’re doing cloud storage of save games, interfacing with Origin, and all of that. But for the game itself? No, they’re not doing anything. I have no idea why they’re claiming otherwise. It’s possible that Bradshaw misunderstood or was misinformed, but otherwise I’m clueless.”

Explains the shitty AI. I really hope they can improve it in the coming patches. Wasn't that the whole point of games becoming "services"? Ongoing patchwork, content, etc.

things aren't looking so good for them...

I'm interested to see if EA will start banning origin users for using this mod.

This is actually getting pretty silly. A PR-disaster of epic proportiones.
