He's funny anyway and people actually take him seriously. Either way, his points are valid in that video and everyone pretty much feels that way I think.

I don't endorse pirating but shit like this will just make me walk on over to isohunt.

If you've bought the game then of course, just torrent it and play it that way. Totally fine imo.

But I hate it when people think they're suddenly entitled to pirate it (without buying), if you don't support the game then just let it go.

I'm not gonna defend always online DRM though, it's pretty stupid but from what I've read it's just the way the whole social aspect of the game is designed, and you can't get around the servers for that (+ some of the simulation is server side apparently?). A bit of a dodgy design choice but with their focus on the mainstream market I can see why they chose to do it.

It seems kind of bizarre that some of the simulation is done externally, but I guess that's one way of escaping the fact that many people simply won't have the hardware for such sophisticated computations. That would also go towards explaining why the online factor is holding back having larger cities, because there's a limit on how much capacity even their server farms have.

I love sim city but why should I put up with this bullshit DRM? The straw that broke the camels back for me was Diablo 3. I find myself constantly buying games I love but then torrenting them anyway to just get around their retarded DRM.

So I have to be their customer and then either be punished by their DRM or have to go and risk torrenting software in order to avoid that punishment? This is not okay.

He's not saying that it's good or even okay from the publisher's perspective. Chimeray just reasons that it's ethically okay for the rightful purchaser of the game to pirate it to circumvent shitty drm.

No it's not okay, nor did I say that? I'm just saying the damage has been done and you don't have a whole lot of options if you don't wanna be a dick about it. Sad as it is.

If you torrent and play a game you obviously like it and the devs deserve support, sadly you'll also send a message to the publishers that regardless of the DRM you still buy it, even so... I don't think it's fine to just pirate and backstab the developers for a choice they likely weren't involved in. But oh well, such is life in video game dev.

So no, you don't have to be their customer. If you wanna boycott them then just don't buy it but don't go pirating it either, simple as that really. If you wanna be a lost sale then be one. Don't be a hypocrite and play it anyways. But that's just my opinion and I'm sure there's different ways of looking at it.

The irony is that the only reason that online DRM exists is to discourage pirating. But I suppose they inadvertently cause it to increase (although I haven't really seen any statistics about it). They piss on their legitimate customers, simple as that.

I'll tolerate SimCity's DRM though since their game seems to be set up more like an MMO, which is a stupid design choice, I'd rather have it be offline entirely.

(Apparently the cities are small to encourage playing together with other people in the district. But I don't have any friends, lolololol. Yeah, not liking the social focus of the game.).

jebus so much hate, I'll wait a few weeks and it'll all be fine just like with diablo. Doesn't take a genius to see the pattern emerging here, why fight it.

Diablo wasn't fine though - It was a poor game with awful DRM.

And why should we have to wait a few weeks anyway to be able to play a single player game properly?

Yea totally not cool. Sad truth is im a huge Sim City fan, and i want to play this game. If general consensus is it isnt worth the money im not going to pay for it (because im only going to play it for a few hours). I dont see why i should hand over £40 for something i believe is of bad quality, and since people dont seem to release demos of games anymore im likely going to torrent this in some weeks time. All these opinions of mine may change however at any point, who knows maybe even after i torrent it and decide i actually think it is worth the money. Stranger things have happened.

Pirating was designed for shit like this, its natural selection for software.

Got my boxed copy today, still haven't been able to play a game, I've been messing with it for an hour. First, I wasn't able to join or start any game, it kept saying "Unable to create your city at this time". So I kept trying, it finally loaded a city - but I wasn't able to use any menu options. Then I kept trying, was able to start a city, laid out the basics - and the display froze. I could hear it still running, I could even hit keyboard commands and hear the city speed changing. So I alt tabbed out and ended the game in the task manager and started it up again. Now it prompts me to play the tutorial. Ok. I start the tutorial, it loads the tutorial city, but there's no tutorial. No popups, no directions, and I can't click any of the menu buttons. I can scroll around, and get to the options menu, but can't progress. Restarted the game, same thing.

And then it finally worked. And I got lost in it for 3 hours... I do think the small city sizes are going to be a problem. You get to the point where you really have filled the city fairly quickly. Just not sure that it's worth it. I don't understand how they didn't anticipate the demand.

Had a few weird issues with the tutorial not going away, but came back after a couple hours and it was fine. Having fun so far. Small cities seem weird but I guess it's about building multiple cities in a region and connecting them, not building a self contained metropolis that does everything. It seems to be a more simplified game though, whether that's bad I don't know. I was able to build a fairly stable city my first go. Compared with Simcity 4, where it was was pretty much Bumtown 90% of the time for me, I'm guessing that means this one is a bit easier.
