because there's still the same amount of consumers? You'd have to subsidize one hella lot to stop companies going bust for the endless of other reasons.

Because the tax breaks and subsidies don't allow them to do business, they allow them to make more profit..a standard of performance which the shareholders expect them to beat next quarter. No matter how much money you make or what your margin is the shareholder always expects it to be better next time.
