I don't have any experience of this type of thing but I'm wanting to extract textures from TF2 and keep a personal libary of them for reference. I have TF2 on steam but not sure what to do next? Heard about hammer tool but think that's just for previewing them? Any advise would be much appreciated.
how to extract textures from TF2?

You will need GCFScape (to extract the files) and the Photoshop VTF plugin to open the files. You can find these on google.

downloaded those but still not quite sure what to do? can't seem to locate anything tf2 on on gfc
-
The .gcf files are located in:
program files -> steam -> steamapps
Then for the materials you want:
team fortress 2 materials.gcf
Inside the .gcf:
tf -> materials

thanks, now having trouble opening it in photoshop. Have placed the .dll and .8bi into correct folders and reopened photoshop but can't find an VTF import option? tried opening a vtf but doesn't recognise file format.

I use Crafty, it does everything you need and more;
-
thanks but that doesn't seem to open up textures, only materials (which I couldn't locate anyway).
-
can now import them using vtf editor but can only export 1 at a time. Any workarounds?

the VTF format has changed between the old source engine format and the orangebox source engine format. That's why the photoshop VTF doesn't work for opening files anymore. Exporting back into the engine works fine due to source being downwards compatible. Try talking to wunderboy maybe about a Photoshop plugin for VTF (he created one for Max) http://www.wunderboy.org/.

Are you on Photoshop 64-bit? The plugin only works on PS 32-bit.
