Unreal engine 3 for consumers? WTF ?
-
-
holy shit if thats true !!!
first unity and now this !
if there is competition -> the consumer wins !

-
oh my god D:
-
I'm extremely skeptical of this.
Also if it is true, and everything we're hoping for, this so hurt homebrew engine making, and that's not exactly a popular pass-time to begin with. How are we going to get the next John Carmack or Tim Sweeney if everyone is using Unreal!? Somebody shed some light on this, how is this different than any other SDK?
-
I don't really see how its going to be any different than buying a copy of UT3? I would think anyone who wants it has it by now.

One of the biggest advantages might be current UE3 builds - Epic releases monthly code drops, but UT3 is still the newest game on the market. There's a ton of amazing features that it's highly unlikely will ever find their way to solo/small developers without 7 digits to shell out on licensing.
I'd say it's also very likely that such a release would come with much higher level code access than would be available in your typical mod development scenario.
Could be pretty amazing if true.

the unreal engine version we use at work completly blows the ut3-engine version out of the water
the new nav mesh pylon system is SOOO much better
and lightmass and the new staircaseless sunlight shadows are unbelievable !
also i think ut3s build lacks alot of sp focused actors.
so id defnitly love to see the unreal engine builds find their way into the hand of modders in much faster intervals than epic can crank out a ut-game !
-
a right. That's quite cool then. I have taken a big liking to source at the moment because UT3 is not really that fun to me so not much point mapping for it really, but I do want to do something in it again this year to keep up to date with it and not forget the ins and outs of it.
-
wow ! We use UE3 at school and I think our teachers will be gratefull if it's true

-
HOLY SHIT this looks like its for real O_O
none commercial license == for free
commercial per seat license == 2500
same as unity basicaly !
-
The 2500USd is only for non game applications.
If you make a game it is entirely free, but you pay 25% revenue share.
-
This is awesome!
-
loads of updates since the UT3 build. Going to try making something later.
-
This is so good news for the whole industry!
-
Gah!!! It's not fair, if only this had happened a few months ago I would have defintely used this or unity for my mod, now im stuck with the Source engine

Well, It's a lot more work, that's a fact, but you're still in time to make a transition. And who knows, make a good buck.
-
Clever attempt at retaining market share.
I hope this comes with the advanced features that aren't in the UT3 sdk.
-
I bet it does... UT3 was released 2 years ago. And this is supposedly a very early build.
