Well I used to trust a lot of publications and reviews and the dissapointment of the hypes they build up lead me to the conclusion that you can not trust any kind of gaming publication currently (apart from yatzee maybe). Gaming "journalism" is still way too dependend on the money they get for reviews and is still to under developed in terms of objectivity and real meassurements for what makes a good game. I'd even draw the conclusion that there's no real gaming journalism and that's why we get Fifa 8014, Battlefield 35 and Splinter Cell 13.

As Pericolos0 pointed out - it sucks when people get fired, sucks even more if it's not theyr fault but some big competitors' strike, but if these are good journalists and not your joe-avg-will-write-for-ad-contracts people they will have a new job in no time and the competition will help them form a better place.

One thing that makes Edge and games™ so good is that they have so many excellent articles about the industry, development, etc. As far as I'm aware 1UP was also known for interesting articles like this, as well as its podcast — not its reviews and news.

i agree on the general distrust of reviewers, it much too often seems like they're on different ground than me when reviewing a game. i trust metacritic to a point where a game isn't completely shit, but then, that's that. i can only put up a 2 point scaling system for games, and one is games that might be worth playing, and games that aren't worth playing. but even then, one has various reasons for wanting to play a game.

i like to compare games to music; there are those who like whatever the newest mainstream is and there are those who only like one genre and condemn the rest, etc.; everyone likes something different. when a reviewer reviews a game, it's based on his perception of said game, which again is based on his likes and dislikes; not mine or other peoples.

the best reviews in my opinion come from this thing people call a demo. where you can sit down and actually play a portion or segment of a game and see for yourself whether you'd like it or not.

Kind of sad to see how much of an influence EGM had on all these current press types:

It does sadden me to see another well-respected gaming magazine going down, because there're not many of them these days. I'm sure a lot of people don't read any, but some really are worthwhile even in this age of Internets (albeit for their articles and features, not news and reviews). Pretty much the only thing I read in the non-digital world!

Good news, everybody: Filefront is A-ok. That's all I really cared about out of the 1up network, and the only thing I've noticed changed is the screen it loads post-download.
