    Yeah, very sad day

1UP Yours and the 1UP Show have been the glue in my weekly podcast cycle, in fact something I'd look forward to the entire week. Without them, especially 1UP Yours, I don't know what to do. Fridays will never be the same

Which brings me to why UGO decided to do this. I mean, what the fuck, why buy the 1UP name and not the talent that goes with it. It's nothing, absolutely NOTHING without the people that worked there. And I'm sure UGO will soon realize that when the boards become a deserted and they get fewer and fewer hits. Hopefully the guys that got fired will join some other places or start their own stuff, definitely a suck way to start the new year tho.

    Fucking sad day

Bleh. What a good site to be hit by such horrors.

Maybe some of the staff will find their way to the superb GiantBomb. Seems to be a bit of a haven for former journalists on big sites, founded by GameSpot/Kane & Lynch controversy star Jeff Gerstmann.

Hehe yeah, I hope Giantbomb can take in some of them. It seems like they're running a pretty tight ship tho, being not more than 4-5 guys, doubt they'd hire more than one or two from 1UP/EGM :G

1UP Yours was always fun and 1UP itself always had great interviews and articles. Pretty sure all that's gonna stop immediately.

This is monumentally stupid in multiple ways, not the least of which because Ziff Davis's online services are the ONLY GODDAMN THINGS MAKING IT ANY MONEY AT ALL.

The article and thread has made me unable to write a response I’m not going to regret 5 minutes later.

have i been the only one who didn't check that site regular? didn't see too many links going there on mapcore either? i can see the "bad influence" stuff of a major label taking over a competitor but after all it's still only an online network about games - it's not like lehman collapsing or something like that?!

Anyway, it always sucks anyway when people get fired when a corporation takes over, but if they have any talent they'll land on their feet.

    basically

I was only going to say something about the Jeff Gerstmann controversy maybe superseding his work. I can't really comment on 1up/EGM except to say it's unfortunate when a lot of people lose their jobs beyond their control, and when thousands of gamers let out a shrill cry together you can get caught up in the moment. I rarely read game news or review myself; at best I pop on Gamersyde and The Magic Box once a week, and even then I ignore any text that's not a game title.

I didn't quite understand the tears shed over Gerstmann's firing either, but reviews aside, I think 1UP put out better content than any of the other big gaming publications. Interviews were interesting and in depth and the podcasts were a good round up of a weeks worth of news in one place with people that could actually carry 2 hours worth of conversation on the topic. I seldom had the stamina to keep up with GFW or 1UP Yours every week but I listened whenever I could and they were always fun.

It wasn't just the fact that he got fired which caused an outrage, it was the context and (suspected) motives behind the decision, which made the friendly, well-trusted facade of one of the most respected gaming publications crumble.

Right now it looks to me like UGO has acquired 1UP just to shut down a competitor, but this is merely speculation..maybe some more information leaks through from one of the fired editors.

Who likes video game reviews/reviewers anyway?

Is this a serious question? You don't have a particular publication or site that you like, trust, and frequently read? If not, you're a bit of a minority I think.

I think it's a ridiculous attitude to call people nerds and whatever because they're complaining that a very high-quality gaming publication is (probably) now toast. Maybe you're so indifferent to the games press you don't actually have any favourite sites and shit, but if you did I'm sure you'd be a bit annoyed too.

I personally didn't read 1UP as much as I read things like Edge and games™ (magazines), but I'd be very pissed off they were screwed up because of something like this as they're pretty much the only remaining great games magazines, constantly delivering great articles about gaming in general. I do know 1UP was very well respected for its quality, and I'm guessing those who're saying "Who cares?" very rarely actually visited it.

It's not hard to see why people are upset when things like this happen as reading magazines and such can constitute quite a bit of one's leisure time — like using your favourite forum, or playing your favourite online game.
