ON THE SUBJECT: Will I be able to fully enjoy this without playing the first game at all? It looks super nice, but is the story like, super much connected to that one?

I guess not, being like 20500 years between their releases, but it would still suck with super many references to the first one in the story making me all like

This game is supposed to be a prequel to the original, so there will probably be references to places/characters/events that oldschool fans will get, but won't detract from the DX newbies like us.

I got to play a bit last night, and overall, I'm finding the vision of this game to be really impressive. You have so many play style options - classic old school 3D shooter without ironsight aiming (albeit without the super speed in those games), cover-based Gears of War style shooting, Splinter Cell Conviction-style cover-based stealth, or old school Thief-style stealth, Metal Gear Solid AI behavior and body-hiding, the list goes on.

I'm starting to think that starting with the hardest difficulty was a mistake. Usually means that I get killed if I'm spotted when trying to move around - usually winding up dead from incoming fire before I can pop off a single shot. Thankfully, you can change the difficulty on the fly.

The cover system also feels a bit weird with the holding the jump button to turn corners, even concave ones (which should just be automatically navigated imo). It's also a bit odd (since I'm used to Gears and Mass Effect) to hold the movement keys/thumbstick to peak out of cover instead of holding the aim button, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Lastly, THANK YOU to whomever allowed the option to toggle going in and out of cover instead of forcing the awful Killzone 2 style of holding down a button to stay in cover. The array of personalization options really shows just how in depth these guys went to letting you play the game the way you want, down to how you move/interact with the environment at the hardware input level.

I also look forward to seeing just how consequential your actions are.

Piddling around inside the Sarif Industries building before heading to the plant got all the hostages killed, which completely caught me off guard.

Making of from the Augmented version DVD, will keep me entertained until I can play the game, so far phenomenally fun to watch!

Because it's one of the areas in the original, a very important one.

Having any sort of automatic cover transition from one surface to another probably would've ended up causing unwanted behavior somewhere in the game, where you accidentally expose yourself to an enemy's view instead of leaning out to shoot.

BTW, they have an adjustable FoV slider in the video options menu. I can't help but wonder if the endless threads about it on here had something to do with that.

Ahah, awesome. This won't mean anything to anyone who hasn't worked in Montreal, but the tshirt he's wearing is one for the local punk band Vandamn, which is partly made of one of the artists on Deus Ex (now back at Ubisoft) and my former LD tech director on prince of persia.

    11 hours in...

    just faced the first boss.

Playing it on the hardest difficulty with no load unless I die. Game is hard, sneaking around is very tense, but rewarding.

One thing I don't like is why in these games ALL emails and books are only text. I mean... the newspaper you find is cool because it has an interesting layout and has pictures, but the eBooks for example, I never read them, just interact and collect the "scholar" reward. Would it really be that troublesome to add a few images with subtitles, some graphs and schematics in these? Would have added a lot of value to an otherwise uneventful game mechanic (find blue eBook, interact, get reward, close).
