The engine's probably no good for consoles at the moment.

Exactly, even the PS3 can't handle the ammount of detail that goes on Crysis.

Anyways, here's some more info, source kotaku.

EA and Crytek invite PC gamers to go completely Psycho this fall in the newly announced Crysis Warhead, teased yesterday via CrysisTheGame.com. Developed with a focus on story and game performance, Warhead isn't so much a sequel as it is a parallel story, told from the point of view of Sergeant Sykes, codenamed Psycho, probably my favorite character from the first game. He'll have his hands full on the other side of the island while Nomad is doing his thing. New weapons and vehicles will be at his disposal, and the game will also feature new multiplayer content for those of you who enjoy killing each other.“We were very pleased with the reception of Crysis from both gamers and media after our launch last year,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “That being said, one of the key principles of our studio is to always raise the bar. With Warhead, we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis.”

The game is the first to be developed at Crytek's new Budapest Studio using an enhanced version of the CryENGINE 2 tech. Hit the jump for the full release!

The engine's probably no good for consoles at the moment. Their PC sales were pretty good supposedly though, so it makes sense to milk it a bit. I guess they'll announce a console-oriented project before long.

I remember reading an Interview with Chervalt Yerli in german developer magazine GameStar/dev about portability of the cryengine and he said it can be ported without any problems (and has been ported already iirc)

Yeah, like I said the problem isn't in the engine... It's the amount of stuff that Crysis has!

EA and Crytek Announce Development of Crysis Warhead The Next Installment of One of the Highest Rated Games of 2007 Blasts Its Way Onto PCs This Fall

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Maximum freedom, maximum explosions and maximum Psycho! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) and award-winning independent studio Crytek today announced Crysis Warhead® – the parallel story to Crysis, one of the most critically-acclaimed first person shooters and PC games of 2007. Shipping exclusively for the PC this fall, Crysis Warhead is the first title to be developed at Crytek’s Budapest studio, and is built on a new, enhanced and optimized version of Crytek’s CryENGINE® 2 technology.

“We were very pleased with the reception of Crysis from both gamers and media after our launch last year,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “That being said, one of the key principles of our studio is to always raise the bar. With Warhead, we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis.”

“The best result of a partnership that we can ask for in the EA Partners program is when a world class independent studio like Crytek chooses to continue to work with us,” said David DeMartini, Vice President and Global General Manager, EA Partners. “Crysis was an amazing game and is going to be a blockbuster franchise. We could not be more excited to be working with Crytek to launch another hit with Crysis Warhead this year.”

In Crysis Warhead, players will don the Nanosuit of Sergeant Sykes, also known as ‘Psycho’, one of the most memorable characters from Crysis. More brash and aggressive than his Delta Force squadmate Nomad, players will experience Psycho’s parallel story during the events of the original game, finding that life on the other side of the island is even more intense and explosive than they ever could have imagined. Luckily, Psycho’s Nanosuit is just as capable and he’s equipped with an even bigger arsenal of fully customizable weapons and new vehicles, giving players access to the tools they need to dominate any situation. Aside from this new, exciting single player campaign, Crysis Warhead will also feature new multiplayer content. Stay tuned for more details this summer.

Crysis Warhead has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI. For more information about the game, please visit http://www.crysisthegame.com.

There is little doubt the current gen consoles can run CryEngine2, they just have to lower the customers visuals expectations.... That and in terms of content, there's only so much you can load in the ram.

What the hell is going on at Crytek?First they announce that they're not developing exclusively to PC anymore due piracy and then drops Crysis patch support.

And now they're working on a PC EXCLUSIVE Crysis "expansion"...

    I don't understand.

    Read this.

Possible console ports of Crysis will almost certainly be cut up and downsized, just as the last gen console ports of Far Cry were.

I wonder if a modern console could run Far Cry as it was in the PC version... Maybe the 360 since it has 512 MB RAM.

    Source?

    French store Fnac.

A store its release date is never a trustfull source imho :)

They just have to slap some date on it, if they don't know a date they just take a guess :P

Will any extra measures be taken with Warhead in order to combat piracy?

While we are certainly very concerned about piracy and copy protection, we are also concerned about the potential opposite problem, that of inconveniencing legitimate buyers with newer measures that interfere too greatly with their enjoyment of the product. So we are carefully considering all possible options here, however we are not yet at a stage where we have made a final decision. Once we do make it, I very much doubt we would announce it publicly before Crysis Warhead releases.

Well if he isn't going to use steamworks free service to prevent 0-day piracy or maybe try a online sell before putting a retail out, he should not come complain again next time IMHO :P

Ofcourse I have no idea really how much EA has to say about it.

I have no doubt Cryengine 2 can run on consoles, I thought the engine was pretty scale-able based on some screens I've seen, it will just look less good, but what do you expect from inferior hardware anyway

I see they reused some of the stuff from the original crysis, and made new assets as well, good, good.
