The game just doesn't require me to use any interesting strategies to overcome my obstacles, no interesting puzzles in my way. No particularly interesting weapons. Only part I can remember making me use an interesting tactic would be the dead city part where you are getting swamped, there it payed off to use a turret.

Are you playing the game on normal difficulty? I would say Hard is a bare-bones minimum difficulty unless you're new to the whole shooting dudes with guns thing.

Agree with you completely on the lack of puzzles. Valve has had such a good track record with these, why would they drop the ball here???

i feel exactly the same sadly dunno if I'll play through all of it

How far in the campaign are you? Once you get to Dead City/Mutant Bash TV the game gets quite good. It is admittedly pretty flat up until that point. I think they had all their newly graduated level designers working on the early levels of the game and brought in the seasoned guys for the latter part.

Took about 15 hours to finish. The only thing I didn't do were the races in Subway Town. Just when the game really starts hitting its stride it's over rather abruptly. The final level was clearly something they quickly slapped together so they could ship the game. I wish they had time to wrap it up the way they intended.

Hopefully they'll do a DLC with the 2nd half of game content that didn't make it for release (kind of like FO3 did with Broken Steel).

Overall, I had a lot of fun with the game despite the poor vehicle controls and menu navigation. Would definitely buy a sequel when/if it comes out.

Good to see the quality of the level design starts to match up with the quality of the level art once you get to Dead City. Been having a blast now that I've gotten to eastern Wastelands.

    No Max support at all?

I imagine there will be Max support. I just know they use Modo at id.

All of your articles have been awesome, Simon. I wish we had someone doing an LD equivalent for Crysis 2.

You can also relight every single level in UT3, Gears of War PC, etc. etc. etc.

No need for custom maps to practice lighting. Just use the maps included with the games in this post and the above and you'll have plenty of options!

    Fucking consoles.

The more I drive around with the awful WASD controls for vehicles instead of the mouse look, the more I agree with Dux on this.

How am I supposed to turbo boost with the shift key and turn right with the A key at the same time?

Why can't I steer with the mouse when the game pad uses the right stick to look around on foot and steer in vehicles?

Also, I keep crashing when trying to return to a quest hub after finishing a side quest, even after deleting the config file that got rid of the texture pop-in insanity.

    Fucking consoles.

interestingly, these were also the launch codes for several russian ICBMs

We'll need D3 to confirm that for historical accuracy.

I wasn't trolling. I remember the first Max Payne being really slow-paced.

Never had a chance to play the second.

Bullet time is fast-paced? How do you get any slower-paced than that? Turn-based strategy?

    , I uninstalled it.

Boring story and world, really bad animations, lackluster environment art, minor game play improvements over Fallout 3, and just a general lack of the WOW factor that was present in FO3.

This is why I'm not a big fan of Obsidian. They take really good franchises like NWN, KOTOR, and now FO and produce a really mediocre title that mars the franchise for me.

It's a set up more similar to Borderlands.

You have an open world hub that you can explore that connects you to traditional linear levels and quest hub towns. The open world segment is really more for vehicular exploration and combat (or simply following the mini-map breadcrumb trail to your next main mission).

Each quest hub has a myriad of side missions that you can do, with mini-games, delivery quests, races of various sorts (time trials, combat races, etc.), and other side missions that take you back to the main mission levels and repopulates them with new enemies. The quest hubs also have shops that you can visit to sell junk and buy ammo/weapons/upgrades for yourself and your vehicle.

So while progression in the campaign is linear, as are the levels themselves for the main campaign, you have the freedom to either plow straight through it, or take the time to do all the side stuff, much like in a traditional RPG.

In summation, it's somewhere in between the linear corridor fest of past id games and the open world RPG of games like Oblivion/Fallout.

I'd say it's a lot of your traditional id FPS, some tactical RPG-esque elements of Bioshock with pickups along those lines, main campaign missions that are more linear like CoD or your traditional id FPS, but with some open areas for player choice via combat game play like Crysis 2, and some Twisted Metal thrown in for the vehicular segments.

Hmmm so does it work fine with Nvidia cards? I'm almost considering getting it for the 360 with all these issues :G

Yeah, it works fine with my Nvidia GTX 470. There is still a little texture pop-in after updating to the latest Nvidia beta driver, but nowhere as dramatic as before - I imagine that will be patched soon. Forcing V-sync on through the Nvidia control panel fixed the tearing issues. There are also a myriad of tweaks you can run via console or rageConfig.cfg to make everything even prettier.
