I tried a "Friend's Copy" out of curiosity, and I honestly don't really get too significant of texture pop-in. However, it also runs at like 15FPS, so I guess it has the luxury of taking its fucking time. I guess I'm not even going to consider buying this game until I'm on a new machine. Actually specced out one on Newegg for like $450.... which I still can't afford

    edit:

Game doesn't launch for me, just dumps an error log and quits. Going to update everything and see if that helps. The exclusive "make the game run" mini-game is the best part of PC gaming.

It also didn't run at first for me, but adding a bunch of launch options fixed it (not sure which):

    +vt_maxPPF 8 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +set com_allowConsole 1 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024 +ik_enablesmoothing 0 +m_smooth 0 +m_rawinput 1

Goddamn those are some fucked up symptoms. Don't let any medical drama writers get a hold of that blog link (they'll steal your story without credit, write the script yourself man)

Hmmm so does it work fine with Nvidia cards? I'm almost considering getting it for the 360 with all these issues :G

I've still seen some reporting bad texture pop-in but not as many as AMD users and none of the really major problems.

Lol the build info/date on the current version of Rage is dated less than 40 minutes before its unlock on Steam

I still haven't bought the game but I've spent most of my day following the news and posts about it. It's like a train wreck by someone I considered a god and really hoped would succeed.

As buggy as this "beta" is, it will be me through November.

    It ends in six days

It might have to do with the issues on PC. The game thinks it has no extra room for textures and is super aggressively culling everything.

The latest graphics card drivers for AMD, that were supposedly specifically released for Rage, are broken, because AMD's driver people are really super dumb apparently! They included super old and broken OpenGL files. Later today apparently they're going to rerelease the drivers properly.

People frapsing and saying that they see texture popping is so stupid since the textures are loaded from the same hardrive that they are trying to save a bmp to every frame. No wonder its slow. Its kind of like blaming low fps on the game you're playing while running 3dsmax, photoshop CS3, udk, unity, cryengine 3, 3 instances of visual studio and watching a replay of your favourite starcraft 2 match on youtube on your second monitor.

People are seeing the texture pop-in and then frapsing it to show it to other people brosef. Also what kind of scrub only has one hard drive?

It looks like, from what I've seen/heard, that the game isn't caching textures that are offscreen/behind the player/etc, and reloading that stuff every time the player turns around again instead of remembering them. Given that the texture pop-in is way less noticeable on Xbox judging by the giant bomb quicklook, that has to be some kind of bug. They only released the x86 version, so the game can only use 2GB, but still that's 4x what's available to an xbox game...

So I installed Origin to my game drive, which is separate from my windows drive, and separate from my storage drive (drives are cheap and plentiful). I just noticed that Battlefield 3, installed from Origin (running out of my game drive), was unbidden installed to Program Files(x86), on my windows drive. Good job EA/DICE. That is totally an appropriate call (hurr).

Speaking of appropriate calls, apparently EA has threatened to ban the EA accounts (which means removing your access to EA games you've already bought) of anyone who joins a "modded" server that has enabled higher player counts.

Man, this entire beta business has just been handled WONDERFULLY by everyone involved. I hope you're all patting yourselves on the back 24/7.

It's out now on Steam but I'm not paying $60 from a dev who's last title was doom 3 without experiencing it or someone trusted experiencing it first. Who's gonna review it here for us, eh?

  • What are you playing now?

This machine, built using materials and machinery from mods, converts glowstone dust into glowstone blocks using photosynthesis. The blocks are then divided, some converted back into more dust to refuel the machine, and the rest made into gold. This owns.

Anyone who makes a decision about the final product based on a beta is an utter moron.

The game comes out in three weeks I doubt much is going to happen in terms of intentional design, or having the battlelog replaced with an internal browser or something like that. My problems with BF3 aren't really balance or bug issues...

I'm down on the game a lot, but I do want to say that I like the changes to the cod rpg system, with unlocking weapon accessories by leveling them individually rather than everything being attached to your overall level/class level. The actual shooting feels good (just not the damage system). The game looks great, even on minimum (alas, my budget PC is finally showing its cheapass nature). I had fun tactically shooting rockets into the park and blowing up all the foliage to remove cover, while on defense, though I wish I had more than one grenade because the rpg's load times are balanced for shooting at tanks, not trees.

Just listened to the most recent RebelFM podcast, and I agree about their complaints about BF3's beta, especially how they reiterate what I said the other day in this thread about how you die. It's not even like it feels hard or I'm bad at the game, I have a .8 K/D ratio which isn't great but I'm mostly holding my own, it's just that almost every time you die, it doesn't feel like you had it coming. There's no warning and you almost never see who shot you or get to react. Almost all the time when I shoot other people they don't get a chance to turn and return fire either. I want to fight people, not just ambush them.

Wow, I've never 'met' anyone as grumpy as you. Seriously dude, lighten up you emo!

The Operation Metro really isn't the best choice by a long shot, but Caspian Border is amazing and feels so much more like BF.

Don't be so narrow minded Dux.

Except most of us haven't gotten to play Caspian Border. The beta, playing in Metro, has also convinced me not to buy the game when it comes out.

So is the editor attached with the game as promised?Last time it was mentioned: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/05/rage- ... id-studio/

No, at least I'm pretty sure this was said during carmack's keynote. The editor's 64-bit only, and the 64-bit version of Rage is getting the Crysis 2 DX11 patch treatment apparently.

I joined what looked like a low ping server in the server browser, and ended up having the absolute worst experience playing this game yet. Some of it was due to perceived lag, and some of it was just me becoming aware of more issues with the beta. Multiple times I was attempting to run or jump over debris on the floor, getting stuck, rubberbanding on top of it, and then suddenly dying from getting shot by somebody. "Suddenly dying" in general describes every death. Pretty much every single one is jarring. No time to see the bullet warning indicators or the blur, just suddenly the camera's popping up to full standing height so it can play the fall down and reach out animation. This feels really bad and is really frustrating. The only time any death felt fair was when by chance me and an enemy ended up face to face, so I could actually see who was shooting me. This also happened sometimes in Bad Company 2 in close encounters, the difference is in Bad Company 2 the maps were way, way more spread out than Metro and firefights tended to happen at 100 yards or better, where high damage weapons made more sense due to the inaccuracy at those ranges. You land a hell of a lot more shots on target in a map like Metro though.

Also the paddles require a weird accuracy now. Almost every time I revive a teammate I have to shock twice to actually "connect" with their ragdoll and get them back up.
