Probably the best TV spot I've ever seen. If there ever was a case where I didn't want this game before, I'd be buying it in a heartbeat.

    EDIT: Added HD version

Don't really appreciate him as a youtuber but it's still sad to see it happening. I'm of the same opinion as HP, people have lived past expectancies and I'm certain that if he has the will there is a way. There's actually a good TED talk that talks about how you can kill cancer by starving it to death, by way of angiogenesis. I'll post the link when able. Not because I think he'll see it, but because it could happen to any of us.

Besides that, isn't the title a bit clickbaity and misleading? Technically we're all dying...

  • Need to find a new vein of motivation for personal projects.

    • Sentura
    • February 2, 2016 at 2:12 PM

I have a lot of drive most of the time, but it all depends on different factors. Some days I have no drive whatsoever, and those days I just can't do personal projects. On the other hand, most days I feel inspired to work and spend a lot of time thinking about side projects etc. I think the most important thing in understanding what motivates you is what removes the motivation you started out with.

For me, that's when I face problems (in e.g. a side project) that are overwhelming at first. Sometimes the problem isn't consciously presenting itself, for me it's often something that just feels "off", as if it was in the uncanny valley. So I stop working on the affected project for a bit - sometimes an hour, sometimes a few days. That doesn't mean I stop what I am doing, it just means I'm putting the actual work aside as I'm attempting to figure out the problem. This works for me because I don't like having unsolved problems in my head, so I almost automatically attempt to look for solutions whenever possible.

The process I use to figure out is just trying to isolate the problem by looking at it from different angles, see if I can assess it differently. I ask peers about the problem, see what their insight is. If I can't figure it out, I'll look at references to see if I can glean from them. It's pretty basic stuff, but eventually after either seeing a tv series or a let's play or playing a level in a game or some such, my mind will suddenly make the connection to the problem and I'll get inspired/motivated again. Once the first bit of motivation is there it's much easier, since every successful step just makes the motivation greater.

So in summary: If you're motivated - get shit done, do small things first, then move onto greater things once you have enough motivation. If something is overwhelming, back away and think about what you're trying to do or use references to figure out the problem. Pretty basic, works for me, might not work for everyone.

At least he was being nice about it, seems like he's had a change of attitude since he released Braid.

And just to point this out, piracy numbers aren't equal to lost sales numbers. A person pirating something wasn't necessarily going to buy said something if they weren't able to anyway.

Just a FYI in case anyone is wondering, apparently Steam is having some caching issues. Don't use the steam store or community right now. Check the SteamDB twitter for more info.

Don't get me wrong, you would still be able to move the mouse anywhere - but it would just be charging while on the mousepad. It's really just a replacement for a charger as it were.

I got like a few indie games I wanted to check out, I think I'll also pick up Sir You Are Being Hunted because it kind of sounds interesting, though the playthrough I've seen some of the gameplay and UI threw me off

I bought my mother a book on the biology of emotions, so I'll tell you guys if it is interesting or not, even though you might want to borrow it since it costs a lot of money for a book

@Sentura did you take any interest about how the brain processes sensorial stimuli?

Yes! In my work I looked at emotions as energy states (i.e. intense vs weak emotions) and how visual perception affected these. The way the brain processes visual stimuli is especially interesting because we have tools like Bayesian Logic of perception, 8 Laws of Ramachandran and Gestalt Laws that allows the research to have practical applications too. Between those and having knowledge about the path of least resistance, one can create an open environment where the players still follow a fairly linear path, for instance.

There's a lot of stuff to draw on, it depends on what exactly you're looking for. I would suggest looking for scientific articles or borrow books at a university library. I did my Masters covering emotions and psychology associated with visual tokens/assets (neuroaesthetics) to create atmospheres - I could potentially give you references there. There's also a whole bunch on lighting. For specific design stuff I think you need to clarify the context you want to use this stuff in.

Just finished Alien: Isolation. Great atmosphere and some interesting progression for the first 10 missions, but I couldn't help but feel it was somewhat lacking in the level design department. Too much backtracking, and definitely too many worst case scenarios happening at the same time. Of course the ladder you're going to grab is going to break, of course the elevator is going to stop, of course you're going to fall down a hatch right before you fucking finish an objective. Stuff like this just made the game a cliche that broke the immersion. It removed the element of horror and fear and replaced it with frustration because you have to yet again go through numerous hoops just to get to a point you already were at. Then there's also the improbability of stuff like Xenomorphs surviving the vaccuum of space and the ending being so anticlimactic it felt like all the things you've built up during the latter part of the game just falling apart. Still, Sevastopol was interesting place to explore, the deserted look of the station and the different people trying to survive was a super cool aspect, and I wish they would have explored that avenue more in terms of gameplay.

Well for a table it's not possible, obviously it depends of the size of the table but doing it out of a single piece of wood is a bad idea, it would not be stable/solid at all, same thing for a chair, also depends of the design... Can't speak about a price tag which can vary a lot.

If you have some pictures of what you mean it could help, but for a typical chair/table, defo not possible and not a good idea at all.

Definitely not thinking of it as a conventional table. I was thinking more of furniture that looks like this: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NjQwWDg1Mg==/z/e3oAAOSwPhdU~zZy/$_1.JPG

    Super badass stuff mang

Just out of curiosity, how hard/expensive is it to make furniture out of just one piece of wood? I'm thinking in particular of tables and chairs.
