I'm sorry guys, I think I'm just tainted by the fact that it's made by Turtle Rock and that its design is pretty much what L4D3 would have been had it made the cut. But they're making money, so good on them! I'm sure it'll turn out great for people who like those kinds of games!

Turtle Rock has never made anything worthwhile, and they seem to continue on that path with this game.

Lynch's works are subtle, don't know why you are expecting to understand them just by judging their face value. The cowboy scene is still one my favorites.

Actually I just wish I could buy a share of or invest in a person rather than a business. I'd invest so I would get 51% of the shares of Carmack, and then maybe some of Peris...

I want to do something about this, I signed all the petitions and that stuff - but what else can I do? Anyone got ideas? I feel helpless and angry about this.

You can start thinking like them, and then acting accordingly. Signing petitions won't do anything, I'm sure.

People are too complacent to do anything about it. Even if we're all against it, there's still another 99.9% of the population that don't care. Changes against this need to happen through more clandestine ways rather than just oppose it from the outside. I get that corporations want money, and that a net loss of money would get them to change their minds - however, losing you as a customer, or even losing 10,000 customers might not be a net loss for them if their strategy works so they get a return on investment elsewhere that is larger.

Between us and the corporations, we're not all that much in a different situation. They are trying to impose sanctions and restriction on a huge amount of the populace by playing it smart, and working below the radar. Why should we not employ the same tactics to nullify their actions? Alternatively, create a new, better, more sustainable internet that will force everyone to switch over. I also like the idea of having a global ISP market, however unlikely it will turn out as something good.

  • What is a good, or a bad video game ?

    On fun:

I think the differences between good and bad games exist on a few different axes. My personal axes would most likely be something like fun or not fun (see above video), narratively/environmentally engaging or not engaging and player freedom, guidance and consequence. That being said, I would never just cold give a game a score based on how well it performed in these areas. I firmly believe that most game experiences are holistic, and it would take away the immersion/suspension of disbelief/holism trying to deconstruct or judge a game like this while playing it. Besides that, there will always be tacit values that we as players will pick up on in a game, but not have a chance to understand in an analytical sense.

I disagree with many of the purported theories on engagement that are out there, because they don't strongly distinguish holistic games from non-holistic games (casual games would be a good example of these) and attempt to apply one theory or one type of understanding as an umbrella for everything game related. It also takes a deep tacit understanding of games that can currently only be achieved through years of experience playing said games to even begin to decipher what makes games engaging - and most game scholars just haven't that kind of experience as they come from different fields.

I get associations back to how ancient martial art masters trained their students with learning by doing. Just imitating the move would not grant them the technique, they would have to practice it until they fine tuned the technique to their own body before being able to master it. It's not a far stretch that there needs to be the same understanding for the study of games. Because right, as a certain fungineer put it when faced with people trying to analyse games for their inner workings, "It's like dissecting a clown to see why he's funny".

The environments are great, I gotta say, but that's all it has for it. All I see is a dumbing down of Deadly Shadows which was already a dumbing down of the earlier titles.

Could you find the time to do all those things? Especially books.

I was thinking the same. I think I'll pass, I have plenty of stuff to do

No matter what I think you have to always remember what your driving force is, in whatever work you do. I chose to do level design, but I would probably also have had a strong drive for other things, such as quantum physics or maybe even teaching (or all of these combined). Passion, as much as it is a rationalization for wanting pussy (thanks Dejavo), is also fairly abstract and the more you look, the more you'll find that there are things you really enjoy doing.

Either way, I don't plan to retire early for two reasons:

The first one is that I won't see myself as old at 65 or whenever. I'm not saying there won't be a day where you are too tired or weak to work, but I don't think that will happen at 65... or 75 for that matter. The matter of perspective becomes important - because when you see yourself as weak and frail you will act weak and frail. I don't intend to lose much steam by the age of 65 or 75, I just plan to keep going as much as I can. More than anything, retirement just seems like an excuse to stop and wait for death to come. I'd rather march on and meet death head first.

The second reason is simple: If I stopped doing anything I would literally bore myself to death. I don't think most people can do idleness, and I would personally and most likely wind up doing the exact same things during my retirement as I would otherwise. If I truly become too tired and weak to do anything at any point in time I might as well not be alive, because it wouldn't be a life worth living.

Seriously, don't stress out Kokoz, there are things you can't change anyway and you just gotta learn to accept that. When you do, you don't get that much stressed anymore. This is not a carte blanche for giving up in that sense, because you can still push yourself hard enough-- BUT it helps to alleviate the stress.

About getting old/money/everything, my plan is definitely to invest in some way, most likely something fairly stable in the beginning but once I get a little bit in I'd like to get into investments more. I like the idea of maxing out a 401k before beginning investments, that sounds like a pretty well guarded move. But honestly I don't believe it's going to be as hopeless or grim as people put it here. It's the future, it's not like we're going to go back to living in industrial age conditions or on the streets. Play smart, or if you can't play it smart, play it safe.and it'll be fine.

Also I will lol so hard if WW3 hits and we all die while we're all busy working our asses off for the future.

Also real estate is fairly vulnerable to bubbles (which happen every so and so years) as well as gentrification
