  • Company leaks game on purpose for pirating

"We know anecdotally that even at 59p a lot of people have pirated the game," he said. "At 59p it's pretty fair to assume that a lot of those pirates would have been able and would have bought the game, but there's an overall attitude that it's fine to pirate."

just to respond to this: it's not really a question whether to pirate or not if a game comes out at a low price. price is a static barrier, and it would be the same whether you had a weighted price or a very low price; the barrier stays the same. the extra bother of going through credit cards or similar just to get access to a game is something that people don't want to bother with. i reckon in the future, the essence of distributing a piece of media will have to be so simplified that people won't have to bother with various payment options, but rather have a "one-click" button for everything. or, put differently, there is a blindside to impulse shopping online.

If you look at the Uniengine demo, the Dragon's spines curve as they grow out of his chest. How does that work with a 2d map?

it's a displacement map combined with a normal, so the pixel displaced gets moved along a normal as well, allowing really weird shapes =)

watching the video, i noticed there was a drawback to this method: if done incorrectly, it will look as if the given tiles are moving. i noticed it as the camera went over the brick road.

For some reason whenever I think about the image, I think it'd stand out with a ice blue sky in the background (Instead of the orange), which would really make the fire pop.... Maybe something to try, will probably look like bleh though.

    Edit:

    Nevermind this looks like crap.

Terribly sorry to use Imageshack but I can't get anything else to load here right now.

Though it might look better if it wasn't photoshop + hue/sat adjustment and the eraser tool.

it doesn't convey the same narrative as robert wrote in his first post. saving the world from darkness and seeing the rising sun has much more symbolism than a clean night sky.

    Same here!

It's pretty much my personal place, where I post the stuff I worked on my free time.

it isn't as much a blog as it is a portfolio then? i honestly think i'm too lazy to have a blog. or don't care enough. or both. i much prefer writing a document to larger projects documenting reflections, analysis, thoughts etc.

it's too bad there's no security and full public access. we used it briefly for our current project, but went back to assembla.com and svn because it's much better for collaboration. we're also waiting for google wave invites to arrive so we can test this out as a collaborative tool.

While Thrik is 100% right about popularity of blogs being strongly related to community participation and 'celebrity' factory, you should bear in mind that blogging isn't all about popularity! For me, blogging has been a very effective tool for rationalising and better understanding the subject matter of each post. In particular, it's often the case that we just 'know' why something works or does not work. When you write a blog post about the topic, you must understand the topic before you can explain it to someone else. On quite a few occasions, I've had "aha!" moments while typing a post . My job up til now has involved convincing software engineers to change the way they write their code, so being able to put forward a convincing argument was extremely important to me, and blogging definitely made a difference. I would thoroughly recommend blogging as a way to better understand your chosen field.

out of curiousity, which code changes are we speaking here? anything you could disclose?

i disagree, schindler's list may very well be entertaining. not in the traditional sense mind you, but it keeps you seated all the way through - like any good piece of media should. i am perfectly sure you can make entertaining or even 'fun' games while keeping the constraint of teaching people understanding (such as showing people what is going on in the world etc.). they aren't mutually exclusive.

You could have a button in EoT that quoted the user in question and replies with the word "cocks" and an irrelevant 1900x1200 image macro from the totally underground 4chan, possibly repeated to the image limit. I demand efficiency, Thrik.

this has got to be the best idea ever!

that's the thing really, the game isn't about the combat as much as it is about the rpg part really. i loved the ability to modify your weaponry and based on how much ammo you had, you would choose when to wage battle against big daddies. i can understand this is too much of a challenge for people who love killzone et all...

i never understood what people saw in halo or resistance or gears of war... at least bioshock's immersion factor is higher than those games..

i disagree. I think they portray a war pretty good in those games... which is the whole point of its immersion factor. I found those types of fps's way more immersing. Im not a huuuge fan of corridor horror shooters tho \:

i never really noticed the horror in bioshock. sure i got startled once, but it's nothing like the brooding terror of s.t.a.l.k.e.r at all.

First off, I think its a little funny that you made a thread about dividing and arranging threads so that things dont get mixed, then you post a mixed thread ;DAs I've said to you on MSN, the only thing left for you to do now is to take out your hdd and put it into another computer and boot the windows to see if the problems still exists there. If it doesn't, then your motherboard is most likely screwed, but if it does then I'd try to back up the data and just format.

i know that my motherboard isn't screwed; i know that it is the windows installation. i just want to see if it's possible to fix this without having to format. otherwise i'll have to go through gettingit out and getting it onto another computer for backup, then formatting...

yo guys, i have two things in this topic i'd like to discuss.

the first one is the forum etiquette of the gaming discussion forum. would it be possible instead of having random names for game threads to just make game threads with the name of the game? i'm really tired of looking through the posts only to find the post somewhere with something such as 'teaser' put onto the end of it. it's the same with extra screenshots or trailers or other preliminary hype spreading devices. it would be awesome if every game had its own thread and people just kept adding to the end of that thread.

secondly, i have a hardware problem...

recently i tried to install some beta drivers for making the ps3 controller function within the realm of my PC. this didn't work for some reason, and i decided to uninstall the drivers. unfortunately, the drivers took the windows USB I/O drivers with them as well, which means that neither mouse nor keyboard work in windows, and as a result, i can't use my stationary PC. so far i've looked for help on google, i've tried PS2 input, i've tried windows repair from the windows disc (keyboard works outside of windows) as well as windows reinstall (which wouldn't work without reformatting) - neither which have helped me. now i'm imploring you, mapcore, to tell me if there is a way to regain the drivers or otherwise make the computer accessible without having to take out the hdd over to another computer to back it up before reinstalling windows. i run XP still, in case anyone is wondering.
