It's still going on, the drug dealer army (quite literary) took refuge on an allied slum.I'm not sure what is going to happen now, if the police will keep the pressure on and hunt them down we could be facing a severe civilian casualty rate as it's very hard tofight in the slums.

isn't it also, quite literally, an uphill battle?

well i was thinking of stalker when i mentioned open world. the problem with games like fallout and gta are that you start with very few unknown variables, or very quickly get to see everything worth seeing. that doesn't necessarily mean they don't have good sides, but it is harder to be interested in something when it doesn't have that "new toy smell" (as in, new experience). there are still some places in fallout 3 and new vegas that are interesting though, especially when going out to the fringes of the map, and i even remember vice city had some remote islands or something that could only be reached by excessive trick jumping.

the point i'm trying to make here is that since you have such a large underground network, it's sort of sad not getting to see every key point, to get the full view of how people are living below ground, or what unknown destinations there are beyond human settlements. in metro 2033, i remember that pretty much each area you went through in the beginning was very distinct, and it had a lot of unknown variables, and i immediately drew a parallel to the entire stalker map. stalker worked for me because your fear motivated you to stay away from certain areas until you got certain weapons or armor; as opposed to fallout or gta, where everything is open all the time pretty much. if the developers of metro 2034 played their cards right, it would be easy to reproduce that effect in their game, and it would be an experience that would be cherished much more than simply walking the predetermined path made out in metro 2033.

i don't see why you brought metal gear into the discussion? sure it uses narrative, but the narrative does in no way bulldoze over the gameplay at any point (even though there may be excessive amounts of it).

i think it's hard for westerners in general to picture what is actually going on behind the eastern block, so i wouldn't be surprised if they associate it with stalker (which, in my mind, is also a good thing). i just think it's a shame to not use the metro network to its full potential. i'd love to go off in either of the extreme points and look for what might have been; exploring could be such an integral part of the game... which is why i think it's a shame it needs to be so linear.

making something unique just for it to be unique isn't really the best solution, especially not when better solutions (granted, that might be more costly), are presented.

There's a book called Metro 2034 you know, it's not about some guy who walks around the ruins of the city Fallout style...

modeling a game 1:1 after a book isn't even remotely possible. why should the gameplay suffer under the guise of narrative importance?

Makes me wonder if 4agames will even bother to enhance their engine for Metro 2034, there's not a lot more they can do to make that look any better either!

they could make it open world

Was finally playing through to the end of Metro 2033. Then hit Chapter 5 with no gas masks and couldn't go back to get more without having to repeat a good 4-5 levels.

yeah they should have made a backtracking system so you could at least get them filters. i guess i was lucky to get through the game first time around with the filters i scavenged. but then again i took the whole game as a taste of what is to come (it sort of felt like a tour de metro)
