to be honest, we could make anything happen. i bet people here wouldn't mind drawing up a concept for a logo for mapcore, or make designs for a couple of different shirts. then some admin type would just have to speak to cafepress or one of those other t shirt making companies about making it happen.

    so... competition time, anyone?

formal request for this thread to be moved to the classics when it has run its course great post rick. I like Sentura's rantings. they always contain little nuggets of truth, even if they're blown way out of proportion sometimes

amazing, i always thought people unanimously thought i was bullshitting.

I'm starting to wonder if this is coming to Steam, still no preorder.

i think it's too early for that, i wouldn't worry. new vegas is still on steam so preorders are probably coming in august.

i see characters are still wearing the creepy bethesda face...

but yeah, still looking pretty good. i especially like the dragon shout whatevers

huge cogs and sea men is the way to go!

actually i liked the tilde design from years back, i think it was hessi's work? the cube/cog idea would be pretty cool as well. so many possibilities, how does mapcore want to represent itself?

i think i'd enjoy just scavenging for supplies and crafting new weapons more than anything else in that game. the combat looks... very tiring, and i think it'll get old extremely fast. but hey, nice looking and all.

fair point, i was hoping people with stop hyping so much over a game when they haven't seen anything but the art from it, but i guess i am at fault for not having learned anything from the dead island discussion.

the game might be good when it comes out, but there's no way of telling now. also, fuck jenova chen.

serenius, i do know how business works. i've done a small share of real life business cases and feasibility reports that justified new investments and technology. i also know how to target a demographic group of people, how important things like cover design and text is, and i've seen a fair share of game sales from the other side of the counter. please don't take me for an idiot just because everyone else around here does.

for our concrete example i am pretty sure it isn't marketed towards your average joe, so i'm not sure why you'd use that as strawman.

also, using words like unique and original gives nothing out to the consumer about what kind of product it is.

Not sure what passage you are pointing me to there. This one?

even if it was created by someone else, i'm sure it had to be greenlighted somewhere higher to be put out.

    I don't even care anymore...

yes, that one. as in, it's still marketing/showcasing even if someone else does it for them.

So you're against gaming journalists then? I might be mistaken, but even on the example at hand, I believe the video was captured by Stephen Totillo of Kotaku - not the developers.

Dude I'm glad I don't have such a shitty way to look at games as you do.

I wonder what you thought about shadow of the colossus.. a pretentious zelda with only bossfights? fucking hipsters...

how about Rez, a shitty 90ies style on-rails shooter?

minecraft.. just blockwars but with less shapes to play with and indie pixel graphics.. ugh notch is such a hipster faggot

literally every game takes core mechanics from somethign else. every game is an iteration on something else. literally every art form ever does this ever!!!

i am very aware of this and i'm also at peace with it. there's a lot of games that have improved good concepts, and this is nothing if not good progress. i have also seen indie games do good with improvement of concepts, and i commend them for it. what i'm against is the people marketing/selling/showcasing it as unique and original.

But I think you should watch this. You'll really like it:http://tale-of-tales.com/tales/OverGames.html

no, not really. even if their statement holds some merit, their games are of the same caliber as flow or flower or journey, and i can't say i have enjoyed them nor been immersed into their worlds. and i think the same thing would happen in games from thatgamecompany. but contrary to thatgamecompany, these guys at least tell it like it is, which is what i would expect from any decent person.

    Quote

that comparison is such a stretch. how are these games anything alike gameplay-wise? does the tail in flower affect the gameplay in any way? (unlike snake)

true, but it's still very comparable to snake, even if it doesn't bring on the difficulty of it.

Flower was nothing like Snake... it was just an exploration/collection game driven forward by cinematic weirdness. Closer to an adventure game than anything else in that respect. To be honest I'm like Frie in that I'm only very loosely grasping the point being argued in this thread. Is it that game designers — who typically always think their work is the best thing since sliced bread and will usually be a little generous when describing it — shouldn't try to excite people about their work? Or is that they should forget the theatrics and just release gameplay trailers which can do the talking (which is incidentally what thatgamecompany does)?

You're right that there's a lack of entirely fresh ideas in the industry, but then the games industry is quite similar to the music and film industries in that respect: it's primarily driven by trends and iteration, and while any one segment of 3–5 years might seem very lacking in innovation, if you actually compare segments of 5–10 years you'll find they're very distinct.

There's no problem with the industry's evolution IMO, in fact gameplay is getting more varied than ever with the advent of motion detection and other peripherals. All TGC is trying to do is get people to try weird concepts they wouldn't ordinarily touch by making them sound cool and look all artsy fartsy.

you... go around flowers, collecting petals. with each petal, the size of your entity (wind of petals or whatever it is) increases with more petals. this is exactly the same thing that happens in snake; you "eat" "food" and get a larger tail. that they added exploration and other such features has no effect on the core gameplay, even if it does have an effect on the player experience.

and the trailer they released showed nothing. it was supposed to be multiplayer, but there was only one person? the goal was to, what, collect banners to proceed to the next area? this is supposed to be original? THIS, of all things, deserves praise? i understand that jenova chen has some rigid beliefs that he should create game experiences with emotional or social relevance, but seeing how little effort he actually puts into the gameplay, it could just as well be short films or animated .gifs or a gallery of images that he did. yet he acts like he's a great designer and that other designers in the games industry should follow his wisdom, and everyone praises him for it.

ill sum up my gripe here (since it is apparently hard to understand): studio makes a game and claims it is original. studio releases trailer about game that show next to no gameplay, and the small part of gameplay that the trailer shows isn't original. yet the trailer receives high praise and the game gets hyped.

people here are probably gonna hate me for it, but i hope the team bondi studio closes; if only to teach mcnamara a lesson about management. i think what the article said about rockstar saving the game sounds about right, and i'd rather have the people who worked at team bondi transferred to rockstar than i want mcnamara to continue bad habits.
