Looks quite interesting. Has wonderful art direction, and the gameplay concept sounds novel if perhaps a little limited in how far it can go — but then that applies to most indie games. I can't help but want to see the next Zelda game use such a style rather than the uninspiring approach Nintendo's gone for.

    That would be awesome.

oh boy. not only does he not come with something original, but he chastises other people for doing the same? flower isn't just 3d snake, it's new and original and fascinating. this is what pisses me off, he comes off as a hipster trying to introduce something we've all seen before in a new package, and it's sooooooo original. not to mention hypocritical and pretentious.

Well, he's talking about Journey. I was comparing fl0w to snake to demonstrate how he could market/PR it badly.

But I think you should watch this. You'll really like it:

then i'm getting trolled. how ironic for once.

Dude I'm glad I don't have such a shitty way to look at games as you do.

I wonder what you thought about shadow of the colossus.. a pretentious zelda with only bossfights? fucking hipsters...

how about Rez, a shitty 90ies style on-rails shooter?

minecraft.. just blockwars but with less shapes to play with and indie pixel graphics.. ugh notch is such a hipster faggot

literally every game takes core mechanics from somethign else. every game is an iteration on something else. literally every art form ever does this ever!!!

i am very aware of this and i'm also at peace with it. there's a lot of games that have improved good concepts, and this is nothing if not good progress. i have also seen indie games do good with improvement of concepts, and i commend them for it. what i'm against is the people marketing/selling/showcasing it as unique and original.

no, not really. even if their statement holds some merit, their games are of the same caliber as flow or flower or journey, and i can't say i have enjoyed them nor been immersed into their worlds. and i think the same thing would happen in games from thatgamecompany. but contrary to thatgamecompany, these guys at least tell it like it is, which is what i would expect from any decent person.

    Quote

that comparison is such a stretch. how are these games anything alike gameplay-wise? does the tail in flower affect the gameplay in any way? (unlike snake)

true, but it's still very comparable to snake, even if it doesn't bring on the difficulty of it.

So you're against gaming journalists then? I might be mistaken, but even on the example at hand, I believe the video was captured by Stephen Totillo of Kotaku - not the developers.

yes, that one. as in, it's still marketing/showcasing even if someone else does it for them.

Obviously you've never had to sell a product. Sadly, we don't live in a world where your work speaks for itself and will bring in mad bank on its own through word of mouth. Not on the level necessary to make financial budgets and stay in business. This isn't limited to the games industry either. The next great hairspray has to be the latest and greatest thing to convince someone to part with their money for it.

Think about it from a customer perspective (not someone who's into games, just your average idiot). You're shopping for games, you don't tirelessly research everything you buy, you're just looking for something to play. At a store you're faced with a deluge of titles, all with fancy box art and copy designed to grab your attention.

To purchase this, you're asked to part with not $5, not $10, but $40-$60 for this shiny new game that catches your eye. This is a lot of money that could be potentially wasted if you've been burned in the past (and most likely you have). It's obviously a new product, so you have no experience with the original title(s) in the series, so there's no security in your purchase going in blind. Might as well pass on the new game that could be a waste of your hard-earned money (almost a full days' of work if you're paid $10/hr) and pick up another Call of Duty game instead.

On the other hand, if the company making the product had a good marketing team, you think you know what you're getting. This new IP is different from the rest, but their marketing team has convinced you that this is THE game to spend your money on this release period. It's getting mad praise from everyone on the internet, so you obviously can't live without it, and must go out on day 1 and buy a copy and experience this masterpiece for yourself!

Unfortunately, the Sentura Marketing Co. was responsible for this game's campaign, and they told you it was just like Snake that you played on the Atari 2 decades ago but has a slight twist to it that makes it really fun! You're already discounting it because as the customer, in your mind, you've already seen what this game has to offer and the new twist on an old favorite probably isn't worth buying over the new CODBLOPs map pack.

So you can live without it and go on with your life without buying it.

So do 499,999 other people. The lack of meeting sales goals means the studio shuts down, everyone loses their job, the head guy has a massive black mark on his reputation and potentially his personal credit rating, all because they didn't try to build enough hype on their iterative version of Snake.

Their game was fun! It did everything right! It really was the next latest and greatest thing on the gaming scene. Unfortunately, no one believed them because their marketing team tried to manage expectations.

Over the top claims = hype. Hype = sales. Sales = staying in business. Meeting the hype = become a legend in your industry. I can't help but wonder how much time you've spent in the real world if you don't understand this. No, college (university, or whatever you call it) isn't the real world.

serenius, i do know how business works. i've done a small share of real life business cases and feasibility reports that justified new investments and technology. i also know how to target a demographic group of people, how important things like cover design and text is, and i've seen a fair share of game sales from the other side of the counter. please don't take me for an idiot just because everyone else around here does.

for our concrete example i am pretty sure it isn't marketed towards your average joe, so i'm not sure why you'd use that as strawman.

also, using words like unique and original gives nothing out to the consumer about what kind of product it is.

god sentura, don't get me wrong, i think you are a decent guy and i have nothing against you personally so don't take this the wrong way.

but you have such a talent for spouting the most bitter and negative diseased shit at any given opportunity.

you don't have a point at all. some indie developers are making a game that isn't another BLOPS or brownanblooman shooter and people are excited by it because it's something a little bit interesting that people can enjoy. a fresh coat of paint on something that is vaguely familiar that perhaps harkens abck to the days when they would play 3d platformers on the PS1 with their friends, and you want to come and shit all over that because people have some positive things to say about it.

if you don't like it then say it. but to go on this tirade of cancerous abuse whilst doing seemingly nothing to offer any solution, or to offer any ideas that you think would improve this industry that you apparently hate so much is just too much.

it's fun to have you around as a kind of bitter ogre we can wheel out when it's a slow news day is good fun, but you either need to crack your heart of stone or we need to get a larger platform for your opinions because i think you could piss off a lot more people and we could have a lot more fun watching it.

fair point, i was hoping people with stop hyping so much over a game when they haven't seen anything but the art from it, but i guess i am at fault for not having learned anything from the dead island discussion.

the game might be good when it comes out, but there's no way of telling now. also, fuck jenova chen.

great post rick. I like Sentura's rantings. they always contain little nuggets of truth, even if they're blown way out of proportion sometimes
