i get pissed off most of the time when i see badly written articles, especially in the field of game design. i don't understand how people can excuse themselves for being verbose and obtrusive when the goal of their article is communicating a message. what's worse, people don't seem to be bothered by this and some even begin to glorify it. i'm thinking this will pass as the field will mature, but right now it doesn't make me less want to punch some writers in the face for the utter glorified nonsense they spout.

i quite honestly want people from the industry, people with experience of doing things, to write how they do things, like the production structure, the design iteration and everything that comes in between. i want them to identify what games mean to them and how they figure out what they mean to people. who are these people who think they can talk about games without actually playing them, or without any real design or studio experience?

Get 'Design of everyday things' while your at it.Not focusing on games, but the relationship between design and end user.

And it's a good read anyways.

yeah, i can recommend this. also when it comes to stuff like non game design but still tangential to these things: blink by malcolm gladwell

most of what has been written about game design is very much from academic point of view, and as such i CANNOT recommend much. i think the closest thing you have to something like reading up on it would be the MDA framework (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MDA_framework); however take into account that even this is a product of subjective value judgments and not in any way something objective.

there are also of course specific branches of game design you could be interested in, such as game balance (e.g. competitive games), where you can find some amount of articles about the balancing part itself, but also related things such as spectator values and what makes a sport a sport.

if you really want to get into the academic stuff out there (there is A LOT of bullshit), don't hesitate to use google scholar, but as a level designer i would think you'd have more experience from practicality than any "game scholar" will ever get from theory.

Aren't you boycotting it because of rainbows and skilltrees and colors???

betas have become the de facto try before buy mechanism. i don't care much for what they've shown, but i want to see whether or not it works in practice.

i remember the giant robots in the first deus ex as the de facto "bosses". they were pretty deadly, but you could disable them in a number of ways. i really missed them in this game.

EDIT: actually he contradicts himself in the very end. "YOU gotta get into their flow". bitch, this is deus ex. i don't get into your flow, you let me pick which flow i want.

Mass Effect 2 on insanity was much more manageable with the DLC weapons. Though it did get stupidly easy by the end of the game with the Super Nuke 6000 missile launcher.

There is one thing about DXHR's bossfights I REALLY like: The shit they scatter around the arenas for supplies in case you went into the boss fight weak and pitiful don't despawn after the fight like they do in 99.9% of games with boss fights and items in boss fight arenas. You can focus on killing the boss and restock AFTER. That's great.

fair point, but they could have had that sort of fail safe and still make it possible for the boss fights to be done in different ways (e.g. stealth way).

it's an interesting interview and it bear some resemblance to what yahtzee has said before: basically, people do not really remember the middle of games. they remember the beginning and the end. if you're making a game that deteriorates over time, people are more likely to say it's a bad game despite it having a good start. and i do not doubt that the culture problem has had some major influence as well.

what sort of weirds me out is that grin seemed to have an immature or unprofessional way of handling business, and from what i read in this thread, it eventually bit them in the behind. one thing is having a casual atmosphere, but business partners are not exactly friends. they're there for the money, and if they see that what you're giving them isn't worth the money, they're not going to become happy, regardless of what you think of them. and a former CEO calling out decisions as "retarded" or games as "sucking" definitely does not help for credibility.

no offense to former grinners here, i can't imagine you have had influence on this level.
