Work goes on... does it ever stop?

    Hey,

sorry for the delay, but I really needed a break after finishing this rc1 version, so some of you

might already have seen it on other forums before this posting.

Well - 13 months, 900+ hours of work, many a hundred KM in my car later, a first release candidate

    of DoD_Nuernberg is available.

I basically started this map because I was impressed by the ancient feeling of Nurembergs pre war

old town, all the half timbered buildings up to 900 years old and the huge, fascinating churches.

Also, the layout and history promised a good background for a decent DoD:S map, so I gave it a try.

    And here it is...

    [Blocked Image: http://www.albatros44.de/nuernberg/nnf8k.jpg]

Weak points are some of the indoor areas, the sometimes a bit crisp 2d-/3d-skybox combination and some clipping issues.

All of these things will be addressed later, but for now I think it's a map that can be quite a lot of fun with few or many players.

    Opinions would be appreciated

    Cheers,

    Til / Albatros

    Hey again

Hm, I could increase the subdivisions, but I don't know if that'd make it look much better...

In fact, the wavyness is no exaggeration (like the others said).

This is already bad, and I, too, have seen worse...

    lol,

you're the only one who noticed it.

I've just released a balancing version, but I don't want it to spread to public servers yet, so

I only give it out one by one. It's been a year of work and in the past it has happened a lot that

servers used pre-beta versions of my maps (and use them until today), so people often are

scared off by only the name of a map and don't take a look at the "b1" or "b2" behind it...

Yes it is, and I'm going to take care of it ASAP.

The major problem isn't even the HDR though, it's the intensity of the brightness combined with the pitch and texture colour... resulting in a kind of overkill.

    I'll get that fixed tomorrow.

Today I've been working on Nuremberg again to get some feeling of a change...

Even more WIP since I had to rename/redo dozens of textures.

    Any opinions?

Very cool idea, PaulH. Gotta love the style .

Thanks for your tips everybody - lots of good, useful feedback.

I've been working on the lighting, darkened the HDR-catchers in the background somewhat, took some depth out of the

normal maps and tried to calm the surface detail down by using different textures in some places.

I will be tuning the normals down a bit more with the next compile.

About the palm trees and the summit... well, that's what I found curious about my hollidays because that's just what I saw there. 22 °, palm trees and snowy mountains . Though my interpretation may have been a bit extreme hehe.

    Hey guys,

this has been haunting me since the day I came back from my holidays (sunday), so I started it (monday) and I find myself making some progress on it.

Somehow, this one has the "right" feeling to it... not to mention the 28 custom textures I made right after my return.

Right now it's still missing tons of stuff (expectable for a 30-hour-old), e.g. a church in front of the mountain facing the sea, terraced gardens (on the left seen from the second picture) and the rest of the town. Right now it's just the port you can see.

Hm... release it for DoD? CS? Something completely different?

Some more old-fashioned DoD-Source stuff... still working on my "big release", and I guess I will be for another couple of weeks .

Working on a new version of my DoD_Nightingale map.

I've taken hundreds of digi pics (and been visiting cgtextures) to get some nice raw material for countless bump-mapped-seamless-textures which I'm going

to use to visually upgrade all of my maps older than 3 months.

    • March 3, 2008 at 8:42 AM

    Yes I do .

In fact I'm remaking all those maps listed on my website atm.

Consider the beta-versions of each map a kind of test run to see how very different gameplay modes

will work practically (e.g. shooting tanks with bazookas in nightingale or blowing up generators that supply certain parts of

the street illumination in a map like in dod_stuttgart).

P.S.: thanks hessi, very valuable stuff in that .zip you gave me. Correcting stuff right away.

    Hey everybody,

    thanks for the feedback .

    hessi:

Aye, there's a whole lot of work left to do, especially that fog you mention and the insides of the buildings.

Reason is that I didn't know what to expect from the balancing/gameplay so I was like "okay, if it won't work out I'll have to detail it all out again", so much of it really is sketchy .

I'd love to get those screenies if you find the time to take them. I bet there's a lot of unintended sketchyness here and there.

Just had a game of 12 vs 12 players and it really was a lot of fun, though I guess I'll try and experiment with different objectives at least for testing. Blowing up the tank isn't that hard to do, but getting to the flak with a well setup MG/sniper on the axis team has proven to be complicated.

Anyways cheers & nice sunday everybody

Most of the work consisted in making textures, overlays and optimization due to the pretty open setting.

Many DoD:S players keep complaining about long walking distances before seeing any action, so I limited the (detonation) objectives

to one for each side - a flak 38 and a sherman tank.

Both teams have spawns with at least 2 exits to prevent spawning-carnage from happening.

As soon as I get enough feedback on bugs, balancing and gameplay itself, I'll make it a release candidate and the 2nd map for my

    soon-to-come DoD:S map package.

    Cheers

I've been working a bit on the lighting - it's all being playtested occasionally, so it's still in the alpha-phase. There's a hell of a lot of work left to do on texturing, detailing and polishing and I'm aware of that hehe.

It's going to look like that ingame as soon as I move the "blueish" parts of the 3d ensemble closer to the bridge or make the fog a bit thinner. Both will do the trick, and I think it's okay to say that the parts that look ugly now due to the fog are of a better quality texturewise than the parts that look beautiful now .

I'm still experimenting, it's all a matter of tweaking... and *much* work.

    As I said, I've started this in april/may... ;/

Heya, thanks for the feedback .

    Thrik:

I'm using IrfanView to quickly rescale my screenshots from 1280 x 1024 to something smaller. It slightly blurs them automatically in that process, so I sharpen the pictures once. Not a perfect solution, I admit.

The original-size screenshots of each picture are linked with it, though, so you can see the untampered stuff aswell.

    @Seldoon:

Thanks for the paintover , the info_lightings are still missing (aswell as enough cubemaps). I've been retexturing that area so the texture flaws are gone aswell.

    PogoP:

I've started layouting with mostly standard content, but now I'm replacing more and more with my own stuff, some raw material comes from cgtextures, other from pictures I've taken in my vacations. Also, I use a lot of SpineRoyal's ressources. He made some of the finest texture packs for DoD I've ever seen.

    [Blocked Image: http://www.albatros44.de/reloaded/nnd1m.jpg]

You can compare this screenie to the first one. The texture on the building on the right used to be standard, the new one is made by myself.

    [Blocked Image: http://www.albatros44.de/reloaded/nnd2m.jpg]

    Any other suggestions?

Right now I'm experimenting with the skyline textures I made for the background.
