Water_lod_control only controls how far away the transition from expensive to cheap water happens (refraction and all that). The fog is set in the material I think.

Looks cool, but maybe add some more space to the shelves on top if they're for drinks?

(some way of telling the scale would be nice for future renders btw)

Is it possibly because the pieces of wood are on the same smoothing group? If they weren't I'd imagine the light would be far more defined on each side, that's what's doing it I think.

Looks really awesome. Only thing I would say is that the wood beams on the buildings don't have much definition on the edges - not sure if that's intentional or not. Just looks a bit strange to me.

    For Clarification, UE1 (Unreal) is UED1, UE1.5 (Unreal Tournament) is UED2, UE2 (UT2003/4) is UED3, UE3 (UT3) is UED4.

This is exactly the supposition that I think is very shortsighted. There is no line in the sand where everyone is off playing peggle and zuma on one side, and on the other side is everyone fragging each other in halo and tweaking their SLI setup to play crysis. Just because you do not play many "hardcore" games does not mean you only play popcap and flash games. There are so many games that cover a broad spectrum between the two. And there is a lot there that Indie games can target.

People who own a console typically go for the 'AAA' titles. Mostly because that's about 70% of the games available for them. My Brother got a 360 on Monday - and so far he's bought Bioshock, Halo 3, Assasins Creed and Call Of Duty 3. Obviously there are slightly more niche titles - I mean, White Gold's getting released on the 360 as well as Postal 3 - but most games sold are probably on the larger titles. Halo is definitely the Xbox's 'main' game.

Also, the way I took the 50% thing (although I only skimmed your post, sorry if I confused things here):

"The hardcore gamers that eat up the huge budget AAA console titles that pervade the game industry are actually a fraction"

"I would say that gamers are around 50% women if not a little less, so right off the bat most AAA big budget games are marketing towards only half of the total game playing populace. "

He obviously means gamers in the sense of non-casual. Not "Hardcore", just people who own consoles. Or that play those types of game on the PC.

Also, saying that 50% is a fraction of the market is slightly misleading.

Would you say that about all games/franchises that have great sales? If you worked at Bungie would you tell people "don't buy Halo 3 because our franchise has already been successful enough" ? Or is there something about Guitar Hero you just don't like? ...or don't like anymore?I don't mean to single you out, because a lot of us have had these thoughts about publishers "milking it." Would you feel the same way about a publisher milking what you've developed? What if you work at Infinity Ward? Would you complain about strong CoD4 sales?

I don't work in the industry. But if I did, yes I would - and I wouldn't work for a development studio that pushes out title after title of effectively the same game.

    You must get Firefox.

All the cool kids use it.

(In all seriousness I have no idea what could be causing this. I use IE myself and I've never experienced this)

The project is a SP game for default HL2, involving crazy weapons such as sheep launchers and chav guns (it's british thing - spray someone with some White Lightning cider, their clothes change to burberry and they instantly become an enemy to the other bad guys). It's set in the style of a gameshow in a city that has been walled off to house criminals after prison overcrowding became a problem in the near future.

    Sounds brilliant

As soon as I saw the screenshots I guessed it was British, so you're doing something right.

It would be better to have a publisher that doesn't have to fork out bullshit. I realize the irony in that comment but there are others who would have handled it better I think.

You seem to be blaming Eidos for the game's reviews. Saying IO should find a better publisher when it's the other way around. Eidos didn't cause the bad reviews, but they did try to save themselves to avoid the game selling worse than they think it should.

I'd be interested in what publisher you think would want to advertise their game on a site which criticised it, though.

Trying to save the game by publishing false acclaim on the website? yeah, way to go. Who's to say that if it had been a different publisher any of this would have happened.

Aah right, so it'd be better for IO to go to a publisher that instead lets their game damage their reputation. And under a different publisher, why would it be any different? The game would still get the same reviews.

All of this doesn't fill me with hope for Deus Ex 3. IO should really get a better publisher in my opinion. You know, one that doesn't have its head up its arse

Firstly, unless it was Eidos' direct responsibility that IO made a game that scored badly, asking them to get a better publisher won't do anything. Had they released under EA, it would still be reviwed as a moderate game (possibly). Had it been released under Activision, it would still be reviewed as a moderate game, and so on.

And secondly, why do they have their head up their arse if they're trying to save a game developed by IO? Rather than let it flop and, subsequently, leave a moderately reviewed and potentially a financial cock up on IO's record? And until there's any confirmation that the guy was fired due to this, jumping to that conclusion based on a single person saying "Yeah, it was totally to do with that!" is rather unfounded.
