Subsidies are one thing imho. Tax breaks another.

I hate the former slightly more then the latter. The Game Industry doesn't need this crap, which is why I go apeshit whenever the Canadian government sponsors some new Ubisoft-studio

The nightmare scenario is the film industry in Sweden. It's an inbred circus where everyone needs to go to the state film dept. and beg for funding to be able to make their next shitty film.

I actually bought this! Rockpapershotgun posted a link to a UK retailer selling it for 23 pounds.

I was very skeptical because I dislike the whole concept of key-selling. A very dodgy business.

But this is just a UK retailer that sell both physical and digital goods and the key is easily activated on Steam. It looked legit after some scrutiny so I went ahead and bought it from there. Got the activation key straight away and started the game download within minutes.

Just letting you guys know in case you're interested

The thing about Origin, I believe, is that you purchase through the webpage and the app is more of a download manager.

Correct me if I'm wrong though. I also had some difficulty finding the actual software...

I usually oppose the "run down what is essentially a 4-hour-long corridor and just shoot enemies we spawn in front of you"-type of single player, but if it really looks that good I'm willing to make an exception

Yes, he still left the door open for some narrative in games, but almost like a necessary evil

Still, it's always interesting with some strong opinions to mix things up. Like IdrA in SC2.

Game story telling on the whole is pretty weak lets face it.

No other medium shares this problem.

But yes, you are right. But the question is not about gaming's current quality, but the inherit potential that the medium has. You have to do like Levine and compare to early films.

    Quote from Jetsetlemming

Jaffe seemed to be dismissing the value of story for gameplay entirely, when it can be a powerful and effective tool for enhancing and augmenting the player experience. One example that sticks out to me right way is from Amnesia:

    Exactly.

Oh, and I never grew the balls to be able to play that game, but that sounds pretty disturbing!

I love what Todd Howard said about linear and open-ended games. "Give the players enough tools to make to their own fun, they can make their own pace." Don't need to have such a tight structure, etc.

Yep, I liked that line too.

I think Jaffe is being a bit too hard-line about his gameplay-first approach in this video. When making his arguments, he completely omits what makes video game storytelling special; interactivity! It allows for a lot of exciting opportunities when it comes to narrative design. Branching paths, emotional investment in gameplay, interactive dialogue, exploration/environmental storytelling etc.

But I agree with him on one thing, I don't play games to watch movies. Fuck off Kojima

You should invest in the explosive rounds upgrade and a revolver, it' sold by the merchant in detroit though I can't remember when he stocks it. Just keep all the revolver ammo you find and you're golden.

I know for a fact that he stocks explosive rounds

As I wrote earlier, I've finished the game and while I loved most of it, I was a bit disappointed by the story.

I've written some criticisms below. Did I just miss something? Do you guys agree/disagree?

    Quote

The story was promising at the start of the game, but as you got further the game started over-relying on twists that were triggered by Jensen speaking to some cornered villain with his batman voice. The antagonists always spilled the beans, detailing their evil plans like some cheesy Bond-villain. And sadly, few of the antagonists were interesting and generally they had very little depth. For example, it was a big WTF-moment when the 3rd boss opened up and said, roughly, "men like us never get the things we love". DUDE, I don't even know you and I just tore you a new one; this does not count as character development! It was an even bigger WTF-moment when that evil asian CEO bitch hooked herself up to that "quantum something something". She detailed her evil plans, jumped in and got raped. Uhm, what was that all about?

In general, I just felt that the plot lacked coherency; it was all over the place towards the end to be honest. It's a shame since there was so much potential there. The gameplay itself was a lot of fun, the environments were top-notch and some allied characters were interesting (like Malik and Sarif). Oh, and don't get me started on Hugh Darrow, that British fuck.

    Finished it now. 22 hours!

It was a good game, but fell just a little bit short of being a great game.

    Quote

It was primarily the narrative and the characters that weren't up to scratch imho.

I'll make a more elaborate post once I've let the game sink in completely
