  • Death Match game on Source looking for.. READ INSIDE :D

    • Rick_D
    • April 22, 2007 at 6:16 PM

Started this up with a friend of mine who is a coder by profession and hobby, we're going to make a simple DM game that utilises some fancy new ideas. Using as much of the existing animations, models, textures and art that we can to keep time consumption down we hope to have this completed fairly soon and not spend too much time on the smaller things that drag a lot of mods down.

We're looking for someone who will be willing to skin 3 character models and 3 hand models - doesn't need to be anything special, or amazing - I just don't have the patience (read: skill) to sit down and skin a whole character, let alone 3, as I have various other things on my plate and can't dedicate my time to modeling, and skinning everything, just want to break up the workload a little - to get these done faster and into game as soon as possible so we can move onto the next phase.

    Please get in contact:

    [email protected]

    irc: irc.gamesurge.net #game-artist.net or #animalshelter or #mapcore or /msg Rick_D

Or PM me on this forum

Note: totally serious about this, talented coder with the ability to get anything done and do it well, and myself who's been wanting to do an original DM game on Source for years. Now is the time, jump onboard and get yourself some action ;D

Heh I started a map for this competition yesterday....with only 9 days I don't think I'll get it done in time :] Still, I want to make it even if its too late to submit! At my current rate the map is looking to be 100% displacement maps, which I can say is a huge pain in the arse but it looks cool

    *edit*

    [Blocked Image: http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4593/rocktowerkm1.jpg]

This is a picture of the map so far...it's not really showing much; as you can see, it is still very much unfinished ^^ but the layout is in there, and I am gradually replacing all the measure walls with proper rock formations.

Basically, the map has 4 levels and all wind around a single rock tower. There is a hollow center, with 3 of the levels, and paths around the outside with some fast routes upward via ladder-slopes (you can see one on the left in the picture). There is a pool of water in the bottom level which you can drop down into from the very top.

No critisisms at this stage please, eg I know the rock props look weird and there is one obviously repeated on the right, and that the 2nd level ledge is unnaturally horizontal....like I said, this is a very early stage and I just wanted to show what it was I was working on : )

    Cool competition idea btw!

I need to render a scene and I have a TGA 32-bit bla bla all the usual stuff - I just want to know if there is any way to render said material to be 2-sided (viewable from both front and back) - or am I going to have to double up the polies there and flip the normals?

What is wrong with Steam? And why would some retard get so pissed off with it that he takes to hacking it to try and get them to change it - like they're even going to bother, honestly if he's russian this wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. At all. Hopefully he'll get cancer and die before he has a chance to post information only other retards will find use for.

Luckily my credit card is as empty as my wallet so good luck stealing from me ;D

Ok ladies and gentlemen; once you've finished your map completely and utterly upload it here:

    ftp://[email protected]

You have read and write access but you cannot overwrite previous versions of your map so _only_ upload it on or after the deadline and when you are completely happy with your bsp. If you somehow fuck this up then contact me and I will have to do it manually, but I'll curse the air you breathe if I have to do it.

The server is also up and running at the moment, it's been left open to all to generate a little publicity for the hosts and mapcore.net. However once we have all the maps uploaded we'll password the server and give the information in the "final entry" threads.

    IP: 195.242.239.13:27015

The name of the server is http://www.mapcore.net HL2DM Competition | Phoenix-servers.co.uk

Just to give you a run down on the settings the server is running:

    timelimit: 10 mins per map

    100 tickrate

    default everything else

If you have any requests/suggestions get in touch and we'll try and get it sorted out before the deadline. Don't come shouting about something on the actual day because it'll most likely be too late and I'll once again curse the air you breathe.

What day do you want to hold the test on?

I would like to suggest that we have a mapper only test and voting, and then get some general pubbers/non mappers to test it and get them to vote as well and do an average score so we get the full range of opinions. With 10 mins per map I think that is feasible.

    Suggestions?

I agree with you James, but it's a real catch22 - you can't just take away guns - I think we all can agree that that is not a reasonable or sensible option; but what can you do?

The first thing that jumps to mind would be stricter laws in place for letting people get hold of guns - nothing unreasonable and overly intrusive (like: submit blood, semen and urine and allow us to monitor you with this camera 24/7/365), but something that checks into family history and the requirement to go under psychological evaluation before being cleared; you're given a government grant to purchase a safe gun cabinet that possibly utilizes fingerprint ID - sure it adds on a lot of time to the purchasing of a weapon and there's a lot of psychos who can disguise their illness and fool others but you're bound to "catch" at least 50% or more of the people that currently slip right through, that'll be 50% more than now so anything is better than nothing.

I don't think it should swing the other way where you're required to give your life story and allow yourself to be electronically tagged just because you did something legal and through the proper channels.

There's a problem in this country (the UK) with social workers, these people fail thousands of people every year but no reforms are being put into place, just a shock horror news story now and then about how they failed, the heads of office diverting attention to something like "oh we couldn't have known, they did the best they were allowed to do" - now if it were up to me I'd look at the cases and see where the social workers failed, why they failed and the practical solutions to those problems, no matter how much money it;s going to cost because if it's going to improve people's lives then maybe they won't go out and kill all these people or abuse their children who then grow up to do fucked up shit like abuse children.

But instead what happens is there's some knee-jerk reactions and calls to ban kitchen knives.

The same is true in the states, but it's a little more dangerous there, with all the little pieces of lead flying around, but I still think the solution is not a simple matter of "banning" something, but looking objectively at the problems, and their potential solutions, instead of offering some simple quick-fix solution like banning video games or confiscating guns.

[edit] Oh and I found this funny but sad:

At Oregon's Lewis & Clark College, another student was detained by campus police Wednesday shortly before a vigil for the Virginia Tech victims when he was spotted wearing an ammunition belt. Portland police later determined that it was "a fashion accessory" made of spent ammunition, and said the man did not have a weapon. The belt was confiscated.

Glad to see there's no knee-jerk reactions taking place already.

just wanted to make a point that the people that go on these crazy killing sprees pick places where people are easy targets, if you knew that everywhere you went people would be armed you wouldn't have such an easy time getting past one victim.

I'm not saying that weapons should be widespread in any society - that's a dangerous thing, but if your sole reason to remove all legal weapons (which is what all these gun control people want) is the actions of someone like this then it's a flawed argument. Someone made a comment on another site that this person is going to be crazy with or without videogames, and I think the same applies to guns, they would have done something stupid like this if they didn't have guns, the death toll would just be lower.

But having laws in place that control how your weapons are stored etc will do much more for safety than just taking away legal weapons.

But to sum up, I didn't mean to suggest that students should be armed, just making a point that no guns doesn't always mean a safer place, it just means you are defenseless against a person who does have a gun.

this is a seriously funny comment from games&politics:

    # CFTF Says:

    April 17th, 2007 at 6:01 am

The first school shooting in American history was 1966. Predates videogames.

Apparently, the gunman was a Chinese national. As someone studying in China right now, the most overwhelmingly popular games are RTS/MMOs/crazy Chinese games… nary a FPS in sight. And they’re not exactly known for playing console games.

If he’d been running around campus with a sword yelling “FOR THE HORDE!” every time he cut someone down? You might have a case. Here? Not so much.
