Wow! Thats your prerogative. But how many movies and which ones have you seen him in? ...

i cant believe i am actually writing this for you and keep in mind i use a -5 +5 system so 5/10 is the middle ground where id be indifferent to choice between doing choirs and watching the movie:

    4/10 The Cable Guy

    5/10 Armageddon

    3/10 Breakfast of Champions

    2/10 The Haunting

    4/10 Meet the Parents

    1/10 Behind Enemy Lines

    1/10 I Spy

    3/10 Starsky & Hutch

ok he was in one thing i kind of liked:

7/10 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

and "heatvision and jack" that shit was awesome and it was only wilsons voice

I can certainly understand the concept of someone taking somebody else’s thing. Like, if I bought bacon with the intention of cooking it, chopping it up and throwing it into one of my famous omelettes, I’d be real pissed if some jerk showed up, took all my bacon and made their own breakfast with it. Even if that jerk was Warner Brothers, and even if their breakfast looked fucking awesome.

i found this thread because i searched the archives for the thread where we discussed the dynamic shadowing in cod4. i was thinking about opening a thread like " the 5 worst investments of my life" but since this sort of thread already exists i might as well write down the games that would have made my other list:

    5) the open world ubi games: prince of persia / assassins creed / far cry 2 although all these games sport fantastic tech an mind blowing artwork the gameplay is soo boring and repetitive that i quickly wished my money back far cry2 i didn't even complete and i usually beat everything i buy.

    4) everything on the wii except resident evil 4 and mario galaxy and okami (ok there is actually some good wii games ^^)

    3) "global operations" from "barking dog studios" i actually kind of liked the game it had everything that made cs great and more. only problem it had nobody online playing it D: ... there were like 5 severs with 6 people total playing it at peak times D: nothing stings worse than buying an unpopular multiplayer game.

    2) splinter cell chaos theory: starforce protection kept me from playing it and i bought it full price for the pc D: actually at some point after trying to launch it for like the 50th time in a FLUKE it launched and than i kept my pc with the game running for 3 days and nights because i didn't know if i could ever launch it again after i shut it down. i swore right than and there to never buy a drm pc game again unless the drm is steam.

    1) vortex for the snes ... most of you probably don't know this game ... and consider yourself lucky its one of those fx chip 3d games for the snes. i bought it out of the bargain bin when i was like i don't know 12 -14 for 49.99 deutsch mark which was the lowest snes games would ever get but with inflation and all its was pretty much a 50 euros full price game today. this thing is just a complete mess low frame rate horrible controls super hard difficulty i could never figure out how to beat teh end boss after the first stage this thing is just a complete nightmare. and it made a hugh dent into my young german student wallet that was like a year of savings right there down the gutter. luckily i also picked up "flashback" out of the same bargain bin for the same price and that game WAS FUCKING AWESOME !

    honorable mentioning:

-halo3/gears2: for the same reason the guys who make them are just way too rich already i paid danish full price for these which is like 70 euros so together 140 euros i could have bought like 10 world of goos with that and i should have ! (both games look and play pretty well though its just about fairness)

i think things are moving world of goo and cod4 two games i wanted to buy have just reduced their price by roughly 25% cod is now 37,49 and goo is 14,99 and in the shopping card price listing it doesn't look like its adding any tax the estimated subtotal is the same as the individual unit price. can anybody with an us account confirm that cod is still 49 .99 and goo 19.99 ?

would have loved to read it.

everybody is of course entitled to love everything they want to.

but if somebody is seriously going to say that deus ex is better than hl ss2 or fallout than you that person just made my "high on crack people" list

    Quote from HP

The sound the security cameras does when they instantly see you, "pipipipipi" Is NOT the alarm itself, It's more like a "What? Is that movement?" and if you stay in sight of the camera for more than 2 seconds when that sound is beeping, then the actual alarm goes on! I can't believe you actually beat the game not knowing this, lol.

i did know that but did the sound have to be so annoying ? no and did it have to remain active for another 30 seconds while it cant see you ? no because as you already put it its not an alarm yet. it think it would have been way more effective/logical/enjoyable if it made a loud lens auto focus sound. that would also tell the player that the camera only thought it detected motion but hadn't identified you just yet. the beeping sound tells the player that it definitely identified you as a thread which than again leads me to ask than why not trigger the alarm if it knows i am here and i am a hostile?

You cant be serious about all the technical nitpicking can you? It's a game from freaking 2000.

and halfe-life is from 98 and has none of those technical issues and correct me f i am wrong but unreal was already at that point considered much more technically sophisticated than quake 1 or "goldsource".

rotating doors push you aside or you can block them and stop their motion it will automatically load save games it will do auto saves between levels and before difficult sections the shooting makes impacts where ever a bullet goes. npc will move if you bump into them. hl had the full package despite the inferior engine which leads me to the inevitable conclusions: that ion-storm a) didn't care b) was plain not skilled enough.

    Quote from Steppenwolf

Why complain about the voice acting? Most games didn't even had that back then or very limited.

fallout from 1997 had great voice acting ! at least for all the main chars and none for everyone else. i would choose half-lifes text to speach over some of deus exs performances. good voice acting has nothing to do with age or technology.

    Quote from Steppenwolf

Or why do you compare features to Dead Space, a 2008 game?

because this kind of design philosophy has nothing to do with technology

    Quote from Steppenwolf

Gfx and sound were top notch back then and the sandboxy gameplay revolutionary.

i already thought it was ugly and sounded terrible back than but i DO agree on the revolutionary gameplay unfortunately back than i never got far enough to appreciate it !

    Quote from Steppenwolf

Not to mention that the whole fps/rpg hybrid thing was kinda new, except for the two System Shock titles by the same company and Hired Guns on Amiga. If you don't believe me check out some old reviews.

yes system shock 2 is another game like half-life that is older but much better

i am aware that most of you are very emotionally attached to this game and i am aware that i am full force punching into a hornets nest here. ... but ... i ... just have to say the truth ... i guess i am a masochist

probably nobody cares but i have completed deus ex now.

and yes i did like it better than the last 3 times i tried it but its no where near the master piece that people make it out to be.

    the good:

+lots of ways for players to express themselves there seams to always be at least 3 solutions to every problem/puzzle

+instead of some retarded mini game a toddler could solve( yes i am looking at you perfect dark) the hacking in this game is portrait as brute forcing kudos to you deus ex for that.

+some of the models/textures where done by someone who has some real taste i really digg the look of the: mini-crossbow bullpup stealth pistol and the medium sized walking mechs for example.

+upgrading weapons to the point where you can generously aim next to the enemy and still get a head shot is always good

    +cyberpunk is instant win

+loved all the secret-societys and how they try to manipulate you and the world

    +mostly well written

+one of the best "choice endings" in a game ever

+even though its not a open world game some moments like searching the french chateau or diving to the sunken ship before liberty island give you a great sense of exploration.

+cool locations in general i still think that manhattan skyline seen form liberty island is awesome.

    the bad:

-do to the many choices there is constantly t junctions where you have to choose a direction never knowing if you will back track on an alternate path or make progress. no idea how to solve this really ... but its definitely annoying and confusing as hell. i must have gotten lost about a million time.

-if i have learned a code or login cant you display it on the screen or better yet fill it in automatically when i access a computer or security panel ? do i really have to read all that stuff make the magical mental connection which computer terminal is meant and than still remember both login and password ? and like 20 per level. after i got the hacking skill up i hacked everything even if i knew the password.

-its nice that your teammates give you satellite images of the level you are in right now but could you please A) highlight where fuck i am on that map right now and B) give me a map for ->ALL<- levels D:

-i love the keypads in the game but why on earth is the key layout in game upside down from what i have on my keyboard ? are american keyboards different ?

-there was absolutely no need to include aliens mutants and ... reptile parrot chickens they just look retarded and added nothing to gameplay or story or atmosphere of the game.

-the ladder physics/controls feel horrible its as if you swim in a vertical cylinder of water you don't feel at all attached to the ladder and you constantly fall off

-horrible voice acting from pretty much everyone involved.

-no auto saves between levels ... oh how many times have i completed half of a level, died and than i was kicked back to the middle of the last mission D:

-out stayed its welcome. there is more filler levels than i could possibly shake a stick at. the paris catacombs the hong-kong heli hangar and the ocean lab for example where all absolutely unnecessary. and there were many more like it that where so unmemorable that i cant even remember them for this mini review!

-npcs sometimes even mission/story critical ones have a nasty habit of finishing they scripted sequence standing in the middle OF A FUCKING DOOR FRAME AND YOU CANT PUSH THEM OR WALK THROUGH THEM :comeback:

-rotating doors/objects slide right through the player and npcs sometimes making them get stuck ( not the player luckily) and sometimes they smash an object ... one that i might want to use to climb onto something if you know that this engine limitation exists and you cant fix it why don't you make all the doors in the game sliding doors ? ... its a fucking scifi game ion storm !!!

-most weapons feel like they completely useless especial the shotguns and assault rifles i know i didn't put any upgrades into them and also didn't put skill points into heavy weapons but i would at least like to see with the shotgun for example where all the individual impacts are when i shoot the way it is in the game i get the feeling that the shotgun is shooting blanks its completely effects and polish less.

-most of the texture work is painfully bad every once in a while there is an awesome looking texture that looks like somebody build the object in high poly 3d and rendered it with shadows and everything those textures look awesome why don't all of them look like that ? (those might have come form the hd package so maybe ion storms artist are only to blame to make shity textures to begin with)

-never try to disarm a lam while hanging on a ladder

-lock picking and manipulating electronics takes way too long especially towards the end of the game. i think its OK that they tell you this is a 90% secure door it takes 3 tools but i want to still unlock it instantly or with the time it takes to use up one tool.

-the helicopter bomb twist was hinted at so heavy handed i could smell it 3 levels away.

-lots of fire and lightning effects in the game that should have been additive where alpha masked .. .wtf even morpheus who seams at least at that time to be pretty important has that messed up black outline D:

-the gui gives me a bad windows 95 vibe especially the main menu. a really atmosphere killer. how about some good old fashion cyber punk additive green on black cant go wrong with the classics.

-once you get the light saber in hong-kong and thats 1/3 into the game there is no need to use any other weapon anymore.

-those spider bot that zap you and take your augmentation energy down OMFG annoying and you cant hit em properly with your sword either.

-the rocket launchers instant kill blast radius is like twice as large as the effect it makes ... i blew myself up on accident countless times.

-those fucking security cameras they spot you instantly even if you only peak around a corner for a split second and the sound they make is soooooooo annoying and they wont shut up even if you successfully hide for at least 30 seconds D: and why cant i just shoot them ?

-every one out of 3 times i boot up the game all the voices in the game are horribly distorted my ears are still bleeding. this might have something to do with all the graphics stuff i installed.

-when you die the game doesn't automatically return to the menu or the last save game how often i clicked away for minutes until i realized this is a game from the last millennium.

-default key bindings reload not on r wtf and crouch not on c and ctrl ... whats wrong with who ever came up with this ?

-whats the point of having a locker that takes 2tools and only has a candy bar and soda inside ? people are just gonna quick save before and after and see if they want to make that trade off. dead space recently handled this issue way better: you could use a power node to open a door to a storage room that would always hold a roughly equivalent value inside spread over a diverse number of objects there would always be ammo and health and all sorts of stuff that you might need right at that point.

    the ugly:

.there is lots of nekos in the game and every game can be made better with nekos ! ... what you disagree ? how dare you

.one of the passwords used in the game is the pin number too my savings account ... and thanks to deus ex millions of players now have that number in their heads :-|

.switching the game to opengl makes most of the 8 bit color ramps disappear the detail textures combine properly with the regular textures the sky doesn't look like a complete mess and the distance precision z-fighting is resolved as well its an instant fix button why didn't the game default to the open gl driver ? the dx default version just makes everything look broken.

.catchy theme song although unfitting to the game definitely banana phone material.

.most of the female character textures are kinda skanky

    bottom line:

if half life and fallout had a cyberpunk baby than deus-ex would be the cheap knockoff from that game. i elevated my rating from 4/10 to 6/10

off to a good start i guess

    crtis:

-spend more time with lighting rather than structure !

-from this camera angel and assuming the water is perfectly level (water usually is) id expect the horizon line to be way further in the back (higher in screenspace)

-tell a bit more of a story with this picture or show us something we havent seen before if this is supposed to be concept art why don't i just find a photograph from the hoover dam on goggle image search and use that instead ? think about that

i think you are heading in a good direction ! keep on rocking
