Cool thread btw, I have my own never ending game too, some of you guys already saw it, it's in standby for the moment, and ... NOT DEFINED YET

Right click to set a movement order for a character, backspace to erase it, and B to launch the movements. I know this sucks but that's how it is

It's easy in the case of kids because you have parents to throw the responsibility upon (like always), but in the case of large audience f2p facebook games like farmville, happy aquarium or any of the like, there is also a good part of psychologically fragile adults (and it's easier to make them take out their wallet).

I'm not sure if this is true or not, nor i remember from where i heard it. But apparently the companies distributing these games live from 0,2% of their player base, people who are basically ready to pay 5000, 10000 $ for content or ingame money. Are they rich responsible persons who dispose of their money as they like, or are they psychologically fragile persons like your senile grandma throwing away her economies in a delirium ? Not sure these companies have the means to know, and probably no desire to know anyway.

There's one thing that didn't came out too often in this conversation though, at least for the job of an environment artist that is, the one i know. Is that the job requires more than often a lot of psychological endurance, because it can turn very repetitive when you are working within a company (even a great one).

That's pretty much depending of where you work at, what is the project or how the work is managed between the env guys (if the dirty work is not dispatched equally between the team and it ends up being on you). But sometimes when things need to be done to hit release, they have to be done.

For example i remember in Paris during the development of a crappy horse game doing the worst monkey job (nothing against monkeys) spending 8 months filling by hand kilometers of grass, trees and the like with broken tools and have to deal with the worst management ever (i mean i liked my job as a porter at the airport more). I saw all of my co-workers full of enthusiasm slowly breaking up, spending their day moaning a bit more and trying to leave the boat to more interesting teams within the studio or desperately working on making unique assets, turned up I ended alone to finish placing vegetation in my shiny armour (until the intern arrived). And that's the thing, they were right, because this inevitable dose of repetitive work is the real mind killer.

I mean if everyone was working at a company like they do at home, nobody will be moaning and everything would be - c r e a t i v e - including unicorns, sparkling stars, and butterflies.

And if you are unlucky and that's falling on you, that's where you need a good balanced personal life first (and cool coworkers), something to drive you like a passionate feeling about what you do or a self accomplishment feeling (like doing stuff at home) or a very hard psychological resilience, or move to somewhere else; otherwise you will have the feeling to live the same boring day again and again, you will burn out super fast and you will be totally disgusted by what you liked.

I mean people can shit on IOS, small games etc, but sometimes i can be much more interesting than AAA games, especially if you are managing all the art direction since there's no one else to do it, and you can learn much more for yourself doing this than making repetitive content for an AAA.

    Can confirm.

Well that's quite harsh from my part really, i mean it wasn't void of any human interactions (and there was some french guys there to talk to and other people when i was having a smoke), but the atmosphere at CA definitely made me socially awkward. I don't know if it was the fact that i was a foreigner or if there is a tacit agreement within the workings of the company; actually it's still is a big mystery for me.

Well personally i start to be a bit used up aswell, not by the work i still love, but by my situation. I have been in 3 companies for the last 5 years. One which closed after my 6 months contract, another ran by gangster bosses in Paris which closed after 2 years (lots of adventures) and Creative Assembly in England which was more solid but which i left after 1 year.

And well when i began working i didn't mind moving, but nowadays i start feeling the effects : for one I have my girlfriend who doesn't like relocating so often or having an ocean separating her from her family, and on the other side my parents who are getting older and all the consecutive health problems ( 77 - 75 years old respectively ) and since i'm their only child i feel i cannot move as far away as the other side of the world. So there's that which have been a great burden for me when i was in England for a year to try out the foreign worker experience. Especially since CA is located in a small isolated town, and although I may lived the worst that can happen to you in Paris work wise (everything we made thrown to the trash, and the studio quickly degenerated into an extreme version of the raft of the medusa) i have met some awesome friends and paradoxically had a really great time getting my work done in this agitated challenging environment. At CA things were running smoothly (more or so), i loved the franchise i was working on (big total war fanboy) but god the atmosphere was depressing, I have no idea what was going on in this studio, everyone was super nice but somehow found human interaction awkward, they just started their day sitting on their chair with a timid "morning" (and so i did), went for the microwave for lunch and left work without a word. God the cold shower i took on my first days when i was used to see clashes between people out loud in the open space.

So maybe i'm unlucky, maybe i'm looking for it. I still love doing environment art but like 3dnj said, you have to find your balance. And today it's not really the case for me and i'm getting a bit used up :/, i'm considering starting studies again to do something else, but really that would break my heart.

wow that's awesome minos ! Such great progress, this will looks amazing once well finished ! The only thing i can nitpick is the pine tree looking a bit out of context ( it looks more fit for a forest than on a street ) however the fluffy ones are really great ! Please more fluffyness i think it works great with all the straight architectural lines

Watched Michael-Kohlhaas, I liked it a lot. If you are not the contemplative type you may be in for a big boring disappointment : Not the most cheerful movie, the rhythm is slow, the realisation abrupt and frustrating, it is basically an understatement; but it does what hollywood doesn't do. So in case you want to watch something different.

Oohh that sounds complicated blackdog, i don't like complication, sorry about that. But like frie said, you don't know if she wants him to get jealous, or if he is acting on his own, what is sure is that you don't have to feel guilty at all. Reminds me of the ethernal husband of dostoïevski for some reason, read it, it's not too big .

Also if he is in the US for one year, and you are sure he is not the kind of guy taking a plane to come gunning you down, well you have one year easy !

And that is how Europe will be forced into globalization with the US against the rest of the world and especially the asiatic block, honestly guys, just take a look at what the Transaltantic trade and investment partnership is (NAFTA but for two differently regulated markets). I swear it prooves how serious the situation is. I think we live a very important historic moment.

Here we go guys it's on, i heard it just today on radio :

    http://europolitics.info/energy/french-…rican-shale-gas

EDF the first electricity producer in France - with most actives owned by the state which gives you the color - has signed a deal with the US on shale gas imports. Which makes it the first importer of US shale gas. Pretty proud of my country diligency....

Honestly europe is taken by the b.... on the energy question. It's either continue the deal with Russia which won't happen, or turn to the US for their energy imports in exchange of the TTIP. And if brussel ratify the TTIP, this may sounds a "bit" exagerated, but this is the end of europe.

If you wonder what the TTIP is, all europeans need to watch this, i shit you not, it concerns you a LOT

As a guy said in the comments of the video, and unfortunately would feel pretty hipster about it :

Also what is negotiated as the most important treaty of 2014 at the UE :

    http://ec.europa.eu/trade/policy/in-focus/ttip/about-ttip/

    http://www.euractiv.com/sections/energ…ddiction-303374

    http://fr.scribd.com/doc/233022558/EU-Energy-Non-paper

The passage i like the most in the third link :

    Quote

The EU and the US have been at the forefront of challenging export restrictions for the last decade, as illustrated by their successful common effort to lift China's export restrictions on raw materials including rare earths. Combatting resource nationalism, together vis-à-vis third countries

Honestely i would rather the EU to not sign such free trade treaty with the US, that is the most terrible thing europe can do for its population, and i feel it will be our biggest problem in europe for the years to come. Monsanto stuff, unfair concurence with the american corporations, rebuying, privatization, you name it... We are going to get absolutely wrecked. We already have our fair share of free trade and economic laws from Brussel in the EU between members, and i don't see the magical hand of liberalism regulating anything since the begining of the union, quite the opposite - so if you add the world n°1 expert in the game - that's like ... madness.
