RAM is so cheap just now that for what little it will set you back, you might as well upgrade to 1gb. Any more is overkill for gaming and I doubt you'd notice any sort of performance increase going beyond it.

If you don't have a 4 year degree and in the proper age class you won't get a visa.

Wow, I'm glad I decided to stay on for my honours year then Are they quite picky about it being a 4 year degree? I know that many courses in England are 3 years for an honours degree, while here in Scotland its standard to do 4 for honours. I wonder if that would make a difference?

I think most of the time its more hassle than its worth really. I emailed companies like Digital Extremes, Epic, Gearbox and what have you years ago asking a few questions about employment opporunities (asking for advice on a career path as opposed to looking for a job), and all of the replies said what I had planned sounded good, but to look in the UK as its very rare they hire from elsewhere. Possible, but rare.

Yeah it took me a while before I was willing to visit that website too Very glad I did though - loved the 3dsmax video tutorials (or at least the ones I watched so far), and once I actually get a working version of the program I'm sure they will come in handy.

Well I setup LiteStep for a single monitor (I can live with just the one for the time being) and grabbed the "non | step" theme for it. Its absolutely gorgeous - don't think I could go back to the fugly winxp theme now

    Resized from 1600x1200 to 800x600:

Only real problem is I've no idea how to get my desktop icons back I think LiteStep is one of those things you need to spend a bit of time learning how to tweak!

I must admit I've gotten pretty used to having it that way. My main monitor I use for my desktop, any development stuff, and most browsing. I sit winamp on the left monitor on the right edge, and have IRC on its left edge, and its really handy for having up reference stuff/tutorials, or for having up multiple pieces of code up at once. It does feel more natural looking over to the left at these sorts of things as opposed to looking right, but it might just be due to force of habit.

Argh, litestep seems cool, but it doesn't seem to like the idea of working on a dual monitor system where the primary monitor is on the right (only way I can really have it setup due to my desk). Oh well, I'm away home for the summer in a couple of days, so I should be able to set it up with the primary monitor on the left then Thanks for the heads up, I'd never heard about alternative shells like litestep before.

I'm fairly sure they have only said they are interested in the idea and have had talks with numerous parties about making it, but nobody has so far come up with a decent script and until somebody does, its not going to happen.

Not necessarily - one of the great things about triangle terran is that, in general, each triangle is going to be one w_poly. That means you can normally have pretty solid control over the polycount, simply by increasing or decreasing the number of triangles you use. It IS a vis compile time killer as it splits up your map into thousands of leafs, so its advisable to either use hint brushes to enclose your terrain areas, or make your terrain func_wall's and seal it all up by using simple world brushes underneath / behind.

Thats a kinda outdated tutorial, but it does work out fairly nicely for how simple a technique it is. You might wanna try following through my triangle terrain series if you want to get a bit more in depth with your rockwork...

Saw this during E3, and indeed it is looking spiffy. Been following this one's progress since it was first announced....in case you couldn't guess, I'm quite a fan of FFVII Go go go turks! Glad they have at long last given a release date, as I'm getting a little tired of waiting. No mention of UK release yet though, might need to import from the US.

Fritz, are you sure you need to create a new mod to have custom shaders? It seems that they are compiled into a DLL that must have a standard prefix - couldn't this DLL then be distributed and the shaders included in it be referenced in any custom materials?

Could be really useful once its a bit further developed. I suck with displacement surfaces, which is really annoying since I was confident with triangle terrain

That fountain is crying out to be replaced by a model - its so blocky and simplistically textured that I feel it detracts from the scene. You should give some of those buildings a bit more detail too - even something as simple as adding chimney's would let you make more interesting roof lines to the outside areas, and gives the potential to give a little life to the scene with some smoke in places.
